This gate has fascinated me since I saw a little picture of it in my 5th grade history book. Whenever I'm in Berlin, I love to go to the Pergamon and walk through it. The blue is incredible... (and everything else).
May I say Thank You-for this splended video. I recognized the construction inscription of lugal Nabu-Kuddur II. Natela B. Popkhadze in Tbilisi in Kardu//Sa-Kardu-elo
Excellent to see this! My wife & I just finished a DVD-lecture series on ancient Babylonian/Assyrian history, and some small photos of these places were included in the lecture, now we can see video! Lecture mentioned that Germany was instrumental in early archeology there. Surprised and happy they allow video footage... thank you for capturing this ancient and amazing art/architecture!
Chaldean invention, wot i mean is that this Ishtar gate was built by the inhabitants of Babylon the Chaldeans, it was during the era of the Chaldean King Nebuchednezer
There are a few other cool videos regarding Babylon on Youtube, You should try typing in Ziggurat of Marduk and Ishtar gate on google maps if you haven't done so already. Did you take any pictures of just the Ishtar gate, eg without people in front of it, a Digital still?
Of course, I have looked at the many great other YT videos on the subject. As to pictures without people ...strangely, I was not important enough that the Pergamon was temporary closed to the public, so that I could take photos :-)
I was there right after the berlin wall fell, and the all the museums were under construction. I was (unbelievably!) the only person in the museum. (pergamon and Hstoriche).
I will never forget the sensation of walking into that first sunlit room with the Pergamon gate and frieze...and then the Ishtar Gate.
Great video. Thanks for sharing! (almost missed it)

can someone tell me why are lions depicted on the babylonian wall. Aren't lions indigenous to central africa?
thesplendid1 2 years ago
Hi Splendid, the lions shown here are meant to be seen as Cherubim...work animals like those mentioned in the Garden of Eden. :)
