The econo nazis won't be happy until the beaches are all closed and they can sit in the dunes smoking their pot in their communes. Right now our forefathers are rolling in their graves seeing Americans take freedom from other Americans over some bird that likes to crap on the beach.
Well technically people from Virginia fought on both sides during the Civil War, so they run a 50% chance of being Yankees. These guys were all local though, nobody from up north goes to the OBX during January looking drum, they're too busy shoveling snow, cussing each other, throwing trash all over the place, and going to "We Love Obama" rallies.
Clearly these are all local NC boys. If they were Yankees, they'd be casting over each other, cussing each other, and throwing trash all over the beach.
I don't suppose you call those people from Virginia Yankees? You know the one's that come down with the monster truck all jacked up running the rebel flag, blazing along with the loud mufflers, ripping up whatever they can, leaving piles of sharks or skates they caught to die on the beach?
Typical us vs. them mentality. Rec. vs. Comm.????? Really? Where are your stats and sources? Not all Rec. fisherman are the same, just like not all comm. fisherman are the same. There has to be regulation to a certain degree in both areas.
After years/decades of fishing from Texas to Cape Cod and following the evolution of all state departments of natural resources/scientific research it is obvious that the term 'cycle' was invented for biologists who have no other answer.
I was able to get down to this blitz before the wind picked up, I had a hell of a time, I even passed the inspection of the law man when I got to the truck. However, several were not as lucky. Has anyone ever done a study of heavy snow fall/blizared (like va had this year) to fish catches close to shore, time of year ect. And the 3mile line, haha, I think it is a good example of people coming together and working together to fight control over all of us....
@fishmilitia "The drum are the strongest they ever have been" -- this is a pretty strong statement. I think before the arrival of northern Europeans to the Americas Drum were more populous. I think we need better data to see a larger context of what is happening with the fishing population.
If anything restrictions on the beach usage and creel limit will do nothing but improve fishing. Why the hell would you argue against that?
These fish of this cllass has not been seen by the 80 year old natives that I've spoken with..so they are the strongest they have been in sometime. I'll make sure to compare that with the next person I meet from the 18th century. Does no goo for any angler if the stocks are good, but your access is denied.and The Inspector General just declared a gross mismanagement of NOAA and DMF..Hard to collect data, when over 80% of your people are enforcement and not scienctist..
I really don't mind seeing restrictions placed on any particular fish or method of taking them. It definatly will not hurt the fish to do so. Yes there are some stupid regulations but I really can't think of any that hurt our fishery. Too many people only think of their own self interest instead of what is best for the fishery as a whole. RIGHT NOW we are experience many many people "POACHING" over the 3 mile line for stripers. C&R n illegal waters is still POACHIN! MmM Pups R some goodeats
The commentary is of a man that lives here and is venting over our constant mismanagement of both fisheries and access. I am sure on a normal day that this person would agree there is evidence of over fishing. However, we have had our scallop season taken away from us and our commercial fishing may be getting ready to loose their gill nets. The gill net loss is being promoted as a savoir for the lack of specks and puppy drum..Neither species has been affected by the gill nets..
The drum are the strongest they ever have been and we have been burning them in record numbers for months. The specks are good, or at least they were until the freeze, when a great deal of them died in the sound, but that will be blamed on the comms also. AND FOR THE RECORD..more puppy drum died at the hand of the recs from Sept until now during this unprecented season, then all the comm fishing put together for the past year..
who mentioned comms vs. recs in this discussion? I'm well aware of what happened to cod or I wouldn't have brought it up. Point was simply that man, regardless of comms or recs, can most certainly be responsible for depletion of a species.
Don't get me wrong, in my own observations I believe the bag on drum can be raised, but at least partially because of the efforts of DMF in restoring the stocks. They at least shouldn't be being bashed over a pup blitz, as the guy in this vid did.
Actually you brought it into the dialogue by using an classic example that was in fact a result of over fishing by commercial fishermen. I am sorry but I find it really difficult to believe that you could possibly line the beaches with enough sport fishermen to deplete a species. What actually has DMF actually done to increase the numbers of drum? What are the commercial limits? I have seen commercial fishermen net an entire school of fish while I was standing on the beach with my one fish.
What have they done to increase number? They restricted the catch! No, I can't sit here and tell you beyond a shadow of a doubt that it was exactly the DMF's restrictions that led to the increased numbers we're seeing today, but it's a hell of a coincidence.
I still don't understand where you think my dialogue is directly solely on recs here. In general, I think drum were overfished in the past(by all parties) , and now the current restrictions have led to recovery. Thats it in a nutshell.
To clarify, I was speaking of the overfishing of the red drum in general over the last 30 years, not in that particular session. But for the record, I did hear that there was rampant poaching going on last week.
Yes, there was a great deal of poaching going on..I am not going after you, but there seems to be a standard of where the comms kill them rampantly or break the law when it comes to the drum, but the truth is if one looks at the #s then they will see that the recs kill 3-4 times more drum the comms come close too..
So is it just inconceivable to the first gentleman that a species can be overfished? Just can't happen? Go ask the cod fishermen up north about "cycles". Educate yourself before you speak, please.
You may want to educate yourself......... Cod , as is the case with most other species, were over fished by "commercial" fishermen and not "sport fishermen"!! How ridiculous is it that a sport fisherman can only take one fish a day yet watch a so-called "commercial fisherman" run into a school and scarp up the whole school?

Conservation is not fun. But it needs to be done because some jackass is always taking more than he should be. You know it.

There is major difference between conservation and dictatorship.

You can only keep 1 fish 18"-27" a day, & most are released anyway, so educate your own self before you speak, please.
