What causes the Erath to freeze is the influx of massive amounts of fresh water dumped into the oceans. It stops the ocean currents from moving and slows down and changes the weather in the atmosphere and the inner depths of oceans. It prevents ultimately the Earth from heating the ice and snow in the cooler areas of the planet, like in London; aka London Fog !

To all of you, there is no such thing as scientific fact. Everything is a theory because knowledge is not absolute. Gravity is still a theory, you know. Look it up.

But this theory has an abundance of counter-evidence, as convincing as it sounds in this documentary.

@xEva02x A scientific theory is a principal that has been tested and observed many times and confirmed to be true and accepted. As technology improves and scientists receive more detailed and accurate data, the scientific theories have stood the test of time. Theory is a very difficult title to obtain in science. The way you present the word "theory" makes it suggest that it is still an idea rather than a tried and true explanation.

Also Snowball Earth is still a hypothesis rather than a theory.

This is so stupid. Anyone with slightest sense of logic and knowledge of geology would instantly know that a so called "snowball earth" could have never happened. The carbon dioxide cycle would have and will prevent any such event. As water surfaces freeze and land is covered in snow, they stop absorbing CO2, which then accumulates in the atmosphere, warming up the globe and reversing the freeze. Where would all the CO2 from volcanos go if earth is frozen over? Into the behinds of these morons?

If you believe that, you would believe anything. Let me guess: Faith School (or Home schooling)? Evangelical? Republican/Tea Party? Bible Belt dweller? Climate Science denier? End-of timer? Evolution denier?....how many did I get right?

@vjwebster What a rude man! Science is open to discussion, reevaluation and dismissal if proven wrong. It is not a religion that abjures analysis and scorns examination. Logic is the guideline of science.

And how exactly questioning a new theory concerning 600 million years ago earth is connected to any American political party, is only clear to your kind who have taken geology and/or climatology as a new religion instead of science, that if one challenges them, he would be a blasphemer.

@hotboyclarence You have dismissed peer-reviewed scientists' hypothoses with a blanket declaration that they are stupid. Unlike you, they are aware that there would be no accumulation of CO2 in the virtual absence of life (apart from cyanobacteria which don't produce CO2 - they consume it) or volcanic activity. It was only when the latter recommenced that CO2 levels rose again. Your proclamation, with its combination of certainty, arrogance and ignorance, reminds one of an evangelical preacher

@vjwebster Ms., just because something is "peer" (viz friends) reviewed, it does not become a fact, but a theory, until logical water tight evidence is provided to support it. So, in your 'expert' opinion, where did 50 million years worth of carbon dioxide and sulfur dioxide belched out by earth's volcanos go, if not into the atmosphere to create a greenhouse world? In absence of an ocean or the bare soil to absorb them, these greenhouse gases would accumulate in the air, melting the world

@hotboyclarence ... and you weren't questioning anything - you were just dismissing it out of hand, just like the Pope did to early enlightenment scientists like Galilei and Giordano Bruno. @lueljohn not so fast. They now have that theory about melting ice flooding the atlantic with fresh water which shuts off the heat pump and turns Britain into a polar region. This has happened in the geologic past.

@lueljohn Wish I could be so confident... worthwhile watching the whole series. Try watching Pt.1/2 and see what the late Russian climate modeller Mikhail Budyko worked out as far as tipping points are concerned.
