  • Good points but I would disagree with jumprope not being effective....fast pace jumprope with a running in place movement is up there with sprinting.

  • Running burns shed loads of fat compard

  • Oh hello! Have you heard the talk about - fast abs magic (do a search on google)? Ive heard some amazing things about it and my sister got detailed Six pack abs and lost tons of weight with it.

  • Swimming not effective? Try doing 5 x 200meters butterfly. The worse technique you have, the more exercise it is. Having been a competetive swimmer, I can tell you that generalizing swimming as a low cost activity (kcalwise) is just not good. Otherwise I like your videos. Thanks for sharing your thoughts :)

  • I'm surprised that swimming isn't a a big aerobic exercise. I thought it would be at least as effective as walking.

  • So you are saying getting your heart rate up by smoking crack doesn't count as exercise?

  • On a somewhat irrelevant note, A teacher in college once told me you could slow your heart rate down by taking very deep breaths that last 10 seconds then exhailing for 10 seconds and you do this about 4-5 times. The purpose of this was to calm yourself down if you were anxious before a test or something and it actually works!

  • your the only bloke that know what he is talking about on youtube! the rest of these wannbies all talk about weights , when really running , jogging and etc are really the best! i will be watching more of your vids.... keep up the good work!

  • woahh! jumping rope is possibly the best cardio exercise you can do. 10 mins of rope jumping is equivalent to 25-30 mins of jogging. i thoroughly recommend jumping rope as an alternative to running or cycling etc. If jumping rope was not effective then why do all pro boxers use this form of cardio?? jumping rope can in some cases burn more calories than running

  • @paulioj101 This is NOT true. Yes jumping rope raises your heartrate and probably develops some cardiovascular strength, but it does not burn as many calories as running/sprinting...not even close. Boxing is a sport of rhythm, jumping rope helps with rhythm and hand/foot coordination.....or so they say. I never did a lot of it. Lifeline Jump Ropes started right here in my home town and sort of know the guy that started it all. Never thought much of it then...and still don't.

  • Steve, I really like your videos, but I disagree with the jumping rope part.

Jump rope is much more intense than jogging in my oppinion. I can jog up to an hour with no problems, but jump rope kills me after 15-25 minutes. You use your legs (talk about burning calves) AND your upper body. It's a great overall fitness workout if done correctly.

I would compare running with fast jump roping.

Anyway, you're videos are great, you are speaking the truth most of the time ;D

    Greetings

  • Let me tell you someting... If you swim intensly for an hour you are going to burn a good chunk of calories. If you jump rope for an hour you are going to burn a shit load of calories. It does not require a hole leg recruitment to be effective cardio. I dont know what cracker jack BS he got this from but its not true. Intensity and or duration are the keys to cardio that burn calories.

  • He's right, I've seen my most weight loss come when I did high intensity cycling and those hills REALLY kicked my butt (literally).

  • based on what u said, intense weightlifting would be the best method nothing uses more calories than that right. so by weight training alone u should be able to get a great six pack.

  • I don't think you heard what he's saying. Weight training. like all activity, will burn SOME calories. IF you add some lean muscle tissue you will burn a few extra calories as well...at least while you're up and moving. Besides that, it's cardio that burns the most cals and a controlled diet that keeps cal consumption under control. The largest part of the whole equation however, is your activity. Diet is second. Your activity includes Weights, Cardio, and EVERYTHING else you do all week long.

  • so would an olyptical be one of the best tools for fat burning? I have a gym here where i work, it's fully loaded, it also has tredmills. I'm also going to look through your videos.. wondering if you have any tips on diet

  • i'm all about the stairmaster. it uses a large group of leg muscles, and you sweat a lot, which is good. but man, time seems to go by in slow motion, compared to using a treadmill or elliptical.

  • stair master is the way to go.dont even look at the others.

  • I wasn't sure which activity really was better at reducing weight; Swimming,.or Jogging? While out in California I put it to the test. I ran AND swam for 1 hour a piece. Some of the loss would be water weight. I ran for 1 hour and found when completed, that I was almost 2 lbs. lighter! The next day I went for a 1 hour swim out near Catalina Island. When I got done with the swim, I was an incredible 34 lbs. lighter!! Unfortunately is was because a shark had taken my leg...but still.

  • LOLForeals

  • how about jumping jacks and squat thrust?

  • Still not nearly as good as walking or jogging at burning fat and calories.

  • if you do kick boxing for an hour intensely, using both legs and arms, do you believe that is more effective?

  • That is correct! Heart rates differ based on age, fitness levels, weight, activity, etc.

  • This is the problem I have with answering questions. I didn't DIS your sport but it's just not as effective at burning calories as running. And you do not use the LEGS as completely swimming as you do with running.

  • Correct me if i'm wrong, but are you saying an athlete that runs say 3-4 miles a day is burning more calories then one who is swimming the same distance? Training with the same focus and intensity, i'm pretty sure that you'll burn more calories swimming because there are more muscles involved. It's also a non-impact exercise which is another plus. Sorry I couldn't let you diss my sport like that, i've been a competitive swimmer for over 15 years and am applying that towards Triathlon training.

  • Swimming 4 miles may burn more calories than running 4 miles, problem is it would take you a lot longer to swim 4 miles. Running is more efficient in that you can burn more calories per minute of work than swimming.

  • You can bike and still put on muscle.

  • great explanation.thanks...5 stars

  • Yep. Too much arms and shoulders but no legs being used.

  • would somethin like a speed bag fall under the swimming/aerobics category? I'll do it forever but dont really feel like its cardio

  • YES!

  • So I've been holding my breath for long periods of time for nothing? CRAP!

  • oh come on... you sound like he owes you something. or you pay him for the videos.

    >>Sometimes its not what you have to say but how people hear it.

if you want some "quality", but crappy info with good audio, go somewhere else.

Steve's delivering high quality CONTENT for those who aren't looking for HD videos. And that's greatly appreciated by his subscribers.

  • I'm not sure where you are finding your research but if you look at peer reviewed professional journals(a credible source for information) on swimming and fat/calorie burn you will change your statement about how swimming isn't as effective as running.

  • how to get rid of ur arm's fat?

  • thats called spot reduction and it really doesn't work. its the same as taking water out of a pool as steve says. you cant just take 1 foot out of the shallow end, it all just comes off the top. you just have to increase ur cardio more or somethin, check his video to make sure tho

  • 10 minutes will do it if it's intense. Remember, we burn fat all day long we just don't burn much. So after about 15-20 mintues of cardio your body then releases more fat for energy. But if you start cardio faster it will happen quicker.

  • Thanks for the clear cut info. I have read/heard there is a point in time you need to reach(20 minutes) of intense exercise(Biking, running) before you depleate your ready available energy and your body uses the fat storage as you stated. Is this Right? Will 10 minutes do or increase to 30 or does it matter at all?

  • I started jumping rope a few months ago and at first, my heart was beating out of my chest after only about 5 jumps. Now I can jump for 10 minutes and my heartbeat doesnt even noticably increase. I always thought this meant I needed to find another exercise to increase my heart rate. Is Steve saying that jumping rope is just as effective now as it was 6 months ago?? It doesnt seem like it...

  • Not really...Steve is saying for an aerobic activity to burn a significant amount of stored energy (fat), it needs to incorporate a lot of muscles. His reasoning is that the quads are the largest muscles in the body, and he is correct. Larger muscles burn more calories when they are used, that's why jogging is effective.

What happened with you and jumping rope is that your cardiovascular system became conditioned to the exercises, thus you need to do more strenuous activity to increase it.

  • real good advice.

    *favorites

  • jumping rope burns a lot calories

  • love the videos, but doesn't simming consume more calories than running?

  • biking?

  • alot of people neglect the legs - its a major major part of your body! good information.

  • Hi Steve-you are a true motivation for a begginer like myself.I need to lose 10 kilos in 3 months.I am already on a diet programme and i was considering starting tae bo lessons which i like so much. Is that a good weight loss exercise along with the trendmil? How many times/week should i do that?3-4?Kisses from sunny Greece!!!

  • I thought that skipping rope was equal to running if not better... but how much better is running ?

  • I don't know if I missed it, but what about cycling? Is there also a difference between on the road and on a stationary bike?

  • Hey Guys...your heart is a muscle and in the simple act of beating it is burning calories and/or fat at a minimum. But we all do get Steve's great message...Excercise!

  • Elliptical trainer aren't bad but they can be a bit easy to use. If you're able to increase the resistance a bit it would make them more effective.

  • I was kinda skeptical at first, but after viewing a few videos, I think he knows his shit.

Kinda funny now that I think about it. I work at a gym and theres a group of fat dudes that jump rope for about 30 minutes each workout, yet they're still fat as ever. There's also a group of 5 guys that run and use the elipticals for about 30-45 minutes everyday and they're in awesome shape. Now I understand why.

  • Thanks for having an open mind and the ability to make a very educated observation. That's how learning occurs. I commend you!

  • So ANYTHING that puts a demand on your muscles enough to cause the need for aerobic energy is an effective weight loss tool so long as you can maintain a good heart rate.

Therefore, swimming is good for weight loss, and you are wrong.

  • So swimming is not as effective at burning fat as walking is?

I call BS. Burning fat is caused by your body converting from using glycogen directly from the muscle to making the body break down fat to get a supply of ATP. Because aerobic exercises need O2, thats why heart rate is closely linked to burning fat. The faster it is beating as a result of your muscles demand for oxygen, the faster your heart is going to beat.

  • Also, if you want to use your legs more while swimming laps, you can. Just kick harder.

  • Even kicking while swimming does not utilize the quadriceps as completely or intensely as running. Plus, intense swimming is too difficult for the average person and therefore not very practical.

  • "Even kicking while swimming does not utilize the quadriceps as completely or intensely as running."

    I agree.

I still say that at similar intensities, the two activities burn similar amounts of calories.

why is intense swimming too difficult for the average person?

  • Because intense swimming quickly becomes anaerobic for those who aren't in shape.

  • in summary: calories burned from legs plus upper body in swimming equals calories burned from legs in running

The problem with all the calorie charts that say running burns more calories than swimming is that they assume that you are not swimming very hard. The chart will have several speed options for running, but usually only two for swimming, the faster one still not being very fast. When adjusted for effort level, the two activities are quite similar in terms of energy expenditure.

  • At the same effort level, over the same duration, running and swimming burn similar amounts of calories.

As you say, swimming does not use the leg muscles as much as running does. However, it uses all the muscles of the torso and upper body very intensely, whereas running does not use the upper body at all. These muscles are not as big as those of your legs, but they do make swimming an excellent exercise for burning calories.

  • This was one of the better videos b/c we're always told to work out and burn calories, but we're never told which ones give is more "bang for our buck and time" Thanks. Are there any aerobic classes you think are effective?

  • Since aerobic classes typically take place in a room they just don't allow you to move and utilize your legs completely therefore I'm not a big fan of aerobics if you are limited on time and want faster results.

  • Wait a minute, if I want to burn fat but maintain my muscle mass I am not goint to run a marathon. I have to do a light exercise, like the elliptical machine, for an hour exercising just enough to burn fat and not protein or carbs. However, I have been doing this for 3 weeks and I still have a gut! I will get back to you in another month.

  • I'll be here. By the way, exercising hard does not burn protein if you're eating enough carbs. And when you do cardio you're burning both fat and carbs.

  • Swimming is no good? I thought it was a great form of exercise....

  • It is good. It's just not the best fat burning exercise because it doesn't use the leg muscles through a full range of motion.

  • thanks!!!

  • they are more efficient than walking and just as efficient jogging

  • Thank you.

  • good video!

  • Swimming and skipping rope are very effective aerobic exercises. Both activities are rhythmical in nature and incorporate the entire body. Swimming has a large range of motion and jumping rope has ground force reaction. Any aerobic exercise that elevates heart rate shouldn't be compared to raising your heart rate by holding your breath. Aerobic exercise that elevates heart rate also increases O2 consumption promotes anaerobic glycolysis which does burn fat.

  • Work done burns calories. It's that simple.

How much you sweat and how high your heart rate gets are side effects of you doing work. That's why as you say, using your legs is so good at burning calories, it is easier for us to get a lot of work done using our legs than using other parts of our bodies.

    Thanks for all the info.

  • Thanks for the great vid, Steve. I do the elliptical and pretty hard biking when I can. I've tried to convince the wife that just a short walk will help, but in a very limited capacity.

  • You're absolutely right.

  • great video steve. i do the treadmil on a 10.0 incline for 3.5 mph for 30 mins 4-5 times a week.

  • Doesn't swimming properly utilize the entire body? I was always told that proper swimming technique requires you to kick your legs constantly. Is this not true? Do we assume we are using our whole legs but really aren't?

  • You really aren't. At least not like running or biking.

  • great video Steve. Will walking at a steady pace around 3.5-4mph give a good aerobic workout? Only reason I'm asking is I want to not jog as often due to wearing on my knees.

  • Same with me, except I have a bad back. Broke it in a motorcycle accident. Jogging hurts, but I walk about 3 hours a night at work.

  • Walking will give you an aerobic workout to a point. You body will adapt to that workout and then you'll have to do something a bit more strenous. But walking will always burn excess calories and fat.

  • Biking is great but most people do it at a leisurely pace.

  • Just because your heart is working doesn't mean your body is. That's why I gave the breath holding example.
