As crooked as these bankers have been, are these home owners living in the house w/o paying mortgage that much better? I'm afraid instead of bankers gaming the system it's now that the dead-beat homeowners doing it in their place. At the end of the day tax payers are getting screwed (again) as their money will be spent to cover whatever mess left behind.

no one is trying to give "dead-beat homeowners" a free house or a free ride. the problem with the mortgages is fraud on the homeowners AND the investors to which the mortgage securities were issued. the homeowners still owe, but the payee may be someone else. the additional problems are related to taxation since without the proper paperwork the mortgage servicers are effectively liable for tax evasion. we all know how the IRS feels about that.

Good. We can stay in our huge home now--for free. The next problem will be servicing the home with Heat, Natural Gas, transportation to and fro--because commodity prices will continue to increase as currencies get devalued. The bigger and further away the home is from services, the higher the cost will be.
