OMG I was at a BNL show at UMASS with my daughter.. but not this show, it was way before 2006. I just realized Ed is having a bit of fun with the lyrics in this performance.... ha ha, good show, Ed.
This song is a masterpiece -- When you say "its about window washers", you can't help to think that this an isolate theme, but there is so much depth and so much that rings in many's minds. From the fight against heights, seeing the desperation from behind windows, to the finally hearing the man say what he loves about this job ... it is pure beauty and depth
I saw these guys for the first time this weekend, after listening to them for over a decade. Now I'm even more obsessed. They're not just musicians, they're overall entertainers. Amazing ones, at that!
I sing it in Karaoke and cry each time.. don't know why but damn I feel something so much emotion fear and sadness .. and its one of the most fantastic songs .. I dispose the heights thing I think its more, not living your dreams , just doing the job to keep going not doing the job to really live .. eh' what do i know , but its a damn good song! so many ways to bisect it!
@Distilled13 I definitely agree that it's a great song, but if you bisect it you really only get 2.... I'd say you can dissect it many different ways. But yea...
Anyway, BNL is probably the best band to ever have happened.
Just an overall great song. Lyrics and vocals both sweet. Also has that typically tasteful acoustic guitar work for BNL that's easy to take for granted. It's always there, but it's not just fluff, some of it is superb. That's huge to me as I love acoustic guitar driven music. Of course they're all fantastic like any great band.
No doubt regarding the vocals, absolutely superb. I have my PC tied into my Klipsch system with a killer sound card and I just noticed the incredible detail of the guitar work. You guys would probably know better than me on this one. I know Ed is a great acoustic guitarist and it appears he's the main guy on most stuff. Steven plays as well of course, but maybe not in Ed's caliber. The 3rd guitarist I see occasionally, is he just electric or is he sharing the acoustic load as well. Love to know
You are correct as far as Steven and Ed's ability - Page is competent, but they are not really on the same level. Ed is much better at playing guitar. The third guy you occasionally see is Kevin Hearn. He basically plays anything and everything, but was mainly the band's keyboardist until the last few years. I never realized he played guitar until I saw them live. Nothing fancy, just bits where they needed a third guitar or maybe some stuff that was beyond Steven's ability.
I appreciate the reply. I'm relatively new to the guys and am just eating their stuff up here on youtube. They're truly amazing. I am one of these guys who likes to know exactly what each member is doing, especially live, to get a better feel for musicianship.(no studio help). On the videos I've never seen Kevin out front playing acoustic, but I have a hunch he's a 3rd acoustic at times based on the complexity of some of what I'm hearing. Ed is absolutely superb as I love his playing style.Enjoy
i love this song.. i didnt know the name if it or the artist cuz i heard it at my friends house so i was like looking for it for like hours till my friend jake finally told me
I just heard Ed sing this via phone love at the band's first fantastic foursome show... needed more, so I came here. He didn't change the lyrics tonight though, sang it as written.
BNL is the only few musicians nowadays that can express sincere thoughts and emotions in such amazing lyrics combined with catchy tunes. what a gifted band.
Such a beautiful song. The bridge gives me goosebumps every time. This makes me want to move to Vancouver and visit the Park every day and listen to BNL all day.
OMG! I remember hearing this song once when they released a few of their songs on the internet and I absolutely LOVED it but then they took it down and they didn't put it on the cd...Now I shall download it on limewire! YAY!
Thanks for posting this. Happiness is hearing Ed and Steve harmonize live and you know it's not created in the studio. Those two really sound great together.
Ya, I am always so impressed by their live show. There are so few acts that sounds just as good as the CD, but they these guys are at the top of this exclusive list.
I can't help but compare them to The Band. Both Canadian (mostly), both bands made up of multi-talented musicians, both sound excellent live. Hopefully one day BNL will be considered legends like The Band, they deserve it. So much musical talent is rare in today's computerized music industry.
This is one of the greatest songs they have EVER written. You, whoever you are, have the most divine granted luck of anyone on this Earth to be standing front row center! Was this concert actually in october of this year??
OK I'm sorry, this song, this band and all that they are and still are including Ed and Steve as a pair! Nothing will erase this moment that started it all...both counselors at Scarborough Music Camp located in Manitoulin, Ontario, Canada. From then on till now...yea whatever it became don't let it slip away.
Minor casualties aside (relating to Page) it's all good! From Northern Ontario (Sault Area) you guys ROCK! In very good ways!
I have seen this performed live so many times, and I still can't believe the guitar work WHILE he's singing. Blows my mind every time.
