Anybody, I need help. I have a brand new HP g6 laptop that has 8 GB of RAM with Windows 7 64bit yet it still lags a bit. Especially on Firefox while playing Cityville. Meanwhile, my long in the tooth Toshiba laptop maxed out at 2 GB of RAM with Vista actually runs much smoother than the HP. What gives? What can I do to get the true performance out of the HP? With those resources, shouldn't that HP be screaming fast?
@powermaks You mean GB. Either that or you're talking about hard drive space. No consumer-tier computer on the planet is using terabytes of RAM right now.
dang is that office on hovering in a street intersection? tons of car beeps and honks. wasn't necessarily distracting for the vid, just thought it would be unpleasant overtime. I thought where I work had a bit of street noise, but compared to that, it's almost silence!
i hv 4bg ddr2 ram and im using xp sp3 64bit OS on my desktop bt in computer properties its shows only 3.00gb why is that so??? and also does the bits depend upon the processor , coz wen i try to install 64bit OS in my laptop is shows "processor doesnot support 64bit install a 32bit OS". plz help
@hardnocks24: Your processor also need to have 64-bit support then only you can install 64-bit OS, if you are seeing only 3G or RAM that means you are running the 32-bit version.
here's my setup, i want to start fraps filming and need to know if this is good enough.
windows 7 64bit
2 x 4gb ram for 8gb ram
WD caviar black 1tb drive, now i could partition this drive but im assuming getting a 500+ drive is better?
asus nividia geforce gts 450
with these specs do you think i could record decent footage for games like team fortress/killing floor/css or maybe bf3 with high+ settings? im thinking of getting a second gts 450 to run dual gpu's because theyre not very expensive
@FragBashers Yeah, I think you should be able to. I'm not exactly clear on the specs of the 450. I have the 555 card and I can record those games at 30 fps on high. I'm using 4 gb of ram so you should probably see better results than I.
I tend to buy as much RAM as I can afford, provided that it's not too expensive. Generally, today I have found that 4gb is the bare minimum, 8gb is great. It's important that the DIMM's are the same size though...
Can i mess up my pc if i put in 12gb of ram on a i5 2500k processor and windows 7 64bit i want 12gb because i want to play battle field 3 and MW3 on ultra while running FRAPS then editing it. (i have a graphics card that will run it on ultra if it matters).
@UnbOuNdPWneR1: Nope you can add 12 GB without issues, I hope your motherboard has 4 Memory slots so you can go with something like this 4 GB x 2 and 2 GB x 2 for a total of 12 Gigs.
I hope you HDD is fast enough coz using FRAPS at high fps I have heard the IO many times creates a bottle-neck, anyways use a dedicated HDD / SSD to store the FRAPS videos when playing and recording the footage.
@geekyranjit will a dedicated Western Digital 1TB 7200rpm be ok i got a SDD to run windows and a another Western Digital for storage. (oh and so you know im a noob at building PCs) and i subscribed because you such a good help
@UnbOuNdPWneR1: If you already have another drive in your computer in your case the existing WD that should be good enough point to store your FRAPS data on that drive.
i have 4 x 2GB (8.2GB total) ram running in 4 channel mode running game like Crysis 2, Battlefield 3 all maxed out i never use more than 4GB Video editing in 3d/HD again that never gets over 2GB (that work is done by the 2xHD5770's)
2GB fine for most users
4GB gamers / editing
8GB not needed rely
16GB again not needed (i have room for this upgrade but do not see the point yet)
32GB can upgrade to this also but there is still no need for this much
@danielsayles just to add to the list, 16GiB and up become more useful if you do a lot of 1080p or higher (2k, 4k etc) video encoding, particularly if you're using raw YUV. I have a 16 core 16 GiB workstation and the only thing that uses it fully is ffmpeg/x264. In fact dropping the clock speed in favour of more cores is actually a performance loss for heavy single threaded applications like most games.
@danielsayles: I use my computer a lot of video editing are with HD videos with 4 GB RAM it used to slow down a bit at times when editing large video footages, moved to 8 GB and now video editing is a lot better and a smoother experience so for media professionals 8 GB is the minimum I recommend.
@geekyranjit I agree, 8Gb is perfect when really stressing your system. I've seen my ram usage maxed at 7.5 GB, but that's rare and only when I video edit and process files. 4 GB is fine for most peeps.
I could do the same video editing as you with only 2GB of Main System RAM and still do it in half the Time here is why
Graphics Cards these days have faster memory than Ram are almost the same size (mine is 2GB) so having my 2 Graphics cards work on that leaves my main ram unused
I have 8gb at Idle 1300 MHz (DDR3) when in use the CPU link puts it at 1500MHz
that's all ok but very slow when there is 4GB of GDDR5 Running at 128 bit GDDR5,5800 MHz Effective.using that is faster for me
@danielsayles Should I upgrade my HP computer that runs windows 7 32 bit 2GB. Im thinking of upgrading it because I am a gamer and I love to play minecraft. My computer is having troble running it.
@EjakeProductions Mine-Craft uses around 1GB and Windows 7 (32 Bit) needs 700 MB to 1GB also so it should not be a ram issue (but with Mine Craft it has got Memory leak problems so 4GB would help with that if that's what the problem is)
whats your CPU/ GPU like? if using an on-board GPU then try upgrading that
If your on a lap top Get more Ram (laptops rely more on the ram as they do not have dedicated GPU's
i also had problems running that game >.< was fun thou xD
Hi, I appreciate you vids. I didnt know what I should get for my new computer in way of Ram but this was helpful. I have an old PowerBook G4 and looking to purchase an IMac and I will be doing some video editing, so thanks
@2075vj: As on now the Powerbook G4 is simply too old for HD video editing, I would suggest going for a new computer and yes iMac is a great machine for video editing.
@geekyranjit please suggest a free video editing prog for windows, i just want to download clips and trim them, remove audio from them, can movie maker do that?
@bharatkumargupta: As I have mentioned earlier I do not use windows as my primary OS and do all my video editing on my Mac so no idea about Windows based editing programs.
@prasenjit815 hey the prog u suggested is awesome, i really liked the interface + features of it and i didnt knew about if before, so yeah thanks again :)
hey, I've just ordered 8gig of ram for my macbook pro, I'm currently on 4gig. I'm struggling to find an answer online to what it will actually do to improve my machine. I'm buying it based on common sense, more ram = better! i use my mac to record music with many tracks, so i am hoping it will improve how smooth this runs.
@mrchrismckay: If you are into media creation then moving from 4 Gig to 8 will help, I also mostly use my Mac for media creation but Video in my case and moving from 4 GB to 8 GB helped quite a bit, if you would like to know how mac os uses memory check this other video that I had created regarding the same youtube.com/watch?v=Iiw397iCv8o
My friend, I'm looking for something to store a lot of videos. i'm trying to get into game recording. I'm looking for a laptop mostly. I do not want to get an sort of gaming rid, I'm justing looking for something that can store videos, edit videos, and do other computer stuff like word and stuff. I'm not looking for a mac though, don't like macs.
Okay, so im a PC gamer and making my build, trying to be cheap, soo I play games and edit videos of the recorded games, obviously i can't play games while video editing, with a budget should i get 8GB or 16 GB of RAM.?
@ms97841 Yes you can just make sure you get the same speed of ram for example if your 2gb stick is rated for 666 mhz or 800 get the same speed also check your mothebo4ard to see if you have a empty slot to add this 4 gb ram stick
Question:I have a old Dell desktop running on Microsoft XP. It is slow and I want to turn it into a fast gaming computer. It is always telling me I have low virtual memory and my games (or just "game" at the moment) take forever to do simple tasks. Any ideas? If you need more info on the computer so you can fully answer my question inbox me. Thank you.
@Pivotidiots123: I am sorry but if your computer is pretty old about 5 years or more it's best to invest in a new one for gaming...... if you still want to get a little more from this computer you can add a little more RAM and that virtual memory situation would be solved, but if you wan to play the latest 3D Games in high resolution you would need to invest in a new computer with powerful 3D graphic card.
Really strait to the point ! I have a question. I'm running on a 2011 MacBook Pro 13" and I have 4gb of RAM. I need to upgrade because Final Cut Pro X doesn't run smooth at all. Since I don't have a separated graphics card, should I upgrade to 8 or 16? I want to do HD video editing at 720p or if possible full 1080p. Thank you in advance :)
@VladKimakovsky: I also use FCP X and found 4 GB to be a limitation and performance to be a sluggish upgrade to 8 GB and that should be more than enough I am using FCPX with 8 GB and use it to make all videos in 720p and it works like a charm.
I like how you break everything down so us 'None Geeks' will understand you. Will too much RAM hurt your computer? I've heard of people buying part's that are much better than other parts of their computer and frying the parts.
@ThomasCreel: You can have large amount of RAM in your computer it depends upon your motherboard budget boards support upto 16 GB and most motherboards upto 32 GB but putting up that much RAM is not needed for every day regular use, it's like fitting a 150 Gallon tank in your car you can do that but realistically you will only fill say 30 Gallons so that extra might never get used hence a wasteful expenditure.
Hows 12gb of ram? is there a noticeable diff from 8 to 12? and is it even worth it to go to 12gb? I render, download, upload at the same time, and i usually have more than 4 browsers open at once (tab wise), plus i run some high end performance games on my comp. I would go with 24gb but its not worth it. I want to know what is the best amount of ram u can get that is not an unneccessary amount. I already know 4gb is not enough. I have been using 4, for the past 2yrs, and my comp is very slow.
@blackspeed97: It will depend upon your motherboard google your motherboard model for more info.......... also if you are using a Windows 32-bit version max it can use is 4 GB.
hey, ranjit,i study physics,if i want to do a lot of analysis on particle collisions, such as to see how the debris of after the collision, and identify the different kind of particles, how much ram do i need?do u think i should use 8GB of ram?and why u said that i should use two 4GB of rams, instead of one 8GB of ram??
@YUKAICHUNG1: see your software specs for getting an idea how much RAM your particular software needs, I doubt it would be RAM bound but software like those lean more towards CPU cycles, BTW by using 2 stick of RAM or 4 (basically pairs) you can enable dual-channel paths (128 bit vs 64-bit for single RAM module) so in certain cases it can speed up things particularly in very memory intensive applications, google dual-channel memory for more info.
@ying111111111: If you are using Windows OS they are available in 32bit and 64 bit editions, the problem is that 32 bit has a limitation of accessing a max of 4GB of memory, but is the most compatible with old hardware..... on the other hand If you are using a Mac then you don't have to worry coz Leopard / Snow Leopard / Lion etc are all 64 bit OS.
please reply so that means if i load 16gb of ram it only uses 8gb of ram?

hey, ranjit,i study physics,if i want to do a lot of analysis on particle collisions, such as to see how the debris of after the collision, and identify the different kind of particles, how much ram do i need?do u think i should use 8GB of ram?and why u said that i should use two 4GB of rams, instead of one 8GB of ram??

@YUKAICHUNG1: see your software specs for getting an idea how much RAM your particular software needs, I doubt it would be RAM bound but software like those lean more towards CPU cycles, BTW by using 2 stick of RAM or 4 (basically pairs) you can enable dual-channel paths (128 bit vs 64-bit for single RAM module) so in certain cases it can speed up things particularly in very memory intensive applications, google dual-channel memory for more info.

How much RAM does Windows 7 64-Bit uses when idle ?
vasoo101 6 months ago
@vasoo101: I did not test it but Windows 7 64-bit will not install unless you have 2 GB of RAM the minimum specs is 2 GB for Windows 7 64bit.
if you are using Windows 7 64bit it's best to have a minimum of 4 GB Ram.

Ranjit what is the diffrence between 32 bit and 64 bit and how can i upgrade it?
ying111111111 6 months ago
@ying111111111: If you are using Windows OS they are available in 32bit and 64 bit editions, the problem is that 32 bit has a limitation of accessing a max of 4GB of memory, but is the most compatible with old hardware..... on the other hand If you are using a Mac then you don't have to worry coz Leopard / Snow Leopard / Lion etc are all 64 bit OS.
