Bruce wrote the opening to Motorman....and Paul has said it is Extremely difficult to play correctly. If you were at the Whisky show...Paul stopped the show to practice the intro before the song.

In addition to what these other guys have said, I believe Paul has also said that he generally doesn't sweep-pick because he feels like he falls out of time more easily (although to our mere human ears it's probably unnoticeable ;)), so the combination of all these things probably means he sometimes doesn't feel quite comfortable with the intro.
