How do the glasses change like that? They are like reactive photometers? Some kind of metallic?

They are photo-chromatic actually.

There are tiny particle sized clear micro-beads within the lenses that react to UV light and hence darken. It is quick to change (10-15 seconds), and then it takes about 5 mins for them to clear totally.

The newer lenses are faster and are a lot darker.
