I've just played this game on my SNES emulator and I beat it on all 3 difficulty modes. I've lost too many lives while I was playing! Due to that, I had to use an infinite lives and bombs cheat codes (Except the overhead levels where I weirdly lose all lives when I die once with the infinite lives code there, so I used the infinite bombs code there only) in order to beat it. And I played this on a USB game controller.
