I have a signed copy of Pandora's Box by Mr. Pajitnov. My SO was working at Microsoft while he was there in 1999/2000 (don't know if he's still there) and got to meet him. It is definitely a prized possession.
I absolutely love to hear passionate people talk about what they're passionate about. (and Tetris is especially wonderful) Thanks for this video!
Though a relative boring game with repetive patterns with accelerating entropy over time making when you first place blocks down it looks like an orderly system making Tetris really easy and boring in the beginning and slowly more entertaining over time is quite a fun way of thinking about tetris. Or Fun=Images per Ttetris² really low at 1 Tetristime at 2 Tetristime slightly funnier and after a while extremely fun. TimeTetris is equal to (blockfallspeed/s)² Bfs measured in blocks per second.
@livedandletdie Purely fictional mathematics and if they're correct who cares it's just a game and fun is different for everybody and though the score system is the real thing driving people to keep going because they see proof of how good they are and that giving them an adrenaline kick. But the game is really static meaning that it's really a no brainer while playing making it nothing special just another "static" challenge for our brain. Static in a sense that it has a regular pattern.
James should design a sixty symbols style tetris game, where each of the falling blocks represents an element randomly take from the periodic table. Not only do you have to match the shape, you have to be careful about the chemical reactions of mixing the elements! (Remember me when the cash rolls in) ;o)
My thoughts exactly, I saw the interview yesterday and just can't stop thinking about it. I'm even considering a career in physics just because I can. Something about his personality feels fresh. I do not know how to explain it but the feeling is good.
You guys are fantastic, except for the Tetris episodes. Is Duke Nukem next? I hope not. Perhaps you have many gamers in your subscriber base, so games might be fine for everyone. But as a non-gamer, I'd rather hear about straight Science - rather than human gaming.
I'm hoping the Tetris thing stops soon. Not everyone are game addicts. I assume that since I am not one, there must be some of us out there.
For some people, points in a game do not equal feelings of accomplishment
@laxr5rs part of these videos has always been the human behind the scientist though... I think what they do outside work sometimes reflects on them as a researcher!
You'll be pleased to know there's more Tetris for a while though!
@nottinghamscience You could also have pointed out the two other channels dedicated to purely science-related things. Or that Tetris would at least have the side effect of knowing how to organize stuff! =P
@laxr5rs Sorry, i wasn't going to post something here but.. granted, it's a game, it doesn't accomplishes anything by winning points, but i think it's a wonderful tool to exercise the minds of younger people.
You see, i'm not a Tetris fan either, but there's something about that game that makes you get more.. how can i say, quick thinking?
how many videos do they have to do that fit your requirements for entertainment before they can do something for the other 99% of the people out there? I'm sure you would complain anyway, what with the outrageous price you pay to watch these videos. Noone likes complaining whiners...just for future reference.
btw, I'm a mechanical engineer, physics minor, and plan to make a major. and a tetris addict. I hold good records in sprint. 40 lines 40 sec :/ ... I blame it on the keyboard because I use arrows in a weird configuration.
Still, I don't see myself as this guy foreveraloneS3.jpg ;_;

this is probably one of the best videos you've made Brady, and certainly the most interesting person you've ever interviewed here on youtube, a massive thumb up, and greetings from poland
There should be an extra score in the game for clearing all blocks from the ground! This is very hard to achieve and is left without no notice. Any code writers reading this please take the advise!
The best part about Tetris and the reason I'm a total addict is that there's always something else to do. I thought I was good, tried Tetris the Grand Master, and got murdered. Years later, after coming so far, there's still so much left to do and maybe there always will be.
@darklordl3on It's by far NOT the only game that is never the same. Take any online FPS or even MMORPG. U can hardly even repeat a similar situation in a MMORPG and u can NEVER have the same situation in a FPS.
