  • Fundamentals of running form can make a dramatic difference in pr finish. Because I've tweeked my form from 2009's ING Miami Marathon (4:42:32) to 2010s Miami Marathon (3:45:24) and this year's New York City Marathon (3:07:23). In addition to form, leg workout routines played a major factor, but form follows function. Keep up the good work with the vids and turn up the mic.

  • Hu? Speak into the microphone please!!!

  • please speak louder or get a better mike, all I hear is mumbling

  • @myschwettyballs Yeah, and it looks as if a camera was used to record the video from a TV screen. Amateur hour!

  • Meanwhile Radcliffe in her last marathon konked out because of knee problems. hahahaha. Over analysis.

  • wow .. this analysis really shows all three different types of foot strike ! Paula being fore foot strike, Petrova being a Heel strike and Goucher Mid strike, Wow . . . so this shows that no matter what strike you are, as long you are comfortable you should be alright !

  • no if you paid attention at all in these videos, youd know that is not what the video maker is trying to get across.

Radcliffe is demonstrating the correct form, you heel strike and you will end up with injuries. pay attention next time.

  • Thanks jack, I know that gait analysis is to flag runners that heel strike will cause injury and slow us down, but I was trying to say that even professional runners have different type of running style

I am a Mid-foot strike myself, trying to change from my previous heel strike.

  • LOUDER!!!

  • Dr. Silberman, thanks for this great video. At some point do you think you could also post a similar sort of video analysis comparing some of the top men's runners; e.g., Wanjiru, Ryan Hall, Merga, etc. (maybe from the Olympic marathon?)

  • This is correct. I videoed my 2 and 4 year old running. They have perfect forefoot strike running technique, exactly like Paula (not as quick obviously).

  • so you should be pushing off with the back foot, not reaching with the front foot?

  • @burninforyou ohhh

  • These videos are fantastic! Keep them coming. Maybe just maybe the shoe industry will come around and stop padding the heels of their shoes so much. I was a heavy heel striker for years and ran sub 3 hour marathons, but was always sore and injured. Paula's form is the form I've been working towards in Newton shoes and I am not injured anymore - and I am never sore. Good stuff.

  • I have many running friends but only a few are open minded enough to consider anything other than the propaganda from shoes companies and the media. I'll forward this video to them. Thanks so much for this. Although barefoot running was not mentioned, the video helped me clarify the its role. I bet Radcliffe wears a really minimalist shoe and may even do some barefoot running in training. I hope we can see a lot more of this type of video.

  • Brilliant analysis, thanks for posting

  • its crazy, because humans are the worst "energy conserving" runners. We only go forward as fast as how fast we push backwards- wasting energy. Plus bringing forward the leg we just threw back-wasting/slowing us down. Even kangaroos/dogs move faster, but our brains move us farther.

  • This is so brilliant! at first I saw nothing, but then I learned from you. It's true that there are flaws in the 2 back runners, but every runner is different- but then again I am amazed at how they can even keep up with 1st runner with their running form. If you're behind another runner, you do try to same more energy then leading runner, in hopes to successfully follow or pass the leader.

  • I'm amazed they can keep up too. Thanks for the comments.
