those are cute whippets :3 I once tried to put a sock on one of my whippets (those noses just look like right to pull something over it XD) but he bit into it instead and killed the sock :D he does that with pillows, too. Darn, I miss my whippets ;_; Moving out for Uni does not only come with positive aspects.
To anyone who doubt these dogs are having the time of their life: Whippets are in fact VERY intelligent. Actually, Whippets would outsmart the lot of you.
Point being: if they were to NOT like this activity, they would have NO PROBLEM at all removing these socks from their head. Honestly.
Ah, my whippet lurcher Sudo would *love* to do this, he lacks a little buddy to stand up and wave his arms at though!!! He also goes crazy when you blow a kerfuffle on his tummy. Aaaaw!!
Whippets love to be covered. Ours buries her head into just about anything, her own legs, our covers, under my arm, it's just how they are. I can throw a few blankets on her and she just chills out sleeping. A lot of other dogs this would be a bad idea, but with Whippets, they are just different.
@LucidPhil They sure do, In fact if they didn't like it they would be trying to remove the socks off with their paws, not run around like its play time.
My Whippet loves putting his head inside things and takes no fear from having his head covered over with a blanket. In fact if he wants to sleep and there's a light on in the room he will deliberately put his head under something to block the light out.
If you're not a Whippet owner you really don't get it(nor the dog).
This is the hardest I have laughed at a youtube video in a while! Makes me want to get my whippet Bob a sibling so BAD!!! Thanks for sharing and nevermind the naysayers. They need to get a clue. ;o)
I also have a scientific background (behavioural psycology, Skinner boxes, the works) and your skepticism got me thinking so I did a small experiment:
I sat on the bed with a sock pulled open in my hands. I was passive, didn't call the dogs over, just sat there. Devo came to me, tail wagging, looked at me, looked at the sock and, without my encouragement thrust his head into the sock. He instigated the game himself, he must enjoy it.
Its hard to believe that someone who owns dogs can't tell when they are having fun. Dogs are social animals, co-evolved with humans for at least 12,000 years and are highly adept at getting their feelings and wishes understood by their host. It's the play behaviour thats the giveaway, the tail wagging, the frontal crouch, the play fighting & growling.
That and the way they come and nudge me when I'm putting my socks on. Give me some credit please, and them.

My only fear is that a whippet moves fast and might move into a wall or other object and hurt itself. I have a whippet myself. He's adorable and named Watson:o)
Anybody who can´t see that these two whippets are having the time of their life obviously never owned a dog let alone a whippet. They are very clever and they have a great sense of humour.
I just found this video!! It's great, whippets are sooooooooo cool. Can't wait til my husband gets home so I can show him this. Have to try it with my two whippet boys!!! Thanks for the idea, your dogs are beautiful <3
Great video excellent editing lot fun to watch! It put smile on my face. Honestly I do hope you continue to play this game with them. They obviously are having a wonderful time and can see perfectly well through the sock. They are really beautiful dogs. I am betting they are real sweethearts. Don't worry about the stupid people. As Ron White says, "Can't fix stupid!"
This is hysterical. And I thought I was the only one who put socks on my Whippet heads! And for the "critics" who think it's mean, they obviously don't know Whippets. This is not a breed that tolerates unwanted behavior. See any tucked tails? No. These pampered Whippets are clearly enjoying the game.
Kudos to you for not only cutting together this vid in the most hilarious way possible, but for finding something that keeps them entertained so well. XD
And to all the naysayers, come on people, they're socks, not plastic bags. I supposed when a dog wraps up in sheets to go to sleep that's cruel too? Lighten up. If they didn't want those socks on their heads, I doubt they would have stuck around for it. Those legs aren't just for show. ;)
Anyway, great vid. Put a huge smile on my face. :)
my whippet has copped the sock over the head a few times - bloody hilarious! :D
And y'know what? As a vet nurse, I have seen my fair share of animal cruelty, and I'm telling you people, a sock on the head for a minute or so is harmless. ....and these two clearly love the game of it!!!
Thanks for the sane response. Yes, they clearly love it and I only do it rarely, when they ask me to, and then only for a minute at a time. I'm sure the people that don't like it are well-meaning, even if their thinking is a bit black-and-white and wowserish. These dogs are pampered, not abused.
Poor dogs. Makes me wonder how someone would come up with this idea.. i mean were you just sitting there putting your socks on and thought hmm maybe i should put my socks over my dogs head.. i mean thats just retarded and well.. mean.
I was putting my sock on sitting on the bed. The dogs were jumping all over the bed, and me, anticipating a walk. They were play-fighting with each other and me. I was laughing so much they overwhelmed me and, lying back on the bed trying to "defend" myself with sock in hand I randomly slipped it over Devo's head. He set about head-butting Vespa and the play fighting got even more rambunctious.
I've done it with my dogs too. When their head goes down and their butt goes up, they're having fun. A few minutes doesn't hurt them. Ever played pin the tail on the donkey. Did it hurt you?
The people who were made uncomfortable by this - anyone who has a whippet can tell these guys are having a ball. It's only toward the end that they are trying to get the socks off. The rest is play.
You can tell they love it, by the characteristic whippetty play rolling and pouncing! What a lovely fun pair. They raced straight up to you when they saw those socks in your hands!
made me very uncomfortable. how could they even see? just looked to me like they were trying to get the socks off. im sure you found it more amusing than they did. why dont you just put the sock over your own head.
I hear your concern and believe me, if I thought this was anything but fun for the dogs I wouldn't do it. But I cant sit down on the bed to put my socks on without them running up and nosing my hands until I slip the socks over their heads. As far as I understand "dog" they are asking me to do it. Then they play fight and growl at each other and its hilarious. These animals are smart and they like novelty like we do. They prefer it to being bored.
Brilliant! Must try this with our Whippet - it looks a lot of fun!Incidentally - are two Whippets twice as much work? Just considering another one, but we're not sure.
The dogs seem to enjoy it. They actually "ask" for it when I sit down to put my socks on. The fun is in the play-fight they have with socks on. Twice as much work? No, 2 are a little less work than one as they entertain and excersise each other. I cant imagine a single whippet enjoying having a sock on its head though, you would have to make a game of it.
for some reason, i find this amusing. can't wait to get me a whippet.

Oh wow, I actually used to play a similar game with one of my friends. XD We'd put pants on our heads and try to rough house.
Plus, this seems like an interesting way to see how sighthounds cope without sight.
Also, Devo and Vespa are awesome names for Whippets. ESPECIALLY Devo. X3

This has to be one of the funniest clips I´ve seen :)
We have a Whippet/Salukimix and I think she would fit right in with your ninjacrew :)
And like someone commented earlier, if they didn´t like it, they could easily get the sock off.
And I think it´s pretty obvious that they like it and that it seems like they can see through the sock.
This clip absolutely made my day :)
