I think your explanation is easy to understand,-BUT- as a one time senior-school teacher may I offer the following comments.
I. Take some speech training lessons. These would help make your lesson flow more easily.
2.Plan your lesson in concise steps so that you do not jump back to previously explained points; if you wish at then end of the lesson revisit certain points.
I'm about ready to officially declare you an angel for posting this. I've never been good with reading rhythm--I always learned that by ear--and I was about ready to throw my piano stool out the window before I found this. Thank you so much!
as a drum teacher it is interesting to see how other instrumentalists teach rhythm. i would recommend refining the way you demonstrate 3 against 4 as it did not seem very clear. i recommend using three quarter notes to represent the three side, and four dotted eighths to represent the four side. if you then subdivide them both into sixteenth notes it is very easy and clear to see where and how they line up. composite rhythms are also a great tool. hope this helps! keep up the good work!
I'm playing a Chopin piece (Nocturne in C sharp minor) and it has parts with 4 eighth notes on the left hand and a 35thlet on the right hand. xD That is, I have to play 35 right hand notes in the same amount of time as the 4 eighth notes. xD Fun.
Thank you very much for this. I got this problem while starting with the arabesque. The two hands for their own aren't the problem but puttin them together is not only DIF I CULT ^^ but more like a pain in the ass -.-
Been trying to do these in a piece of music I'm trying to learn to play, but failed... took some searching to find this as I didn't know the proper term for it, but with these tips and tricks I think it will be easier ^_^
you're teachin' well at any way, you're funny and have a generous style, heh-heh... (sorry the bad english, i'm from brazil.) thx u, i think i learned a little about it, despite the obstacle of languages.
I'd abandoned Arabesque for a while because those 'polyrhythms'... but this helps a lot. It'll be a slow-progress, but doesn't seem quite as impossible now.
Hi. Great video, but I'm still struggling a bit. I'm working on First Arabesque, but when I get to the decending part (with the polyrhythm stuff) I can play it, but I pause after every two notes of the triplets. It's quite frustrating because the free-flowing sound I'm trying to achieve does not come through. Any ideas?
use the metronome and go SLOWLY for about a week, then go faster with the metronome still, then take off the metronome, then you should be free to do what you want :)
First time that I see a more favorited video than rated... I print this screen.
For your lesson, I prefer understand deeply the rythm than use tricks. If you use tricks, you have to know one trick for one type of rythm. Without the basic technique to understand, you can't progress without teachers. That makes "knowers" higher than "ignorant". The basic technique of my ignorant status is :
listen to the nature and analyse. For this exercise, try to do one note with left hand while three with the right VERY SLOWLY. When it's mechanical and that you don't have to think of your right hand move, try to just had a note or double the rythm (as it sounds easier for you) with your left hand. And then increase the rythm. While doing this exercise, you have to think of one think, then one other etc...
And finally you done it. It's the same for all things on earth. With this basic technique, I can now play Chopin, op.10 n°12 (Revolutionnary Etude) after one year of piano practice... without a teacher. Believe in you and listen the life, only truth matters, a teacher can only teach you "tricks" but the job, only one person can do it... You.
thanks alot for this lesson! been trying to learn Chopin's Fantasie Impromptu and I wasn't sure how to deal with the polyrhythms in it. The are so difficult especially at full speed. Slowly putting it together now.
That's awesome. It took me hours to learn that first polyrhythm, and then I saw how easy it was when you did it. You broke it down into a very simple method. Same with the second one. Well done!
hey man, you know, i'd love to teach guitar if i actually knew how to play it, but i don't think i'm qualified to teach on guitar, sorry man :( i hope you're not to disappointed in me
Wow, that was fast... thank you so much!!! I've always wanted to learn Fantasie-Impromptu, but yeah it's full of polyrhythm and I suck at it, so hopefully this will help me! :)
yea it's hair under my chin? but i've ALWAYS had it!...well not ALWAYS...like i wasn't born with a hairy chin or anything, but i've had that chin piece going on since before i started making the videos! took you 20 lessons to notice? shows how observant you are!

My piano teacher taught me the same "not difficult" trick. I used it to play the song "Notturno" by Edvard Grieg.

My problem with these has been that when I play polyrhythmic stuff faster or in smaller notemeasures, it starts to sound very sloppy
mot5 3 years ago
It just takes more practise to get it right :) it's harder to do a polyrhthem at slow speed actually.

i like that it's hard to co-ordinate but something good to practice.thanks :)

If you want a really good example of 3vs4, check out The National - Fake Empire.
