This is the traditional tempo. I heard my own relatives in Ireland 50+ years ago sing this song.
The songs were sung in local pubs and homes without loud-speakers or electric guitars. Unfortunately with the rise of the Internet and TV people no longer gather at local pubs to visit with their neighbors and sing a few tunes.
man, i wish i could find more of jimmy sweeney rockin out, i always love hitting the old triangle in halifax to listen to him play these awesome celtic songs
First came upon this song through the Orthodox Celts but being that I'm American I had trouble understanding about 30% of the lyrics. Now I can understand them all : ) Thanks Barley Bree and TommyPM
theyre not trying to be the best singers, theyre just singing it the way it would have been sung 100 years ago in a pub in ireland, and that is the way they sing on shows like this, to represent the singers of the past, in the way these songs were sung.
This is the way I first heard it from my Grandpa. And well this is Irish soul food, the music reminds me of home keeps me going while I am away at college
My 7 year old daughters just loves this version of "The Star of the County Down. I play it for her when she gets up and before she goes to sleep. I have tried to find and song by the Barley Bree, but it is either extremely expensive or it just does not exist. Is there a place where we can buy this CD? for a reasonable price?
Orthodox Celts are AWFUL. The prononciaton is horrible (you can't deny this), I can't listen for more than 10 seconds to this discrace of Irish folk music.
Look, you can't say they're awful only because of the pronounciation. I mean, why doesn't somebody comment the instrumental and the vocals (which are great in my opinion). You just stick to the pronounciation and accent like that's the main bit of the song
I am noob for Irish music, but I think Orthodox Celt version will be accepted by bigger crowd. beacuse of way they sing. This looks kinda old. No offense these guys are also great. ;)
@velebr3 Oh I like the OC's to but lol this is like my grandpappy'd play it. So it is like I was with him again listening. This is the real stuff Irish Soulfood at its finest
Different interpretations and that is what makes this tune so brilliant! This song can stand on its own without the need of a particular style or artist association with it. The song just is and that is ll it needs to be... Actually this song when it came out was probably song in many different ways and not just in this style. This arrangement certainly has a modern pop feel to it as well as an influence of the American folk scene. Good stuff!
@Barakuda15sk8 you show no respect for other nation's tradition.OC arent the only band irish influenced so there is no reason for you to glorify them like that, especially not to be rude doing it. OC put more music in their songs, but they don't get that feeling within it too, cuz they can learn to play but they cant learn mentality too.Irish folk songs are not about melody, OC do it their way but you cant say its better, its just diferent. Inace iz Srbije sam i sramota me kad vidim sl komentare
I agree, well put. Tom Sweeney is a Northerner (from Omagh) so technically is putting on a slightly Southern accent here. But who cares, it's just for effect.
I just think that it is by no means the best version of this, I think it falls a long way short, The Pogues do it great justice, a lame effort, vocally they sound like school kids reading from a blackboard, anniberlin an amatuer from Germany leaves these guys sitting at singing this...

gnagno3000 Ortodox celts are not trying to be Irish musicians and they are not trying to be better than Irish musicians, they only want to present the people in Serbia the beauty of Irish folk music and how unique it is:)
What's with all these kids saying OC's are better than these guys....these guys are Irish(have the accent) and would still be more authentic than OC's even if they had just a fiddle. So please stop saying OC's are better. They are good and without them you'd probably never hear wonderful Irish music, but Irish is Irish. Jel' u redu? I dosta vise brukanja po YT. the orthodox celts version is better.... you can't say that this is better just because the guy has a irish accent...... i think you'll agree... cheers
i beg to differ. The Orthodox Celts version is good, however, this is in fact better. not just because these guys are irish, i just like acoustic folk better. much better of a sound for music like this.

Cant say any of the versions of this on here are the real deal but this is defo better than the celts version. But there all tryin to put it on too much, its not natural enough.
