Met him in the 60's when he hosted a dance show in Newark, New Jersey. He drove my brother and me back to NYC - we were so thrilled to be with our idol. And he was so handsome out of makeup.

Shock Theatre and the Cool Goul, also known as Roland in the Philly area, was one of the few things that could get a early teenage boy off the streets and home on time by 11PM to watch these scary movies. Most of these movies were already 20 to 30 years old at the time but they were Classics. I liked when Roland, through the use of special affects, would project himself into a segment of the movies scenes. Great times in a Great era. Ron

Budget isn't always a problem. Often guys like Karloff would make an appearance gratis. I remember Sinatra and Sammy Davis Jr. on Soupy Sales. That was a freebie.

I first "heard" of Mr.Zacherle from one of his albums called Monster Mash. I played that vinyl to...(pardon the pun)..to death! until recently I have never known about his old programs but I am now looking for some...Thank you for posting this!

The reason why you never got Karloff on was because Zacherle's productions were always so low budgeted that the producers probably wouldn't have paid out enough for that...

I was the world's bigest fan of Zacherly's "Shock Theater" back in '58 as a kid in a New York suburb. I got some of it on a DVD.

It was CHILLER Theatre. In other parts of the US it may have gone by another name.
