Most of the "armchair experts" that comment on you tube videos are just full of air. They probably could not find their butts even if they were having projectile dieaareeeahhhh! (and probably have never flown even a paper airplane or been out of their parents basement)
I'm not all that concerned with turn clearance and runway markings. But, I AM impressed with the video quality and the camera work that captured perfectly the awesome beauty and aggressiveness of this incredible aircraft.
1. It seemed a lot easier to use Google Earth rather than drive back down to the airport and count marks on the runway.
2. You'd have to ask the pilot to be sure ... but my guess as to his answer would be either "because I wanted to" or "the same reason a dog licks his own balls ... because I can"
Thanks for asking such important compelling questions
@AllenRockwell 1. Yeah but it would be more ACCURATE to use the runway markings. Considering you have to subtract 250 feet from the distance of the runway for taxi and lineup penalties it could have been SHORTER than you are calling it by several hundred feet.
2. "because I wanted to" or "the same reason a dog licks his own balls... because I can" is not written anywhere in any AF flight manual. 400 FT AGL is.
@jakes77564 Sorry that my lack of accuracy has disappointed you so much.
If you attend a few air shows you will see that FARs and AF flight manuals can be overridden. I've seen military a/c perform turns and other maneuvers 50-100 feet off the ground. I'm not sure why you are so concerned with when and where this made his turn. I'm sure he had authorization from the FAA, the airport, the air boss and his command before executing the maneuver at this show. And, if not ... why so concerned
@AllenRockwell It was a combat takeoff. If people are shooting at you, the LAST thing you want to do is keep climbing straight out at a constant rate.
@jyokid Yes, you are correct. That is what they were demonstrating that day .. as well as the tactical landing which is pretty much the opposite flight profile as the take off, you come in high, dive down and land fast.
@jakes77564 because theres no restriction saying you have to attain 400 AGL before you turn, just have to have min maneuvering speed for the flap setting to make the turn
400 AGL is an IFR requirement that does not apply on a tactical departure. "Flight manual" is a vague reference that does not apply to any particular publication.
seems to be a issue with the comments as well, the tube is full of bugs lately, sad as it used to work so well, this is my third attempt to lay a comment here
Empty tanks + zero payload = short takeoff.

Why would you measure takeoff distance with Google Earth? Why not look at the boards or the runway markings?
Why did he turn before 400 FT AGL?
