What about Ctrl+Click?

Feather is set to 0 px. When I hold down Control key and click to the layer I get this warning..

Very useful. Unfortunately I have the same problem using Magic Wand Tool, which does not have feather setting ( photoshop 7). Any idea what to do? The advice to uncheck 'Use video alpha' on Preference> Transparency& Gamut did not help. Thanks.

Thank you so much! This just started happening and I couldn't figure out what happened. Like Gnarly, I changed the feathering and didn't realize that is what caused the problem. Amazing how the answer was found on Youtube and not Adobe website!
