Love it! I've not heard this in YEARS and stumbled across it today. I had a copy of this album long ago. Panama Red and so many others... I have never met a person on earth who's even HEARD of it, and here it is. Thanks for posting!
Too slow, this song was written for the purpose of showing off. Lightning speed licks is what "Pig In A Pen" is all about, this is like hearing a drummer play "Sing, Sing, Sing" at 1/4 the speed.
@maceomaceo11 If you like this song played fast, then I invite you to listen to the Blue Mountain Bluegrass' version of "Pig in A Pen". Just search for it here on Youtube.
wb3...garcia played about ten twelve genres of music from well to out of his bleeping mind.....of course the great bluegrass artists are superb beyond belief...but give old garcia his due....if you don't believe me ask Vassar...i had seen him interviewed and he has the utmost repect for garcia...i even asked him myself before he passed....

The only 'good' on the album is Vassar's playing. He's the glue that holds the rest of drugged-out players together. The tunes are good, but they've been done BETTER by REAL bluegrass bands.
wb3 I took one of your thumps down away because like the sticker Garcia had on his guitar once said I Am An American.
He'd be into your right of free speech and what you said wouldn't mean anything to him anyway so who cares what you say. Think he might play the banjo better than full-time bluegrass players could play the electric guitar? Let alone anywhere near as good as him. Wadda ya think? Think Vassar couldn't get another gig & had to play w/ them who U say can't? Seems he had a good time
We're going out to camp in Big Sur in a few days, and I just found out one of my good friends actually has "Old & In The Way" in their i-pod. ... I can't wait till we're all drunk, and put this to play around the fireplace!!
I'm not sure why people are trashing old and in the way, if you don't like what you hear change the channel. The interplay and exchange of this band gave it, it's dynamics, such a soulful sound, love the sound of Jerry's voice and banjo, vassar clemmens fiddle, is awesom.
great music,i love it! just watched a film called greatfull dawg. awesome!
