  • I have seen this performed live so many times, and I still can't believe the guitar work WHILE he's singing. Blows my mind every time.

  • @MsCanarian No doubt!.I absolutely love the acoustic work he does on this song.

  • to my darling Son Jake, sometimes i was on that ledge, but the love of you has always kept me here. dont ever be afraid to be who you are.xxx

  • @1961webby who ever was kind enough to like my post at that time. you have no idea how much difference it made. thank you all x

  • OMG I was at a BNL show at UMASS with my daughter.. but not this show, it was way before 2006. I just realized Ed is having a bit of fun with the lyrics in this performance.... ha ha, good show, Ed.

  • 9 people have no one to catch them when they fall.

  • I am singing this song for my voice recital in 3 hours!!

  • 9 people never heard of BNL.

  • One of the few bands that I listen to, that can actually pick me up when I'm feeling low. Good Times.

  • awesome band....epic song man

  • One of my fave bands ever besides coldplay, my favorite song by them. :)

  • I so love this song, thanks for posting

  • i didnt say blow me lol

  • best band ever with or wihout steve page

  • "I cant look below me...Did he just say blow me?" LOL ED IS HILARIOUS XDDD

  • Mes pensées sont éparts....Tiens! une bière!....Love you all!. Peace out!

  • my fave song without a doubt.

  • This acoustic guitar work is so sweet!!

  • love this song so much. makes me sad and happy!!!!

  • This song is a masterpiece -- When you say "its about window washers", you can't help to think that this an isolate theme, but there is so much depth and so much that rings in many's minds. From the fight against heights, seeing the desperation from behind windows, to the finally hearing the man say what he loves about this job ... it is pure beauty and depth

  • I saw these guys for the first time this weekend, after listening to them for over a decade. Now I'm even more obsessed. They're not just musicians, they're overall entertainers. Amazing ones, at that!

  • I sing it in Karaoke and cry each time.. don't know why but damn I feel something so much emotion fear and sadness .. and its one of the most fantastic songs .. I dispose the heights thing I think its more, not living your dreams , just doing the job to keep going not doing the job to really live .. eh' what do i know , but its a damn good song! so many ways to bisect it!

  • @Distilled13 I definitely agree that it's a great song, but if you bisect it you really only get 2.... I'd say you can dissect it many different ways. But yea...

Anyway, BNL is probably the best band to ever have happened.

  • Just an overall great song. Lyrics and vocals both sweet. Also has that typically tasteful acoustic guitar work for BNL that's easy to take for granted. It's always there, but it's not just fluff, some of it is superb. That's huge to me as I love acoustic guitar driven music. Of course they're all fantastic like any great band.

  • Yeah, I like acoustic guitar driven songs too, but I also REALLY like how the two of them sing chords. They've very musically aware.

  • No doubt regarding the vocals, absolutely superb. I have my PC tied into my Klipsch system with a killer sound card and I just noticed the incredible detail of the guitar work. You guys would probably know better than me on this one. I know Ed is a great acoustic guitarist and it appears he's the main guy on most stuff. Steven plays as well of course, but maybe not in Ed's caliber. The 3rd guitarist I see occasionally, is he just electric or is he sharing the acoustic load as well. Love to know

  • You are correct as far as Steven and Ed's ability - Page is competent, but they are not really on the same level. Ed is much better at playing guitar. The third guy you occasionally see is Kevin Hearn. He basically plays anything and everything, but was mainly the band's keyboardist until the last few years. I never realized he played guitar until I saw them live. Nothing fancy, just bits where they needed a third guitar or maybe some stuff that was beyond Steven's ability.

  • I appreciate the reply. I'm relatively new to the guys and am just eating their stuff up here on youtube. They're truly amazing. I am one of these guys who likes to know exactly what each member is doing, especially live, to get a better feel for musicianship.(no studio help). On the videos I've never seen Kevin out front playing acoustic, but I have a hunch he's a 3rd acoustic at times based on the complexity of some of what I'm hearing. Ed is absolutely superb as I love his playing style.Enjoy

  • My fav BNL song, hands down.

  • This song and Light up my room have to be my two favourite BNL songs.

  • i love this song.. i didnt know the name if it or the artist cuz i heard it at my friends house so i was like looking for it for like hours till my friend jake finally told me

  • "did he just say blow me"

    lol I love that part

  • classic

  • this song is soooo goood

  • one of the saddest songs I ever heard.

  • Did Steve leave for good?

  • I think it might've had something to do with his pro piracy looks, and his record labels anti piracy looks

  • that's what Steve is saying.... but we all know there's going to be a reunion tour soon enough :)

  • hes so fucking good i would go gay for ed

  • I just heard Ed sing this via phone love at the band's first fantastic foursome show... needed more, so I came here. He didn't change the lyrics tonight though, sang it as written.

  • I love Ed Robertson's voice! Great song!!!

  • Favorite song by a really good band to see live! They clearly enjoy themselves on stage. You know that they give it their all every night,

  • what i love about barenaked ladies is that, unlike alot of bands, they are acctually great to see live!

  • Exactly! And when you go to a show, you know you're not going to just get music. It's like a variety show =P

  • Man they harmonize so well. I love when Steve comes in, it gives me chills everytime.

  • What did he change the lyrics to that the audience laughed at? I couldn't make it out.

  • I can't look below me. Did he just say, "Blow me?"

    haha. I love Ed!

  • I love this song:) Beautiful performance!

  • very touching and emotionally driven track.....BNL best tune without question...very underrated band...thx for posting

  • i love this song...

  • their most underrated and underplayed song....just the way I like it

  • Most moving BNL song. So deep.

  • LOVE this song, he's so talented - they all are.

  • BNL is the only few musicians nowadays that can express sincere thoughts and emotions in such amazing lyrics combined with catchy tunes. what a gifted band.

  • @davidmjeong926 i totally agree with u dude....

  • I love the bass part in this song. Jim uses both the bow and his fingers. It makes it sound AMAZING

  • Such a beautiful song. The bridge gives me goosebumps every time. This makes me want to move to Vancouver and visit the Park every day and listen to BNL all day.

  • This, old apartment, and brian wilson are just about the only songs in existence that make me feel "emotions". Lol I can't listen to them in public.

  • How about: 'What a Good Boy'

  • I love that song too. Probably next on the list. Doesn't really effect me as much.

  • war on drugs makes me cry

  • definitely one of my favorite songs of all time

  • one of the saddest songs I ever heard.really loved their stuff before 'stunt'

  • does anyone have the tabulature for this, because all the tabs are nothing to do wirth the capo being on teh fifth fret

  • the capo should be on the fourth fret

  • It is....

  • that was a response to carispa

  • starts late

  • does anyone have any mp3 versions of this. If you do could you please contact me. Thanx

  • Beautiful

  • I was lucky enough to be able to hear them sing this song in Saint Paul from the front row after I had talked to Ed and Steve about the song earlier

  • It's my most favourite song ever!

  • OMG! I remember hearing this song once when they released a few of their songs on the internet and I absolutely LOVED it but then they took it down and they didn't put it on the cd...Now I shall download it on limewire! YAY!

  • this song was on 2 of their albums, "Born on a Pirate Ship", and their live album "Rock Spectacle"

  • it's on Born on a Pirate Ship.

  • Love this song and Ed!

  • This song is kickass!! Long live Steve and Ed.

  • Thanks for posting this. Happiness is hearing Ed and Steve harmonize live and you know it's not created in the studio. Those two really sound great together.

  • Ya, I am always so impressed by their live show. There are so few acts that sounds just as good as the CD, but they these guys are at the top of this exclusive list.

  • I can't help but compare them to The Band. Both Canadian (mostly), both bands made up of multi-talented musicians, both sound excellent live. Hopefully one day BNL will be considered legends like The Band, they deserve it. So much musical talent is rare in today's computerized music industry.

  • I got to see them in Philly - 2nd row! They rocked, as usual. Thanks so much for sharing.

  • This is one of the greatest songs they have EVER written. You, whoever you are, have the most divine granted luck of anyone on this Earth to be standing front row center! Was this concert actually in october of this year??

  • Yes it was Oct. 24, 2006 in Amherst, MA

  • we went to the one in NH before you i think they played this

  • OK I'm sorry, this song, this band and all that they are and still are including Ed and Steve as a pair! Nothing will erase this moment that started it all...both counselors at Scarborough Music Camp located in Manitoulin, Ontario, Canada. From then on till now...yea whatever it became don't let it slip away.

Minor casualties aside (relating to Page) it's all good! From Northern Ontario (Sault Area) you guys ROCK! In very good ways!

  • Best song ever! I was in such a state of shock when they started it that I didn't actually believe they were playing it.

Thanks so much for posting! :)

  • Yeah it's my Favorite BNL song and I was excited as well so I had to video tape it.

  • That looks like Amherst. I was a little behind and to the right. Awesome show! Great clip!

  • Yoda you lucky person- good view!

BNL live- fantastic as usual. This new tour looks top notch, thanks again for these clips.
