Tony was 22 when this was recorded. 22! I still lived with my parents and could barely check the oil in my car back then. While all of the people involved in civil unrest at this time in America were "making their mark", these cats were doing their thing and making a statement that will long outlive all of the garbage that was coming from the universities and inner cities. IMHO.
This is a GREAT performance----Wayne's solo simply will not rely on autopilot and Herbie dances on the highwire, even though Tony starts wiggling the wire on him 2/3's into his solo
Im glad that this was recorded to video ; as the quintet - due reasons beyond their control - couldnt stick around for the last 4 or 5 dates od the tour . I think the tour promoter of the jazz festival which toured almost all of Europe wasn't paying Miles and the quintet what was accorded .. This is a very high energy performance . Seek out the Audio CD if you can , Miles in Europe 1967 ( It consists this entire set , plus one from Sweden }
This quintet really got down . I wish there were more viedo of them ; but i think i ve read that that s very scarce I guess we got to cherish all that we have . May god bless these monumental jazz gods - Shorter , Miles , Tony W and Ron Carter ..
Tony Williams's drumming made me want to switch from guitar to drums when I was 18. I did. Looking at these videos reminds me why I did and also reminds me that I NEED TO GO PRACTICE! THANKS!
Yes. Very interesting. But I think, that we dont have do be worried, if it is wrong or not, because it was Tonys hi-hat... So what do we know about drumming anyway, huh?
My school had a crappy hi-hat stand where the rod would slide down, causing the top hat to raise. I think that's what happened here. Tony adjusts his hat's half way through the song probably to fix this, but they just kept going higher. That's my take on it, at least. Doesn't matter though, Tony still sounds fantastic.
We can only guess at why Tony thought this beneficial, but at least I can say that his foot technique enables him to set the hi-hat like this. His toes are always pressing down on the pedal and his heel never touches ground, it's almost like a leg-centered technique. As such, I would guess that the huge gap enables the hi-hat to better match the natural motion of his leg when he works the foot splash. And he is utterly brilliant at that.
Tony Williams is god

Oh yea. Tony loved to splash the hats like crazy. That man really could INCREASE the size of his drumkit.
