  • The fast forwarding feature is really impressive. But the interface looks crummy. I like having thumbnails for all my movies.

  • Duh says mkv bluray rips are in mkv

  • Does ist play blu-ray from ext. HDD ?

  • How many gigs do they have? no one states that... i think thats the most important thing

  • does anyone know if it can play Hi10P encoded files?

  • I have one of these and what I did is you can plug a USB Wifi adapter (i used a linksys usb wifi plug) into the WD TV and gives it wireless network support. Then you can stream your movies over your network from a shared folder on your pc's hard drive. Or stream from youtube/Pandora music service/etc.

There are also custom firmwares you can use similar to jailbreaking that adds 3rd party stuff like streaming shoutcast, streaming from other sites other than youtube. Support for flickr, etc.

  • love this device!

  • Can you record the ps3 with this ?

  • i wonder how it compares to a laptop connected to an hdtv through hdmi. should i get this or just use my laptop?

  • can it record ??

  • Is this a plug and play type or do you have to open it up to add HDD to it ?

  • I'm looking into one of these because my PS3 only uses FAT32, only 4gig can be moved to the external hard drive I have to use mkc to vob and break it up into 4 gig parts. The PS3 also doesn't play mkv unless from a media server.

Does it hook up to none fat32 devices?

  • How you transfer a movie to this device from your computer?

You not talk about capacity of this HD media player.

  • @CaptainScarlet2006

You hook an external hard drive up to the WD media player. I believe via USB only, maybe firewire?

  • 1080p for breakfast

  • One thing i want to know can it get rid of thos boarders?

nothing i hate more then boarders...good media players should have it

so it fits full picture to screen?does it have this Liminju?

  • If only it added the HDD to it for the same price..

  • Can anyone tell me what i should choose between the WD TV Live HD Media Player and the A.C. Ryan Playon!HD Mini? And why? Because i really dont know the difference.

    thx

  • P-S-Tree lol +1 for accent

  • it doesnt even have a tuner??

  • Can this do 24-bit audio? I bought a Logitech Squeezebox, which costs three times as much as the WD TV for digital audio playback and it can't do 24-bit audio (not even regular mp3 playback without major problems with the built in server.)

  • the 1080p mov files created by my cam wont play audio prop. help anyone?

  • Does it play in REAL HD quiality?? Thank you!

  • WD TV cant play ( Audio Channel 1 or 2) movie will sputter. combine Audio Channel to HD movie. combine them as one. convert the Audio Channel to the movie = 1 file. if you try to Play MKV, Mp4. H264, each movie folder has a Audio channel folder. at this this Western Digital HD player & live wont play the Audio Channel. Audio Channel dose not sputter the movie dose, so if there was a way to get the movie to play its Audio channel there would be great sound & no sputtering. help ?

  • @camboy1132 i have the same problem it only says audio 1 (digital) i dont have a 5.1! The file has no sound! if u find help please tell me!

  • @camboy1132 i have the same problem it only says audio 1 (digital) i dont have a 5.1! The file has no sound! if u find help please tell me!

  • @miovader Your TV won't play DTS sound, I had the same problem. To fix this, I bought a Logitech Z5500 speaker system and connected it to the WD TV HD with an optical cable.

A cheaper solution is to convert your movie from DTS sound to AC3 sound, this way it will play through your TV speakers.

Anyway, a 5.1 surround system is really nice when watching a movie.

  • @Xpl0dA thanks you so much! I'll try it out!!! :)))

  • 1 (800) 275-4932 if your having probelms call and complain with your codec play back issues. WD need to Change the Codec pack to differnt one like Klite Codec pack computer version and put it on WD tv live

  • I got lots of Movie Play Back issues ,movies will not play correctly with errors. HD movies wont play smoothly & spuders. as we can clearly see its codec issue.what we need to do is to change alter the codec pack.some how alter the Computer version and make it compatible with the play firmware. Community Codec pack or Klite codec pack as we can see the computer dose not have no issues when playing form pc with these codec packs.WD TV also live needs to use different firmware codec on player .

  • hey whats a good hd tv that gets 720 p hd that is less than 300$ and can last 2 years or more

  • i can play .mkv files but no sound... what i do?? thanks

  • @mrmarciocruz click "option" and a menu comes up. You should be able to change the audio channel. If not, then its an issue with your file.

  • Hi does it play mkv h.264 aac audio, avchd folders and m2ts but mostly van you plaese tell me if it plays mkv in that format .thanks!!

  • can you play itunes shows on it

  • @geebones will not play itunes purchases

  • Ve vant ze mmoney Lebowski! Ya, oont ve cut off your johnson!

  • can i play mp4 on this?

  • @Ezero0065 yes, as long as its not copywritten (itunes purchases)

  • Does this play m2ts files with subtitles? keyword: SUBTITLE

  • try (Play On) you run PlayOn Software on your computer and the wd tv live can detect it throught a Network and you can watch Hulu netflix. and there some other free channels but I think 2 weeks are free. its cool. free tv. I tryed it because some one in a youtube told me about it. its Called ( PLAYON)

  • I have format play back issues with all video formats. I took wd tv hd 2 generation back a got the wdtv hd Live and its got the same play back issues. Hd formats are failing to play properly

  • when I play ( H264 & X264 ) Audio sync are not even with the video. the person talks but the sound comes out 3 seconds later. it played fine earlier but its doing it now and its doing it on all my (H264 & x264) another issue is wmv9 it supports but wont support wmv earlier codec . the Firmware Release 1.01.77 (12/3/09). a home made tweak might be needed to fix these issues

  • nope, it is a PLAYER, it uses its own ports, so no...

  • I just got my today and played very good on MKV but some movies no Audio why?

Please let me know why some movies (MKV) no audio.anyone KNOW?.

  • it suports WMV9 but dose not support older plain WMV & I hope in the feature they will ad some codec to the device

  • its support DVD + DL ???

  • Can you crop and change the aspect ratio of a video with this device?

  • tvix m-6500a ftw

  • I converted from xvid to MP4 High Definition & it would not play,it took me 3 half hours ? help has any body had this issue. What is the best HD Format I should convert to & what resolution???????,, its great player by the way. one down turn I don't like about is that fact I have to unplug it a lot just to plug it into my computer & its hassle. I got to unplug the Hard drive so I can bring it over to PC to load movies to it, but its a hassle. it should be wireless movie sending to Hard drive

  • Can I update the firmware from WD TV HD Live Media player? or does this one use a diferent chip or something? Because this DTS issue is annoying

  • This Device sucks, it can even decode DTS when when it is pass through-ed an Optical out :(

I own a Yamaha which is capable of decoding DTS HD but unfortunately WD HD didn do the tric, the audio just goes Blank, its capable of only decoding only Dolby digital & AC3 !

    Epic Fail !

  • @whywhyman I don't see why everyone is banging on about DTS when Dolby digital is mandated for blu ray and DVD so you don't need DTS, I call BS on anyone who says they can hear the difference anyway and even if you could u need to stop being such an audio freak and start watching the movie.

  • dayumm....that's deep man...wow...just for this I'm gonna add you.. Like your comments man

  • @jwsmite For lossless audio, almost all blurays use dts master audio so thats why people care

  • If you have either a DTS amp or a TV with a DTS decoder & an optical in , If your looking for the media player act as a AMP/DECODER its not going to. If you are doing it right make sure the audio output is switched to digital in the media player menu.

  • I just convert the DTS to AC3 and there is no loss in quality whatsoever and its still 6 channels. This is a great device btw. The picture quality is AMAZING. I just wish the remote was a little bit more responsive

  • @Aragiss can you tell me how do you do that? and how long did it take you to convert a 4.5gb file. Thanks

  • @fede018 There's a software to do that but I don't remember the exact name. Just google "dts ac3 convert'

It takes about an hour for 1080p mkv files to be converted. But those files are 8-10 gb.

The bad thing is, the sound occasionally gets muted while youre watching the video and you need to pause and resume to solve it. This only happens in a third of all videos I convert

  • I know HD Media Player is very hot, but which country has gained popularity? UK or America or Asia??

  • Thanks for the review I really want one of these - they seem to be out of stock everywhere on UK

The thing what does it for me is MKV support. I find it appaling that the xbox and ps3 are incapable of handling mkv "out of the box"

Can anybody confirm I MKV playback is as good as it sounds. It just sounds to good for the money tbh

Also anyone any look buying in the UK?

  • @edward92robertson

The only problem with MKV playback is the audio, DTS audio does not work, which is the standard audio format for blu-ray movies.

A simple conversion of audio, and the WD TV is perfect. (I recommend Popcorn Audio Converter.)

Also, ensure that you download the WD firmware update from the western digital website, when you get it.

I've had the device for a month now, and MKV playback is perfect.

  • I think I found a way to watch anime. :D

  • Umm is there anything with a better interface and sorts my files by media tags instead of folders??

  • do u know if u can record xbox/ps3 games with this??

  • yes it does. It really is one of the best devices anybody can have. It's great, I love mine.

  • im sorry guys i dont know much about all this stuff does it play files staright from a dvd like the ifo and all that suff. If i put the dvd onto my hardrive its like in ifo and other formats does this work directly on to the player

  • @ExTrEmEAsSaUlTSqUaD

The files on the USB hard drive may be played by the WD TV HD Media Player if it is one of the following formats:

    AVI (Xvid, AVC, MPEG1/2/4), MPG/MPEG, VOB, MKV (h.264, x.264, AVC, MPEG1/2/4, VC-1), TS/TP/M2T (MPEG1/2/4, AVC, VC-1), MP4/MOV (MPEG4, h.264), M2TS, WMV9

I assume this media player supports ifo, considering the player supports DVD formats like MPEG2 and VOB.

Forgive me if I am wrong.

  • does this works on a pc monitor with hdmi input ?

  • Hi. Ive gt a 500gb Seagate ex-hard drive. its sed that any ex-hdd work....my ex-h also has a plug port (adapter)...will this work the same an a ex-h with just a usb port

  • I should be getting mine in a few days :)

  • This is a screamin' Deal! It plays my MKV and MPeg videos. The interface is OK, nothing to write about. For the price it's earned a place on my SONY WEGAS (I won't buy a digital until this fine unit dies, whcih in my experience with SONY, is a long time) I have two of these units, swap out 4 GB jump drives - great entertainment addition.

  • bought it...love it!! sucks it doesnt support dts which u didnt mention...but hey i use xilisoft and mkvmerge and it plays it on my tv then!!

  • Yes, it plays DivX / Xvid !

  • mkv is not a codec. it is merely a container

  • great vid...

I've been surfing a lot, and this is one gorgeous piece of technology man, woooooow !!!

    Congrats !!! Beautiful...

What I need though is an HDMI player that has:

    * full HD 1080p

    * reads mvk

    * 1 TB capacity

    * AND records

    * good brand at least 3 year warranty

Anybody could help me out ? thanks

  • 99$,i thought it was 129$

  • Can I use this on a standard resolution TV?

  • Yes.

  • you can not down load movies from itunes and then play them threw this defices it does not convert m4v

  • @cpride74 yea we download like everyone else bro

  • I just bought one and I must say this small black box is just freekin great, it plays almost anyway i plugged on it, it great :D

  • Entropy56 - The video content is what you provide. This device merely lets you play the video on a high definition TV. It removes the hassle of building a HTPC or converting a file to be able to stream through a PS3 or Xbox 360.

Essentially, if you have a lot of content on an external hard drive, this would be perfect for you if you wanted to watch the content on an HDTV.

  • This is what you want folks.. MKV... thats all I will say.. HD IS NOW!

  • @atom069 MKV really rules!

  • FlybyFlicks has lots of higher resolution downloadable videos that play great with the WD Media Player. Create your own airshow by sequencing the clips. Entertain your friends and family with your personal programming on the big screen tv.

  • this media player support 120hz smooth motion?

  • On your video description you say "For $99" yet on the video the box clearly states the price at "$129". I'm confused.

  • its 99 on amazon

  • pretty neat

  • thanks dude im getting one tomorrow thanks to your clip!

  • when you rip the DVD to .iso you can maybe do a clone to include everything from the original disc to avoid the media player to jump straight to the main movie, it works for me at least

  • i saw this at frys for 100

  • Comment removed

  • Nice review. Tks! I was looking at this and you have made me decide.

    Tks again!

  • whys this take so long to attach usb device

  • Thanks for the info on ISO. Can anyone confirm if the new firmware update 1.02.07 out in april fixes the problem where .mkv files in 1080p play the sound correctly now? Was a bug, and release notes just indicate "fixed bugs from user community" not clear. I really want to buy this and want to get full info. Also one review states it locks up and needs reset when just sitting there a lot - fixed in 1.02.07??

  • I want to buy one of these but have a simple question even WD tech support could not answer: Does this play "the whole DVD" if it finds a ripped DVD folder (folder has IFO, BUP, VOB files in pieces)? Some players let you click on a VOB file and will play it, but will NOT let you click on an IFO and it will show you the whole DVD and let you menu through it with the remote. This one question is key to me being able to buy it? Do you know?

  • as far as I know: if you rip a DVD and safe it as an .iso file, the media player will open it just like a regular DVD drive would and you can use all functions like scene selection, subtitles, etc.

  • not true. i've ripped all of my dvds to .iso files and it jumps right into the main movie. not sure how it handles .iso files with multiple main movies (picks largest one maybe??). so, now all i do is just the main movie because even if they do add support, i don't want the menu and all that, just want the movie.

maybe they'll do a firmware update or offer it on the wd tv2 (aka: wd tv live), which should be out in October this year last i heard.

  • I got it aswell but I can't use the HDMI port... Whenever I try to use HDMI I get no screen/sound. Is this normal ???

  • I've been using HDMI from day one. You might go to Settings, Audio/Video and insure that the Video Output is set to HDMI.

  • I got it working now ;)

I returned it to the store and got another one and now it's working fine! It's really great :D

  • can u access files from pc with this device?

  • Man, nice choice, awesome media player, im looking forward to buy one and after watching this video i think i already chose the right one :) 5/5

  • Cover art, yes. Name your JPG cover art file the same as the video file (exactly) and have it in the same folder. It will display. You must have firmware version 1.02.6 + I believe.

  • can u give video cover art

  • as long as it plays MKV. (HD) is perfect...

  • agreed. with what player do you use for mkv ? i tried using windows media but no sound. with divx player it says i need dts audio code 8193 codec

  • This is great! But I got one by Cirago and it plays media and records live tv! also comes with a 500GB Hard Drive! for only $169.00

  • does it play .vob

  • How do i connect my 5.1 sorround speakers on it?

  • it has optical cable output.

  • yes it does have 1 optical

2 USB 2.0 supports 2 hard drives simultaneous

    1 HDMI

    1 composite (yellow, red, white)

  • great, what is the name of your television?

    5* by the way^^

  • iboum!

  • this is great demo, thanks!

  • can this support m2ts file from camcorder?

  • Comment removed

  • Yeah, it supports m2ts...

  • Can this support VOB files? If so, can it handle multiple audio tracks?

  • i dont know why Westeren digital release a great device like this without Divx support , i have tons of divx movies , that is why i can't buy it

  • divx = xvid = avi similar format

  • dude

this player can play DivX format

DivX is the same format as AVI or Xvid.,so Divx is playable in WD Media Player. so go buy it coz u will be able to play tons of ur divx movies with WD HD Media Player

  • hmm... *.avi is just a video file extension whilst DivX and Xvid are 2 different types of video compression methods. Depending on the encoding used, you'd need a Divx or Xvid decoder for playback. So if WD TV cannot play a divx encoded video, then you'll probably have to re-encode it which is a pain unless you upgrade the firmware. However if the file has a *.divx extension, u'd probably have to rename it to *.avi for compatibility with the device.

  • umm it supports divx

  • answers: wd tv has two usb ports. it is very quiet, silent because it does not have any fans, only heatsink inside. it plays dvd iso files (at least the ones I have tried). it does not display dvd menu witth the current firmware when playing from iso, instead jumps directly to main movie. but you can choose subtitles and audio tracks. it does not play dts, but it can send digital dts signal through optical connection if you have external audio receiver.

  • This is a very useful video review liminju!

One question, is this device quiet? and how many USB ports are their to connect external usb hard drives?

  • Two questions actually! lol

  • People!!!

Will this thing play huge HD video files. Type: 40GB files you can download from thepiratebay????

I have tons of huge movie files, they they are mkv, and my PS3 refuses to even play them after i have used tsmuxer.

please reply if you know! Im not getting this, if there is a easy way to make my ps3 play such video files.

  • Yes, perfectly.

  • dont download movies... if you want 1080 movies, go buy a bluraydrive, a blu ray dvd and rip it yourself, then convert it to a freindly h.264 .mkv with divx making it under 10gb and 1080p

  • YES it will - just make sure to use tsMuxeR to convert the DTS-HD/TrueHD audio track into something the WDTV can play as i don't think it supports it.

  • if you grabbed a 40GB mkv file, something is screwy. The biggest I have "seen" are 18GB. 8GB is the norm.

  • it supports larger files as long as your format it to Ntfs

  • can any one tell me what I need to do to play my vob files In 5.1 surround sound

do I need to convert my vob files to xvid or some other format.

could some body help me with this and If

you do I''ll post nice things about you on you tube;)

  • Hello can it play olso FULL BLU RAYS the format would be .ISO.. I'm just wondering!!! thanks

  • it can play the m2ts file from a bluray. but havn't tryed a iso. WDTV wont support a menu structure... but it will in future fw 1.3

  • My friend has this connected to a 1 TB external Hard drive -- connected to a 50 inch Plasma .... It is incredible -- He has over 400 movies ready to go a moments notice --- So cool, I had to buy one myself... WIRED magazine has a review in this month;s magazine on WD TV and other players... WD TV scored VERY high and after seeing it work in person, I know why .... Do yourself a favor and go get one.

  • I'd like to see what options you have for picture slide show. Such as types of transition and maybe playing music along with it. Does the WD TV media player do something like this? I have a TVix 4000 and it costs more, but does a lot. But for picture slide shows, I like the Windows MCE on a HTPC. It'd be cool if you can put together a sample of the picture slide show. Thanks.

  • wonderful spelling NOT

  • i just bought this,i had to convert 200gig worth of movies coz it wont play DTS audio,i used xilisoft hd converter, works great

  • A couple of questions - I know this machine plays DVD in VOB format, but does it play the menus and entire movie without having to select the next file? Also, what kind of external HD is everyone using, and does it matter which ones you use? Thanks for the help in advance.

  • UPDATE: Purchased the device, but my ripping tool doesn't create one large file - any suggestions on a free program that does this? Thanks.

  • Comment removed

  • good question i need to know that, cause the xbmc on xbox can play complete menus from dvd isos, playing from vob will not load the menus. Good thing about this, it plays mkv, i had to convert every movie to mp4 so the 360 will read it, im so gettin this.

  • I have one of these. Can I plug a media caed reader so i can play media from an sd card? Also can I hook a usb hub to increase the usb inputs?

  • I currently purchased the wd hd tv....and i was just wondering if it will play avi files in hd on a 1080p?

  • binthead.

Yes it does it all, even divx +subtitle extensions,

But for the real shit, download a mkv rip or rip yourself, and AC 5,1 sound (DTS not supported license crap) and then watch...

    So horny!!!!

  • Not dts, so what sound codes are supported?

  • Well DTS actually is supported, but needs to be done with optical audio, which is on the WDTV also, and a dts reciever on the telly.

It had no problem with all known sound files, aac flac are supported aswell, which are rarely used under movies, or even music. AC, Mp3 and a lot lot more is supported look up the specs to see em all.

  • thanks for answering so fast, looks like i need more than that, i really need a media center that could run on a network, i looked in the tvix webpage, im getting the M-6500A Rev. 2 now.

  • Nice, this is more of a budget box tho.

If you have the cash surely a Tvix player or Popcorn would be the better alternative, espeacially for networking probabilities.

I am thinking of buying a Fit-PC 2. It's like a real computer with HD capabilities, networking everything, just not for gaming obviously, but as big as a WDTV, defeneatly very NEAT.

  • Just checked the Fit-PC2 webpage, it looks great, got everything i need, but i dont think the sound output is that great? right, but 6 usb ports and power used of 10 watts tops, sounds great. thanks for the info.

  • this may sound stupid, but my tv is not hd and the movies ive downloaded are not hd, will they still work through the machine, im pretty useless at technology and any answers would be gratefully aprreciated

  • yeah, it works with any TV with the RCA cables included ( the ones with white, yellow and red conectors) and your files dont need to be HD.

Get it from amazon! right now its about $109, pretty sweet deal!

  • really appreciate your reply, thanks for letting me know, and i think ill get it from amazon, thanks again.

  • I bought this recently and it's a great little media player for the new generation of digital media. This is what is to music to ipod. It's cheap and portable. It is better and support more format than the over priced trash that Seagate recently released.

  • This is agreat little machine and I would recomend it to all...

  • I cant play X264 !!!

  • does it supports .srt files?

  • It does... I have it and it is great...

  • I have this machine but what is so disapointing about it. it dosent support a good aspect resio or video dimensions, as for the xbox and ps3 they support perfect aspect resio and video dimensions.I tryed it with my friends Forthemore, the minue of WD is so slow as well for video rewinding and forwording but for the xbox and ps3 is alot better than WD.

Vodeo graphis of xbox and ps3 is better that WD.

  • did you update your firmware ?

  • My FW is 1.0.1.0.2 i believe it's the latest.

  • when you say ps3 and xbox support good aspect res. do ps3&xbox PLAYS .MKV more than 4 gb AND .srt Files for subtitle ??? well this what wd hd does
