  • Thank you very much!

  • Great video with a good explanation, thank you.

  • Very Interesting.

  • Excellent video. Would like to watch the surgery.

  • Just had my dogs knee done on Thursday, she is recovering (long process). We tried to avoid surgery even with laser treatments for 5 weeks, but she fell back onto the knee when she was just standing.try to avoid the surgery at all costs didnt work for her :( We live in NY it cost us 6,000! with one follow up visit. I have to have new xrays taken in 3-4 months which will cost I am sure up into the 100's.its a shame that when something happens they really take you to the bank . . . :(

  • hi im really concerned i have 2 rottie pups who are six months of age they are brothers. The question is how can a six month old pup have a cruciate left ligament tear and just a week after his brother has the same thing? please help is it due to bad breeding or just unlucky?

  • Google ACL injury in dogs before put your you jump on the vet's operating table. Surgery is often presented as the only option because it is a cash cow. Simply doing nothing will stabilize the joint and doing nothing for at least 8 weeks is highly recommended.

  • As the owner of a rescued dog who had 2 ruptured ACLs, I can tell you that doing nothing does NOT fix a dog's knees. It is true that the pain may be worse at some times than it is at other times, which may cause a decrease or disappearance in symptoms temporarily but it ALWAYS returns. Telling people not to fix their dog's knees if they can afford to fix them is not the best advice. Ask any human who had a torn ACL repaired about the extreme pain before surgery.

  • @Litarider: Humans would have much pain while they healed if they had 3 other legs to stand on. Yes, doing nothing will not "fix" the ACL injury but the tissue surrounding the joint hardens to support the knee over 8 + weeks. The limp also keeps the dog from injuring or reinjuring legs. Different maybe if you have a very young dog, mine's 13 y.o. Just telling you that vet surgeons will always recommend surgery - and that''s B.S.

  • Anybody who has gone through this with there dog can you tell me. Our labrador has it and they told us before she can be operated on she needs to lose weight which she has but not enough yet. Shes been doing hydrotherapy and its been working however just today after she went my father dropped her when he took her out the van and she landed on the bad leg and now she cant walk again all that hard work down the drain is there a chance she hasn't done more damage

  • like if u were searching rupture! (avivii)

  • I was told 3000.00-4000.00 dollars

  • Thank you for this video,my dog also will be having the same surgery :(

  • Our dog is looking to have this surgery, for 1 knee to be done is nearly £3,500! Ouch!!

  • How much was the surgeries? Please share!

  • hi my pups surgery is costing around 2200 thats only using fishing line not the metal plate, the metal plate is 3500 and i have two pups who are going under the knife :-(

  • @e1g3r The price depends on where you are located and the number of qualified surgeons in your area. My dog had his first ACL done in the Philadelphia, PA area. It cost us about $3000 (no follow up included). We had higher and lower estimates for the surgery. We are now in California in the East Bay Area and our dog is having his second TPLO today. We will pay around $5000 for the surgery (1 follow up visit included). Shop around and ask a lot of questions.

  • This video was great and very well done. Thanks

  • Great, thanks for sharing, my Rottweiler just had the op and all is well !

  • this was a terrific video showing and explaining how the cruciate ligament is connected to the knee. The demo really does show it very simply for those of us who are not veterinarians! My 5 yr old Australian Healer/Beagle mix just tore hers and will be having surgery this week. When the Vet explains it you really can't get a clear picture of what it is all about. this video lets you see it pretty clearly. Thanks!

  • Thank you so much for doing this. My West Highland is going in for an operation to repair her cruciate ligament tomorrow and although the vet did explain, it was hard to concentrate on what he was saying at the time as i was so worried about her. Thanks again.

  • my beagle did that when we left her out all night. We thought she got stuck in dirt digging herself loose she did that. But we don,t know.We had it repaired.

  • My dog was chasing me when I used the fourwheeler to bring garbage down to the driveway, got down there and she was limping pretty bad and she still is today, I was hoping it was just a sprain but it doesn't seem to have gotten any better.

  • Technically, that joint is formed by 4 bones not 3, you omitted the fibula (I know it's not important in this video, but mention is for correctness sake).

Otherwise very good video! I subscribed!

  • anybody know anything good or bad about the a-tract knee brace for dogs?

  • my boxer puppy had surgery 2 months ago for this and he was fine until this morning he started limping worse than he had before the surgery. I plan to take him into the vet tomorrow because today is easter and it is closed but do you know what i can do so he doesnt get worse!! help

  • thank you, the vet thinks that my dog may have ccl (taking her to a orthopedic surgeon next week for evaluation) and your video really helped me understand what it is a lot better.

  • Fantastic. Really helpful and educational. Explains the condition so thoroughly and in a way which non-medics can understand. thank you - please keep posting them

  • hi

    my mames is Andreea

    i am from Rumain

i need more informations from DOG CRUCIATE LIGAMENT because i studi from licente

plees i needs help from my licente

  • My lab mix has his right hind legs ACL partialy torn, we were thinking about surgery ,but the vet said that normally within a year the other one will go out too. We don't have the money so we might have to put him down:'( It is sad because he is the nicest dog I have ever had, he is super good with everybody and curls up around babies and licks them, its really cute. Sorry for the spelling mistakes (I'm only 14 so I'm not the best speller.)

  • Our chocolate lab has a hind left ruptured acl and we are now waiting to book for surgery! This video helps make sense of it!

  • Really helpful thank you - I have a four year old Irish Wolfhound (38kg) with what I now think is an either pulled or ruptured cruciate ligament....off to the Vet's today!

  • Great video. Thanks for posting for all the dog owners. This will help with talking to vets when considering where to have the surgery.

  • Hi,

Our dog (9 years, 12kg) has been diagnosed with a partial cruciate ligament rupture, and 3 out of 4 of the opinions we have sought recommend surgery. However, our vet feels that the joint has stabilised sufficiently in the eight weeks post injury, and does not recomment surgery.

My concern is whether there is a greater likelihood of arthritis in later life if we don't opt for surgery, and how we would prevent a relapse/additional injury.

    Also, what is Conservative Management?

    Thanks!

  • This video was GREAT! I have a 20lb. Corgi who ruptured her ACL and although my vet was great at verbally explaining the injury, I got so much more out of this video! Just the visuals of how the ACL/PCL work really helped me understand the mechanics of where the injury is. Had surgery 2 days ago which was a modified TPLO.

  • this happened to my dog yesterday - going for surgery tomorrow :-( hopefully he'll make a full recovery

  • This might have happened to my dog. My dog was limping one day, and we couldn't find a reason. I checked for splinters, cracked pads, and everything. My mom went to the vet for a free check up. They said that this is probably what happened. My dog isn't really using the leg very much. We are taking him to the vet for x-rays. We had to wait a week because my mom needed the money. Thanks for this video; it really helped me. I hope my beagle, Chevy, will be alright.

  • Thanks, this was very helpful. Our baby blew out her knee this morning and I have been researching while she is in evaluation at the vet. She is 90lb Black Lab/Retriever Mix - may be other large dog breeds in there as well. She has been in treatment for about a month for lameness/limp at get-up and then she was fine, but this morning it went out completely, chasing after a squirrel. Damn squirrels!!

  • crap

this is definitely what my 8month old lab is doing

how much is this gonna cost me?

    wiped out chasing a ball.....

  • @garnetfordsucks

depends on where you live I think,it cost me about a 1000 euro's and to the question does it heal on its own,no it wont, it will improve in time but it will never be as it was.

  • @garnetfordsucks You have probably got him fixed, but if you had the surgery, it costs a few thousand dollars.

  • @garnetfordsucks same thing i have an 8 month old chihuahua and that happened to him :(

  • Having this Surgery done on my 105 lb Lab this week at a specialist's office in Athens Ga. They expect a full recovery in 6 months. The surgery runs about 3k. The more conservative and cheaper suture surgery really is only rated to 100 pounds so we are having the tibia leveling surgery done.

  • My dog is showing the exact same signs as the Chocolate Labrador at the start! He's eating well, drinking well, even cleaning himself. It not sore to touch, and he can even bend it. His leg starts spasming sometimes, which is scary. Could anybody tell me why it does?

  • @ierocake

My grandma had a ruptured cruciate ligament and she 'ignored' it for 3 months untill she went to the docter. She said that some days it hurt alot and others it was fine. Maybe it's the same with your dog.

Anyway, I would go to the vet if I were you. maybe it's something diffrent, maybe it's a sore muscle or another ligament or something...

  • Is it possible for a ruptured cruciate ligament to heal itself without surgery

  • Partial - yes

    Full - no

  • It's a great video, thank you

  • My dog Max (husky/shepherd x) has just been diagnosed with this condition =(

So its off to surgery soon. $3200 approx here in new zealand.

Interesting to read other people experiences and comments on this topic. Excellent video vetstoria.

  • My Siberian Husky was operated on in August of 07 for a TPLO. She has been great since that time. Two days ago she started yelping with pain from that leg. It lasted about 20 seconds and then subsided. It recurred 3 or 4 times a day even during the night. My vet told us to give her Baby aspirin a couple of times a day and make an appointment with the Dr. who did the surgery. We have an appointment with him on Thursday May 5th. Will update you after that appointment.

  • My dog tore her ACL today. I'm dreading this surgery and the recovery time but I can't stand to see her limp. Anyone have experience with this?

  • Our boxer just got home from her TTA surgery yesterday. She tore her ACL months ago and just now we are treating it Yes it was expensive about $4,000 but worth it. Now the hard part will be the long recovery. 6-12 week lease only and probably 4 mons untill she can play with her friends again, If I let her!! The recovery is supposedly excellent but we shall see. Good luck

  • I actually opted for conservative management of the injury. She is now back to full weight bearing on the affected knee and can run almost as fast as before. I still restrict her from jumping and climbing stairs.

  • Hi, what was your conservative management?

My old dog has a heart condition [as well] and its unsafe to put him under general anaesthetic.

  • Restricted activity which means no long walks, stairs, curbs, etc. Cutting down on snacks to maintain healthy weight. Glucosomine and Chondroitin supplements for joint health. Lastly, lots of massage for the affected leg. Hope that helps. It does take time to heal. Wish you the best of luck.

  • OMGoodness, this is BRILLIANT to have this video on youtube! Thankyou so very much!!!

Hope your 2 lovely patients are fine now.

  • My dog has been lame on his right back leg for three weeks but so expensive for xrays and surgury. Do you know about how much a cruciate surgury is?

  • we have just had our dog operated on (yesterday) and it was about £800! He will also need aftercare which we have not yet paid for. The vet has suggested aquatherapy.

  • Thanks my dog jake (Rotweiller) had started walking funny one day we theb realised it had this crclate thingy and then its in vet now :)

  • All of your videos are great! Very informative. Thanks for educating me on various subjects! Keep adding more!
