lol you guys only think emmitt is god cuz he ran behind arguably the greatest line to ever play football once he was traded to the cardinals he licked asshole cuz he didnt have his monster line blocking for him.
i love football. i love great runners. backs first, breakaway recievers second, and great return men third. all the great styles. speed, power, elusiveness. the ability to repeatedly get up and eventually make you pay. top ten lists are lame. they do a disservice to the game. best thing to do is to watch lots and lots of football.
Dickerson the fastest man ever to reach 10,000 yards rushing. Being a Rams fan I was devastated when he was traded away, too bad the Rams wouldn't pay Dickerson what he was worth.
I'd go Payton 1st, then OJ, then Jim Brown, then Eric D, with Barry 5th. Dickerson never had a negative yard game, which is a big blemish in Bary's career. Dickerson's lowest was 37 against the Redskins. Been watching football for 35 years. Barry had pretty moves, maybe the best lateral on this list, but the dancing contributed to the negative game.
ED has excellent acceleration, amazing cutback ability for a big back & strong, powerful legs that allowed him to run through tacklers. He was a very tough runner & in the open field he had a lethal stiff arm against undersized DBs. He excelled at all running plays. He set up blocks superbly on sweeps, his acceleration made him a threat on short-yardage off-tackle stuff. He ran the trap under control & with perfect timing & in the red zone, paralyzed defenses with ability to sprint to corner.
And Emmit Smith isn't in the same category as the others. He would never have had the yards and td's he compiled if he played for the bears, lions, raiders, and rams during those respective eras. the cowboys line deserves half of his accolades.
I am not so sure about that anymore. I really don't think that prior to the arrival of Larry Allen that the Cowboy OL was all that. In the early 90s,I think it was more Emtt than the Cowboy OL,especially in championship games if you look really carefully at the films. Also, in 1992 on MNF,when emmitt did what he did to Jessie tuggle and Scott case, alot of great running backs would not have been able to make that TD where he broke some six tackles. I wrote posts on ED on the segment made in 2001
emantabrizi ~ err yes, I've heard of a guy called Barry Sanders, but judging by your age on your profile it seems that you're not old enough to comment on the great Eric Dickerson.
@ Rip...there's this great thing called "NFL Films." Regardless of one's age, you can watch video of players from any era. After viewing film of both Dickerson and Sanders, I can say without hesitation that Sanders was the more exciting player to watch.
@emantabrizi LMAO? Umm.. I can buy the argument that Dickerson was the best of all time. I wouldn't necessarily agree that he's the best of all time, but surely not LMAO. Watch more football, lad.
@ "rick"...Don't be a condescending little bitch. I've been watching football for twenty years. I've seen the likes of Thurman Thomas, Barry Sanders, Emmitt Smith, Ricky Watters, Jerome Bettis, Marshall Faulk, and Bo Jackson. If...IF...there was an argument as to who is the best running back of all time, it would be between Emmitt Smith and Barry Sanders. Eric Dickerson? Top 10, at best.
you dont even know it was my birth day and i was eatin lunch at the fourth seasons in carlsbad and he was stayin there so he went to his room and got me a throw back jersey in a bag and a little statue of a Heisman and i wanted to get something sign all i had was a dollar so what now who Lonniellm? yeah dont hate appreciate
Dude... I can't believe they missed the best run I have ever seen a back pull. I am looking for the video where Eric busted through a gap in the center of the Defense so HARD! That he was 20 yards downfield before anyone on the defense could even turn around and step. That was the best damn run I had ever seen in my life. He not only went all the way but my jaw is still to the floor to this day from that run he made....
he was built like a basketball player but he had the complete package.......big ups to one of my favorite backs...and i went and got a gheri curl after dickerson
Was JIM BROWN any good? WTF yeah he was good. He shoulda been the first negro (I mean that with the most respect) to win the HEISMAN but he plowed the way for Erine Davis to win it
Emmitt hater okay, but all the Cowboys linemen including our Tightend was rejects and low round draft picks.........Know ya history be4 u talk....... Emmitt made our line cause he knew how 2 read holes......
okay first off danecook53 is a retard, not only is Emmitt Smith not the best ever he's not even the Cowboys best ever, that would be Tony Dorsett.
Top 5
1. Walter Payton
2. Barry Sanders
3. Jim Brown
4. Eric Dickerson
5. O.J. Simpson
I wouldnt even bother arguing with a retard like danecook 53 cuz he is obviously too stupid to realize Emmitt Smith had a lot of advantages these guys didnt have like having a great offensive line his entire career and 2- 4 extra games every year to pad his stats
I think you will be impressed with Jim Browns video footage, there were things he did that no running back could copy in his era, and to rush for all those yards in a 12 game schedule is amazing, if he played a few more years..........OMG
@MichealLMelvin But Jim Brown and OJ did have great offensive lines to run behind. Prior to the arrival of Larry Allen that the Cowboy OL was not all that. In the early 90s,it was more Emmitt than the Cowboy OL,especially in 1992 NFC title game if you look really carefully at the films at both TD drives in 3rd quarter. Also, in 1992 on MNF,when Emmitt did what he did to Jessie Tuggle and Scott Case, many great running backs would not have been able to make that TD where he broke 6 tackles.
Payton is overrated... Earl Campbell is a fucking man with the rock in his hand! they banned tear away jerseys and changed rules after he played... Ask any back that lowers his shoulder who they look up to... Earl Campbell was the first violent and actual OFFENSIVE runner if that makes sense... Watch the highlight tape
@MichealLMelvin hold up this might be 2 years old but how the fuck is emmitt smith not one of the best of all time...he holds the most career yards off all time and has 3 SUPERBOWLS,im a eagles fan and hate the cowboys but Cmon son get your shit right
@MichealLMelvin well you can say that but the linebackers in jim browns time were nowhere near as good as they were in emmitt smith time. so it works both ways there. i would put someone like jerome bettis or marshall faulk or even steve jackson there because they can block the pass rush alot better than the names you have there. running backs are not only about yards
walter payton barry sanders jim brown bo jackson earl campbell eric dickerson Emmitt Smith marcus allen Jerome Bettis LT Paul Hornung Edge James Jamal Lewis OJ Simpson
jamall lewis and Edge shouldn't even be on the same list as these guy. maybe roger craig or at least Thurman Thomas before those two tony dorsett, larry csonka, franco harris you could def argue those
Clearly a biased Cowboys fan. If Emmitt played for Detroit, he wouldn't have come close to breaking Peyton's record. Having the record doesn't make him the best. And only Barry's running style could have done with as little as Detroit gave him. Sweetness and Barry, my top two.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
will u know emmit has the record barry was retarted and retired in his prime because the team around him sucked balls unlike the cowboys who won 3 sperbowls with emmit smith barry just sucked and retired so shut up and for walter he was good but not good anove to keep his record.
so your a douche for 2 reasons. most people understand that emmit had a terrific line and without it wouldn't of had the career he did. secondly you like Dane Cook. Good luck with Brad Johnson you typical Cowboys fan!!
Are you an idiot? Walter Payton ran behind a shitty offensive line for most of his career. Emmit Smith had arguably the best offensive line in history blocking for him. If you just look at Walter Payton, Jim Brown, or Barry Sanders run you can tell who is better.
Only an unintelligent person responds with name calling. You obviously are young teenager who has no clue as to who you are, or what direction you are going. Learn how to spell and to use correct grammar. Get an education.
The more you say, the worse it gets. Aside from the intentional word you misspelled, you got faggot wrong. Having a dick up your ass I suppose causes people to misspell even the easiest of words. Anyhow, get back to it you turd burgler. Go ahead, take another shovel full.
ok you got me there good show but emmitt is still the best im sorry he whent to arizona and still managed more than 3 yard a carry on average so what about that
Well, the problem I have with Emmit is that he didn't have the cutting ability that Barry had. Couldn't make people miss like he did, stop on the dime and change directions. And no other player besides Peyton hit people before going out of bounds.
Good point about Smith vs. Sanders. Also, Barry played for some pretty sorry teams and Emmitt ran behind a huge and nasty O-line, not to mention playing w/ Troy Aikman and Michael Irvin, which forced opposing defenses to respect the pass as well as the run. Barry got so many of his yards on his own. Also, IMO, Jim Brown is #1 with Payton and Barry coming in at 2a and 2b.
I wonder if Jim Brown doesn't...well, he does, but maybe get better recognition by some because he hadn't played as long as the others, so with that he doesn't get mentioned that mujch because of the lack of numbers.
Absolutely, I definitely think the fact that Brown played in a different era is a huge factor in the fact that a lot younger fans might not recognize his true greatness. I'm only 32 but I love sports history, so obviously I wasn't alive when Brown played, and the only reason I have such a great appreciation for JB is because I've watched countless hours of NFL films, ESPN classic, etc. You're right though, he does get some recognition, but I still think he deserves a lot more than he gets.
Yeah, watching those old films of Brown is amazing. He's one of the biggest guys on the field, probably the strongest, and usually one of if not the fastest. I guess my best analogy if he were around today is that he would be something like a back with the size of Brandon Jacobs (or bigger) with the speed of Adrian Peterson. SICK!
dickerson arguebly the best of alltime he never had a team around em, if he did he mite b alltime leading rusher, u can say the same for barry sanders.
dones14 you are fuckin sick , eric dickerson was the best running back in history , peterson will never last more than 5 seasons with the way he plays , he is a greatback that bring back memories for us dickerson fans but he should kneel and kiss the ring
Eric Dickerson does not have the ferocity Peterson does. Not to say Eric dickerson is not Tough, but Adrian Peterson runs like he has nothing to lose, Eric runs knowing his limitations, basically if eric was not able to speed up the corner he would run as fast aiming for the sideline, while Adrian would hit head on the player how would even be stupid enough to try to tackle him. Probably breaking the tacklers leg or his own in the process.
You put too much on one season. I don't think Eric Dickerson is the best of all time, but I do think he is in the top 5. However I don't even put Peterson in talks for the Hall of Fame yet. And if you look at this season, he is having a mediocre season at best. Sure he doesn't have a passing game, but he has a much better o-line than Walter Payton, Barry Sanders, Jim Brown, or Eric Dickson. Why don't you wait a decade or so to compare a rookie to a Hall of fame running back.
Mike Ditka was referring to the 85 Bears. The 85 Bears had an offensive line. The Bears in the 70's and the early 80's most definitely did not have a good offensive line. And the Rams did not have a awesome offensive line. Just ask Jim Everett and his concussions.
hahah dang super high light reel as an intro to buy a magic belt. Can't knock the Eric Dickerson hustle. Heck Yea!

Probably breaking the tacklers leg or his own in the process.

lol another trendy footbal fan. Compairing a hall of famer to a rookie, that takes brilliance. Not to mention your takes are stupid and wrong.

Eric Dickerson had an awesome offensive line and mike ditka said himself that the bears offensive line was up there with some of the best all time

Mike Ditka was referring to the 85 Bears. The 85 Bears had an offensive line. The Bears in the 70's and the early 80's most definitely did not have a good offensive line. And the Rams did not have a awesome offensive line. Just ask Jim Everett and his concussions.

Eric Dickerson would right through defenses at silent movie speed.

dickenson is a finese back which means he has a better lower center gravity than AD and has better elusivity
peterson is a power back with speed meaning he would rather take your head off than avoid u...
also i wouldnt say he runs like peterson even if he does, he is legend here not AD if u are comparin the 2 say peterson runs like him. just saying
