Most of the people who do FGM do not see it as anything wrong. Similarly, most people in the US see nothing wrong with male circumcision (this is changing and it might not be "most" people anymore). Genital mutilation interferes with sexual pleasure. It is done mostly for ancient cultural and religious reasons. There is no medically justified reason for routine circumcision, male or female.

Please educate yourself on the issue before making such blatantly false statements. The inner foreskin is actually far more sensitive in intact men than the glans penis, and half of it is forever removed in male circumcision.
@101084laura circumcision IS removal of parts of the penis. and every part of the penis is important. almost all sensation i have is in my mucosal tissue left right below my glans. i have about two square millimeters of a frenulum left, and i can tell you that its pretty sensitive too. i can only imagine having 70% more mucosa, and a full frenulum, also not having a chapped, dried out glans would be better.

During the wedding night the man cuts open the stitching, which can often lead to infections. Also the stitching up makes urinating and menstruation very difficult in most cases.

The real reason it goes on in this country is due to religion, Islam and Judaism recommend circumcision for religious purposes (in which I don't personally agree with) with is also optional, however whichever someone is circumcised or not here does not get them thrown out of their community.
In that country, if a girl is not circumcised, and by circumcision I mean cutting ALL of it off, she gets shamed and will never be allowed to get married. It carries risks later on in life where many women have bled to death from giving birth with those parts removed.
So the reason why it is emphasized is not due to feminism, but because of that. I wish people would stop using feminism as a scapegoat for everything and do some research.
If male circumscription was banned or exposed in this country, you would get religious protesters, not feminist protesters. Most of the people who do FGM do not see it as anything wrong. Similarly, most people in the US see nothing wrong with male circumcision (this is changing and it might not be "most" people anymore). Genital mutilation interferes with sexual pleasure. It is done mostly for ancient cultural and religious reasons. There is no medically justified reason for routine circumcision, male or female.

During the wedding night the man cuts open the stitching, which can often lead to infections. Also the stitching up makes urinating and menstruation very difficult in most cases.

In that country, if a girl is not circumcised, and by circumcision I mean cutting ALL of it off, she gets shamed and will never be allowed to get married. It carries risks later on in life where many women have bled to death from giving birth with those parts removed.

@rends There are feminists of all backgrounds and in various countries. When the movement first started it was geared towards the white, middle class but I think in the present people recognize feminism as the ideas and advocacy. There is no denying the history but feminism today is women (and men) of all backgrounds fighting for women. If you erase the name feminism you would still have women advocating for women just under a different name.

@stefanogissidiaz slavery was inculcated long before these religions existed, around 1760 bc. Slaves had no rights, they were bought/sold and beaten. Do you deny this?
Christianity + Islam provided guidelines as to how we should "treat" slaves [with kindness and justice]. As far as I know, they "forbade" any such cruelty. In Islam, Muslims would buy the slaves off the people and set them free. I swear I'm not here to argue. I just wish people and religions would respect each other. Thank you.

@NorthCitySider Christianity endorses paid servants. The word 'slave' is used often in older translations of the bible, but in newer translations, the word 'servant' is used. The bible endorses the purchase of human being for the purpose of servitude in exchange for shelter, food, clothing, and other basic needs. It does not endorse the mistreating of any human beings, which is what most people associate with 'slavery'.

When people extrapolate and decide that similair rituals should be conducted on women, people begin to yell that it is a violation of human rights. Circumcision, or "genital mutilation" as the ignorant call it, is done to reduce sexual pleasure, which removes a big temptation of human life, and helps the person stay on God's path, ultimately benefiting them.

Of course some women are bitter and glad when it happens the other way round- you can't compare the two mindsets as one group has put up with this abuse on a much grander scale. In a situation where, for example, the penis of a rapist was cut off I would laugh along too and clap probably.
