I think the the worst part about this was the instrumentals. OH GOSH that was HORRIBLE. Vowels were a slight problem for the choirs, but notes seemed pretty good. Pickups weren't the best, but pretty darn good. Work on balance, it seemed a little laking in the lower parts. Not too bad for a high school. Hopefully early next year there'll be a good recording of the TMEA choir (ochestra?), as we're doing this for our auditions. Choir's fine. Instrumentals, not so much. Work on them. (lol Kneebone)
@Bluekid239 excuse me, that should be LACKING in the lower parts, not laking. It's late, I'm tired. To clarify, i can't hear the men too well. Either make the women a little quieter or give the men more self confidence. That should do it. I would have clarified in the comment but I ran out of characters to use.
this crap sucks. come and listen to Fike High School. Not only are the instrumentals better are vocals kick your ass. we are going to get a video up on youtube pretty soon.
Maybe they're trying to challenge the students and raise the standards of the ensemble? I as a student pressured our band director into selecting a piece that was way over our heads. But we learned it and sounded pretty good performing it.
Certainly not perfect, but not friggin' bad for a high school. The number of people on stage are approximately the size of my entire high school. :) Thanks for posting!
The director of the choir doesn't like the dark sound and encourages and brighter tone. Its just a different style. It's not wrong, or right, and a darker tone does not equal maturity. A forced dark tone in high school choirs sounds rediculous and is actually not good for a developing voice.
This is my high school's marching band theme this year, and it was great to finally connect what we were playing to this arrangement. Somewhat bad brass playing, but overall a very good performance.
I was just in a performance of Mass of the Children for the ACDA voices united childrens honors choir(August 9) and we were directed by John Rutter. It was amazing. I counted and over the 3 days we were there, we(the childrens choir) had a total of 22 hours of scheduled rehersal. I was a soprano(1).
My mom was in that I thought it was really good I wish I had gotten to be in the real choir but because there were so many applicants I didn't get picked
And by the way - if one line comments are "pointless" in your opinion - at least I could write 13 words, and not 2 like someone else on this blog - oh wait, that was YOU!
Oh yes, I did respond directly to your comment. For the record, it is not enough "right", to call it good. The first movement suffers greatly from the conductor not even being near the tempo Rutter wants for the movement. (It should be in 1 and not slow enough to hack through in 3.)
The performance of the brass unfortunately brings down the entire level of the performance of the choir, which is quite good. ie: see the original one line comment I made. Keep your comments about this particular video, no personal attacks. So don't talk about tact. For any HS kid wanting to go onto to a professional career in music (this HS program I am sure produces some fine college freshmen in conservatory) there is a reality that can't be denied in this video. Additional advice: "practice"
Sorry for not getting back to you sooner, but you didn't respond to my comment, hence I was not notified that you made it. Now: Good job. That's more like it :) Simple one line comments like the one you originally made are pointless.
And for the record, there was much more right than there was wrong in the performance.
When my high school did this, we hired brass players, because ours were a bunch of freshman, and the trombone player showed up drunk. It was still good though.
That's a good idea, but let me tell you what I think you were trying to do. You were trying to talk about this high school and belittle their performance just because they had a few wrong notes. That's what we, in the real world, call being a "hater". It's not attractive, nor is it needed, so keep hurtful comments like that to yourself. There is something called tact, and you appear to have none when you go around talking about people and not offering additional advice on how to improve.

Good sound....definetly difficult piece we just performed this at our "Holiday Pageant"....it is definetly a brighter sounding choir.

go get a band and it would be good but this is not a band this is a bunch of first time players attempting to do something.

I got the priveldge back in highschool to sing this in church. To do somthing like this with a full orchestra is so amazing. I had so much fun.

Clearly the choral program is stronger than the brass program at this school.

Yes, it is clear. So why did you have to point it out?

Because that is what a blog is. The chance to state the obvious and other opinions.

lol...clearly...
I just wish the musicians would've been able to take this up to tempo. Good performance though by the chorus.
