This sounds just as fresh as it did way back then. Awesome band.

  • AWESOME THEN. AWESOME NOW.

  • No other bass player approaches Burnel .......none

  • so this is what Sniper did before he joined Team Fortress...

  • Why can't we embed it? Does EMI not want to sell any more music?

  • Marisa Dal Santo!!

  • 4 top blokes have 2 listen 2 this everyday!!!!!!!!

  • 'Stranger from another planet, welcome to our hole.

Just strap on your geeetar and we'll play some rock and roll'

    I just love these l;yrics.

  • This sounds like the original recording like on the record. I was totally Rattus Norvigicus that time, i was like 14 with that Rattus button and just escaped from disco. We were real punks and i don't mean our looks.

  • Personally,

This is just like a party on my boat.

    Superb.

    The group!

    Not the boat.....

  • Thanks for uploading...The Stranglers are Number 1!!! Hope to see them again nx year in Glasgow!!!

  • HOPE AND ANCHOR

  • fan f* ing tastic song

  • Edinburgh playhouse 1982, what an experience, noone comes close to the stranglers

  • @mattliam the low ceiling is a cool.

  • We mustn't underestimate Jet Blacks relentless pounding control on this track !

  • just seen Hugh in Denver and he kicked off the show with this one! Still Brilliant after all these years

  • cant wait to see em again, first saw them in 78 and have been an avid fan since, was priveldged to know them for a10 yr period, a great bunch of fellas.

  • Saw the Stranglers at the Ontario theatre in Wash. DC in 1980 along with Black Market Baby and Bad Brains. I remember this song was incredible. They showed the movie "Eraserhead" after the concert. By luck, I ended up drinking Heinekens with the band, afterwards, and when talking with Hugh, he told me that this film was his favorite. Still listening to them and they are timeless!

  • excellent track

  • The money was apparently not good playing some punk during this period. But the music was...

  • Apparently..........the sax player was Laura Logic.

  • @Alembic25

    yeah she is

in the album black and white i have a rare copy with her head on it instead of hughs

  • damn straight, keyboards and bass are exceptional. great band.

"stranger from another planet, welcome to our hole, just strap on your guitar and we'll play some rock n' roll..."

(FYI, Prong do an awesome cover..)

  • One of their best - this one....Raw & Edgy

  • Dave Greenfield ....fuckin brilliant keyboard player!

  • @bazoogaby : he gave them that edge no other bands at the time had. Simply a brilliant band.

  • @bazoogaby And bass peace everyone

  • "Didn't have the money round to buy a Morry Thou" -- what is a 'Morry Thou'?

  • it was a car

  • thanks for the reply

  • It's a pint of beer!!

  • Morris Minor....Also known as Morry thou' as it had a 1000cc engine !

    Happy Days !

  • Meatiest bass playing I've heard in long time. JJB is a black belt in Karate. I thought he was all set beat up some moron who used a camera at their show in Toronto years ago - I was about 10' away from the guy. Stopped playing, dived into the crowd, tore the film out of the camera then we were treated to a 5 minute lecture from Hugh Cornwall after the dust settled - ah the good old days :)

  • Pogo.... I Fu...n love this beat... pogo on....

  • Genius savage anthem of the era.

  • Best band of the era...and i should know. I play Bass god i wish i could play like JJB.

  • To RevAustin, Excellent video, top song, top band, just wanted to say, love the dancing crew up the front, don't know why you knock them, they're just going with the groove.... Anyway, love it!!, Still, like Peaches better!!! :-)

  • Still going? They must be 60 odd?

  • yep...the drummer is 70...still rocking....

  • Awesome...just awesome....

This track was played on Radio 2 today and I was blown away....Cracking....

Want to see them in concert soon!!!!But dont think they are playing Manchester???

  • I reckon those lads at the front are great dancers. Right into it.

  • I like the "bad dancers" mention in the description for no apparent reason.

  • Es un temazo!

  • Thats what you call a keyboard player.Makes Monty Oxymoron from the current Damned line up sound very average and hes good, and The Damned are my favourite band by a street!

  • Super Posting.Way back in the day in a much simpler time. Thanks mate.

  • Stranglers still tour - without Hugh Cornwell due to some stupid 'fight' years ago. Pity about that. Australian band The Angels from similar era - also had an argument which lasted decades - now back together jsut 2 years ago and pack in the old venues. Just my five cents worth!!! Get Hugh back in the Stranglers - I guess that's my plea.

  • Real musicians who served their apprenticeship not like the X factor crop of talentless wannabes!

  • @westpenninewoman Do you know if this is at the 688 Club in Atlanta, ca 1980?

  • @jaysiebeyer10 No it's the Hope and Anchor in Islington in 77

  • @sirmuttley Thank you, Sir!

  • @westpenninewoman think about what you said...

  • Im fairly sure the rattus album was done in one take so if you listen to it you get loads of feedback and it has a live feel to it.brilliant stuff.

  • EXCELLENT track! The only other band I have heard that did this one justice was Prong...

  • This song is for all the loser bands with a For Sale sign around their backs, which means it is for everyone.

  • Ha! Love the look on his face before he starts singing!

  • @chadisapunkrocker I know that's kinda like i know exatly what i 'm doing, bless Hugh.

  • I Personaly love the keyboard player in this song, we are doing this song in collage but no matter what no-one on earth could ever match the stranglers in this song :) its a classic

  • 12years old again

  • Yeah! 12 was when I got into The Stranglers, what a great band they were and went on to be.

  • true, this just sends me back.....

  • THE DAMNED were the Beatles of punk.

THE CLASH were the Rolling Stones of punk.

THE JAM were the Pink Floyd of punk.

But THE STRANGLERS. . .they were the Led Zeplin of punk.

Four musicians who were so in tune with each other, they complimented each others style, and collectively were like no one else

  • The stranglers were out on their own.

    Totally unique in every way

    Technically, there were better musicians,sure,

but collectively they were fuckin sensational and their music still sounds fresh over 30 years later.

Hand on heart, the only other bands I can honestly say that about are The Clash and The Jam.

But it's the stranglers' uniqueness that sets them apart

  • This was when they were pissed off at getting nowhere coz the punks were emerging and they had already been at it since 1974! But what a fucking sound!

They were angry and it showed!

They're just not quite the same these days and haven't been since the corporates got involved around the time of "La Folie"!

  • in 1978 me and the girls were sitting around when a man arrived with a testtube of amyl nitrate and Rattus Norvegus. the grip was got!

  • I dunno these geezers look like French Huegenots ta moi.I mean to say there is no such thing as English ethnicity old thing.

  • I'm an old wrinkle who works with a bunch of 20-somethings. Every once in a while, when the hippest of them are around, I'll throw one of my 25-year-old mix tapes into the boom box. They drop what they're doing. Their eyes bulge.

I'm very sad that the best is over.

  • pretty flakey and silly if you snap out of the whole indie pop state of mind. I know it's hard, just try to grow a pair for once

  • The best part I refered to was over by the time Indie Pop came along. And I DID grow a pair but they fell off....I'm really really old.

  • I'm sad the best is over and i'm glad i was there.

  • Wished I was working with you, mate!

I'm usually outvoted by youth when it comes to playing sounds at work!

  • Kids these days!

  • My fav Stranglers track ever.......

  • bad dancers? where? I don't see any. those guys are groovin.

  • I totally agree ;D

  • Kick ass music, Kick now and kick ass then

  • yes thebarnyrocks, this band is timeless

  • I absolutely agree with you 100%

  • A great band indeed. Such a shame Hugh left.

  • I love the way he's wearing a v-neck pullover under his jacket. How cool & innovative is that? Great song too!

  • ive seen them over 10 times, since 1978 until 2000,and they will allways be my fav all time punk band.they are great musicians and JJ simply the best bass player ever.

  • Awesome, I just got into this band, I listen to this song while skating, usually high as hell, its more acid rock than punk in my book, its got a classic British rock sound to it, and what the hell, they look cool as hell too, my favorite new band for sure

  • Yeah, these lyrics are excellent!

  • Great band. Great song.

  • Who the FUCK cares? They're an amazingly talented, awesome band!!

  • Punk IS (emphasis intended) a wide ranging genre of music and definitely includes keyboards [and a hammer if you want :-) ]. Just love it man. ;-)

This is one of my all time favourite bands and song.

  • I think you've spent too much time in Goa, mate. Not that I blame you :)

  • Comment removed

  • the morris 1000 was actually a very middle of the line automobile. brilliant line in this song - he aspires to mediocrity....

  • Played Sydney dive with strippers on the stage after giving interview to tabloid TV about the outrageous name. Banned from Tv for telling TV interviewer he was dickhead. Increased crowd by 200% next gig

  • Huge Cornball was a great front man - the emphasis being on 'front'

  • more classic punk!i love it!

  • Those were the days

  • ...And you should know...

  • Yeah it's the kind of old rock I feel proud playing to the youngsters

  • Hell Yeah i remember this one....

Versatile Stranglers....never boring...always eclectic and divers:-)

    I am young again...:-)

  • Brilliant song

  • Awesome song! Just sailed in while researching something else, and BAM!

  • Love the video, OP, those are 'kids' watching a band at a show, not 'bad dancers' *rolls eyes*

  • Choice choons!!!

    Those were the days.

  • Too right! I think we've entered a dark age: nothing like this happening anymore.

  • thanks for the memories

  • This song is awesome, if you dont like it you better get a grip on yourself before i do, because the Saxiphone in this song is played by my great uncle.

  • aww, that's sweet. u must b proud

  • yeah its pretty cool. hes a good man im deffinatly proud of him

  • For some reason I never realized there was a Sax in it, always thought it was one of Dave's awesome Organ noises.

  • I feel old. This came out when I was in high school.

Stranglers are one of the best. Ever.

  • Holy fuck, you are old!!! : )

  • Yes they were indeed. Don't feel old - I was in graduate school when this was out.

  • im from Alpha Centuri im 1,000,000 next week, and i fucking love the stranglers..

  • pure class

  • anyone from the planet pluto, aged 1000-5345 and really dig the stranglers let me know

  • I'm from the planet Pluto, but I'm 3,000 years older than that! Good to see you're keeping the Stranglers alive!

  • Anyone from toronto 16-18 and really really dig the stranglers let me know.

  • anyone from chicago 18-22 and really dig the stranglers let me know

  • I'm from Chicago but I'm 30 years older than that! Good to see you're keeping the Stranglers alive!

  • Was this before they became H fiends?

  • Brilliant Song.

  • " He's not a bad dancer-

    He's 'overly caucasian' " ^^

  • I was a teenager in the 70's and it was this song that defined the next generation - no more ABBA, no more Eagles, 10 CC, ELO, no more benign mind numbing MOTR sedation. This is the song of songs that got it going, forget the pistols, ramones it was these guys and this song that got the kids into the garages strapping on their guitars. Can't believe Jet Black is over 70 and still playing gigs.

  • Absolutely. This song was getting airplay on a std rock station in Cali/1977 the infamous KOME and I thought it was great - bought the record and loved it.

First punk song, 1st punk Lp, out of many more to come...

  • Great post. Add Fleetwood Mac and many others to your list of awful bands of that era. Their bank accounts should be raided for 'war crimes' committed. This song got me away from prog (it still had keyboards, after all) and into much better music.

  • got to disagree with you on E.L.O.,great band, jeff lynne was/is? a master song crafter,as were the stranglers and every band that put`s time into something new,not original because i dont believe in the word ``original``..everything came from something...Anyway The Stranglers ROCK!

  • now I find from week to week the sentance sticking fast ....

  • saw them last night in Brisbane, opened with this and just smashed it. fucking great.

  • Punchy and sleazy.Fuckin magic.Takes me back.

  • Zis a very exgtreme sung. Who sais that spomming is in this contry god. Why always play some stipid sungs that sais no thing anarchictic? I mean, what is the meaning? After all those? Young kid Hugh dezapoint and wonna start new live....Thas all...I meaning. Notings to warry and play bid sungs?? Why? Live is very god :)

  • Cool Song

  • my fart smells of wine yeh

  • 1 of the best songs ever written

  • Sparks copycat

  • sparks give it a rest

  • not a bad thing at all to sound like Sparks, their 70's stuff is great...Embarrased to say, always aware of Stranglers but never delved into them until yesterday lol like what i'm hearing so far

  • Awsome. Where was this filmed? It looks like Moles in Bath. Not sure I would have been a club back then having said that.

  • This is bad ass

  • I saw them live at the Roxy and the Brighton Conference center..in 76 and 78...God how they didnt mind the spit balls I dont know..the music was awesome..jean jaques bass awesome...this vid is a great for its time..but cant convey what it was like to see those guys in concert in those days..I'm giving it a five anyway

  • great song

  • Still up Rev. Good show

  • They should have mixed the bass a little higher ;-)

One of the things I love about this group is that Hugh and JJ always seemed to be trying their level best to outdo each other. There's some remarkable playing on their early records, but it's also so tastefully reductionist.

  • great track takes me back to the good

    old days.

  • ferrers why dont you fuck up?

  • It's defo "the money's no good".

  • good song i like it
