Let me explain; the reason why the "lover" shot Big John is because he used to be the little nine year old boy in the picture. Howie is 'the before', and the Lover is 'the after'. The pediphile wasnt the hero! If you thought he was the hero, then you would have been naive enough to get into the car with him. The director is showing how slippery a pediphile can prey on the emotions of a lonely child. Big John was a professional stalker, he was just taking his time trapping his prey.
