It's nice (but different) to see that he's decided to let his hair go dark(er). The "image" isn't really a thing, anymore... it's finally become about the music again. Heard a couple of tracks off the new MA- I liked em pretty well. David is more laid back in interviews these days, most young bands take themselves too seriously in interviews and when they get older they become more normal and easy-going. The bands I'm talking about are Immortal, Deicide, Bathory, Venom, Mayhem and Slayer.

I think aaoppe's point is Vincent have greater depth in himself in relation to his understanding and his view of life while Benton have to rely on images and reputation by doing idiotic things like burning his forehead with inverted cross or pretending to be possessed by demons. Here Vincent talks about deeper level of his subconsciousness and his dark inspiration where Benton talk about how "evil" he is.
I totally agree with you. You can basically compare lyrics written by Vincent and Benton, and it is so obvious Vincent's imagination and creativity have mythical and are atmospheric in relation to demonic contents while Benton's is blatantly "satanic" without any creativity in depth. You can tell that as unorthodox Vincent is, he doesn't feel the need to make himself look like one while Benton is really trying hard to earn his satanic image.
Vincent's darkside have that richness with intelligence and philosophy while Benton's darkside is simple profanity. And I think this distinction is related with the fact that Vincent have great musical background while Benton try to substitute his lack of musical creativity by relying on his overly satanic gimmick. I recalled late Chuck Schuldiner once said that some Death Metal bands are trying hard to "out-satanize each others" and I think Glen Benton really fit into this case.

Last time I was in Tampa the two genres were interlinked and pretty much inseprable (even if the music didn't always reflect it). There was a common bond. But your attitude reminds me of what really helped ruin metal in the early 90's: the "us verses them" nonsence between thrash and glam. We didn't stand together then and we don't even now. It doesn't matter what you listen to as long as you're a cool person, but I can't see serious death metal musicians incorporating techno into their songwriting--it just isn't death metal anymore, and I want to listen to Morbid Angel because they are a death metal band. Death metal is a musicians' genre, whereas techno lacks this quality.

I've only talked to Glen Benton once, but he was very down to earth and there was mutual respect---at least from what I experienced. All the talk about "he should have killed himself/he's possessed" crap . . . I say that the people that hang on to that should get over it and move on. Glen did.

Last time I was in Tampa the two genres were interlinked and pretty much inseprable (even if the music didn't always reflect it). There was a common bond. But your attitude reminds me of what really helped ruin metal in the early 90's: the "us verses them" nonsence between thrash and glam. We didn't stand together then and we don't even now. It is better though. I'm not being combative with ya, just an observation. Peace.

Right, I did not choose my words properly. I meant to stress musical direction, not the actual people. It doesn't matter what you listen to as long as you're a cool person, but I can't see serious death metal musicians incorporating techno into their songwriting--it just isn't death metal anymore, and I want to listen to Morbid Angel because they are a death metal band. Death metal is a musicians' genre, whereas techno lacks this quality.
