And to top it off, it was the famous James Cleveland's Southern California Community Choir (and band) used for this scene. I gotta give it to director/producers...they really did their homework!
My wife is one of the dancers in the front about one minute into the film. Brown dress with flowers. One of the first jobs that all the black women got the job and didn't have to settle for one or two positions.Met all of them. Great people.
I grew up in the South Chicago area that this church is in. on 91st and Baltimore. In the movie clip when Jake and Elwood come in from outside you can see Our Lady of Guadalupe Church across the street. I named my daughter after this church. This church is call Pilgrim Baptist. There is also another Pilgrim Baptist in Chicago that is the Adler and Sullivan landmark on 33rd and Michigan that suffered a terrible fire in 2005.
I absolutely love this movie, and this scene is one of the reasons why. It is a bit exaggerated, but it shows the high octane volume of African-American churches, especially the Apostolic ones.
My all time fav scene from The Blues Brothers. And that's saying alot, because there's several cool scenes in this flick. This clip seems to have a bit more to it in terms of the dance sequences, than what I see on cable. I could be wrong though.
Hey BarbaraFaithCo, that isn't Jim it's John. I taught @ Wheaton Central High School, Wheaton Il. where John was a all-state shortstop on the baseball team. He was young and agile, and he showed it in the movie. I consider this movie a " cult " classic, it makes me smile to this day. Elwood
Great video. The whole scene in it's entirety would be nice. All of it. Begiining with James Brown's sermon all the way to the whole dance choreography with nothing cut out.
This is what I call CHURCH. It is beautifully choreographed and the music is superb. James Brown is soul brother number one. And it's a fun scene, too, with cool Jim Belushi.
lol i love Elwood's dance . i would go to church if mys was like that . . i love this movie . they bought some of the greatest musician in it . it looked like they had a fun time making this move . blues brothers 200 suck so much . Beacuse jhon was not there .
I remember seeing this movie in the summer of 1980 when I was 9. This was my favorite part of the movie always, seeing the men leap in the air and swirling like 15-20 feet in the air. Still makes me laugh today.
God this movie has so many numbers that just make me want to get up and dance to them!
Were people dancing in the theatres when this came out? I wasn't around for it but when I saw it for the first time, on DVD, I could imagine people just getting up and dancing in the aisles.
I worked at a radio station in the 1980's right after this movie came out. We had a BLACK GOSPEL hour each night for one hour, and we slipped this into the lineup... James Brown singing...from the Blues Brothers, and nobody was the wiser.
niggas acting ridiculous..lol...southern baptist churchs aint nuthin but crunk scenes,,niggas in church gettin crunk off words and music and dancing then sayin "damn that was a good sermon...lol,,, classic movie tho.
I have been to churches like this! Gospel is the root of soul music. It came out of the slavery days when they had to work in the fields and on Sunday they could let loose and express themselves, it was a release. Dan Ackroyd is quite and expert in blues music, this movie was his brainchild.
this the way a baptist church suppose to do elwood got the spirit he's a clown can dance dont a baptsit church fun like this james was dancing that man turn that note n the ar wow elwood did that flip hahahahah james did the footwork yea rip mr jaaaaaaames brown

buddy of mine did not belive me, most dont..freeze it at 2:00 and the black women you see, is Chaka Khan before she was Chaka Khan! haha!
RobertLee25 3 years ago
This movie was made in 1981.
Chaka Khan officially changed her name from Yvette Stevens to the African "Chaka" in the late 60s. And she had fame with the band Rufus in the 70s.
That is Chaka Khan, but it's not *before* she was famous.
jltc008 3 years ago
I agree. I thought I was the only person who noticed her in the choir. Most people think I am crazy when i saw Chaka was in this movie
