Good example of a very successful Socialist nation was Norway after the war which adobted a Socialist modelled Mixed economy where state owned all the important resources while the public could own their own company which was less important such as clothes shop, food stores or telecompany. USSR was a Dictatorship Socialist nation with a more state controlled Socialist economy.
The differences between Conservatism and Socialism are Conservatives choose to use the gift of reason to thrive, and prosper. Socialists believe it is far better to abdicate reason to a massive government that temporarily provides the basic needs at the expense of the few remaining people who are able to produce.

If you look at prosperous countries like Norway, Sweden, Denmark, they pay about 50% tax which allows them a much better life than here in the States where taxes are too low and allows for "greed" to manifest itself.

@tbeoe Get your facts straight. He did not order the taking down of anything. The panels were removed when the White House roof was being repaired, partially due to damage from those exact panels. He chose not to put them back up due to the cost involved in doing so.

@tedster911 The panels on average saved the tax payers $2,500 a year. The original installation in 1979 cost $28,000. Lets assume half of that was the panels, the other half the installation. That is $14,000 . That would take 5.6 years before the panels repaid their reinstallation cost.

The shortage of food was because unlike America which imports most of it's food, USSR produces it's own food most of the time. USSR didn't import like USA did, increase in population

He was a state capitalist who declared war on the middle class and low income workers, and expanded the federal government and the national debt. I guarantee the one BIGGEST contributor to the collapse of 2007-2008 was the repeal of the Glass-Steagall act, in 1999. The lack of prosecution of large banks that dealt in mortgage-backed securities also contributed to the developing crisis.

Good example of a very successful Socialist nation was Norway after the war which adobted a Socialist modelled Mixed economy where state owned all the important resources while the public could own their own company which was less important such as clothes shop, food stores or telecompany. USSR was a Dictatorship Socialist nation with a more state controlled Socialist economy.

If you look at prosperous countries like Norway, Sweden, Denmark, they pay about 50% tax which allows them a much better life than here in the States where taxes are too low and allows for "greed" to manifest itself.

Low income families and other Idiots really love their catchphrases, they are really popular amongst republican voters.
But think about it, most of the comments here are inconsistent phrases with BIG words the authors obviously knew very little about, like Socialism or what socialized healthcare is.

@Ulrna - there is no difference between socialism and dictatorship, because of the nature of man. When you require Peter to sacrifice for the sake of Paul, to surrender the fruits of his superior intellect, superior industry, the only way you can get him to do it is by force. By dictate. Because if Peter has a lick of sense (which he must if he has more than Paul), he won't volunteer to become Paul's servant.

Greed is not a virtue, and it is not a civilized trait to exhibit.
Societies have historically been built by cooperation, and not by separation of the community, when the feudal societies fell, the definition of decency and honour seems to have faded away as well.

Greed IS a virtue.
Societies have been built on trade; people had incentive to cooperate because the individual profited from that cooperation. This is known as "greed".
You must not understand feudalism, if you think it defined decency and honor.

Trade and greed are different things, I don't think you understand that money and power once were separate and the ascension to power closed.
In the feudal community the local regent was reliant on his subjects efficiency, on the international "free-market" a mogul is not reliant on local efficiency. After all, he can basically hire anywhere in the world.

@Ulrna - Yes, I would say they are more selfless than us, absolutely. There's nothing noble in that, however. Google "Ubuntu definition". You'll find the origin of the word in Africa, not America. Their "selflessness", as you put it, is nothing but a disregard for the individual.
Ethiopia and Somalia's problems are caused by tribalism and this disdain for the individual, not capitalism.

@Hiraghm Selflessness and Charity is more common in western literature than in what little I know of African culture, at least historically.
Most of the gallant and noble deeds found in commonwealth and European literature depicts some type of selfless act in accordance with biblical Semitic tradition.
This has been a recurring phenomenon in European literature for over 1000 years.
But Augustine of Hippo was of course influential in the early Church’s moral-philosophy.

Others can either do business with you, or your competitors. You can't get more fair than that.

For the vast majority of americans, the only future is massive debt and wage slavery. While you and I can probably agree that pure communism is a terrible mistake, and lends itself to one-party totalitarian rule, only a fool or a blind man would trust in pure capitalism. A market dominated by greed, and ruled by the rich to the exclusion of all others, cannot ever be fair unless it is regulated.

There is such a thing as a regulated but free market, where laws exist to protect the consumer, and to protect small business from the depredations of monstrous corporations, and to protect the market as a whole from the unscrupulous activities of speculative investment criminals. A lack of market regulation makes about as much sense as a lack of traffic laws.

Regulation is not the same as traffic laws. For one thing, traffic laws are the same for everyone; regulations are not. Traffic laws are enacted by local municipalities and originate in city councils; regulations are enacted by members of the executive branch without oversight by the legislative branch (beyond funding) of the *federal* gov't.

And regulations don't exist, and shouldn't exist, to protect anyone from anyone; they should exist to "make regular". LAWS which are enacted to protect people, are enacted by elected representatives of the people affected. Regulation is not, nor should it be, law, or carry the weight of law.

In Sweden we have socialism and we have more freedom then you. You don’t see many homeless on the street. 5 weeks paid vacation. You don’t get broke if you get cancer or any other disease. In my opinion you are the slaves under capitalism and it is blurring your vision, while I don’t have to endure sleepless night and worrying about what’s going to happen if I or my children get sick, lose my job, etc. Btw you know how many ppl I know that have 2 jobs?
