I don't know what it's called (very new), but we were using only one hand and the objective was to redirect the other's punch to the side then come in with the same hand for your own punch. My sifu said you knew you were doing it correctly when your shoulders started burning. I'm kind of at a loss for what to do now.

I always felt forward intent as projecting force against a person, or thing with no muscle assistance. If we're even on the same page, when I apply my intent I can almost feel a force being projected against another person while grappling. It can make everything so much easier.
yea, "forward intent" is very very tough concept to figure out, because it's not so "cut and dry", there are so many "layers" to the meaning, such as "physical forward intent", "mental forward intent", "spiritual forward intent" etc.. i'm still working on it on a daily basis.

My sensei would always talk about forward intent or to have your energy forward - even when moving backwards, you're moving forwards. We do exercises to feel energy and the uke's (partners) centre....everything is from centre is a main point.
all "sensitivity based martial arts" such as BJJ, Aikido, Tai Chi, Wing Chun, Ba Gua etc... all rely on the same principles. that's why i focus on what is "similar" instead of focusing on the "differences", which is why you see them in my teaching. good stuff. take care and peace!

lol i was doing dan chi sao in my class ( on my 7th lesson ) my instructor doesn't have beginners classes he puts you right into the deep end and shows you stuff.
my partner said about the foward motion so did sifu and i did this with a punch ( i didn't hit him hard atall ) but i could feel the structure and power i could of used with the foward motion

interesting,... but almost diametrically opposite to the teaching of Mr SuiNimTao, Chu Shong Tin ... who states the the arm is brought out to its optimum angle, and then it is rotation at the shoulder (anterior deltoid) which takes over and gives strength to the movement/structure.
using your shoulder (anterior deltoid) versus your body frame (back, lats, quads, core) to strengthen a movement makes no sense to me. maybe something is lost in "translation".
My teacher always said take your shoulders out of the technique, use "centre" not strength, once you feel yourself using your centre, every technique and movement feels totally different. The backpack way is also a very good way of describing keeping and dropping centre, remaining "heavy".
I seriously doubt that Chu Shong Tin would teach you to use your shoulder... Another way to feel the forward intend, is to ask someone to slow down your movement when you do a fwd Fook Sau by adding gentle pressure of fingers or palm of the hand of your wrist, but not too much, to avoid getting tensed. Once you are used, ask more force. When you are stopped, don't try to overcome, just stay without tensing. When you are released your hand should go fwd naturally, with your body being stable.
The focus fwd should be at the wrist but driven by the elbow. Same for the backwards part of Fook Sau. Ask someone to slow down your elbow with fingers or palm, gently : always avoid tensing.

then may i suggest you watch some of his SLT videos.
the elbow is brought forwards from the body by the anterior deltoid.
it is retracted by the posterior deltoid & scapular muscles.
so "elbow energy" occurs at the shoulder, and moved as a whole body unit, by the waist and legs.
its simple biomechanics.
where else do you imagine the muscular effort to raise the arm, (and hence the end of the humerus/elbow) comes from?
