@anlinwang2 It's true, no where else beats the Czech Republic in this matter.. For me Janáček was the finest Czech composer. Jenůfa becomes the best twentieth century opera when Puccini's oeuvre is recognized as being nineteenth century in origin. Káťa Kabanová leaves me breathless at its end.
@P1B1U1H1 Czech women are Slavic which explains much of their physical beauty. Just compare Czech, Polish, and Russian women with German, English, or Netherlandish ones. Genetics play a big role- bone structure, etc. Another reason is that Czech women, like in most nations east of Germany, have not been carried away by feminist theory that says women must be on the same level as men in all things. Czech women generally realise they're not like men and are proud of it.

This piece is about 80 times more stunning than Fur Elise, Eine Kleine Nachtmusik, Overture 1812, Canon, and Ode to Joy combined. Why is it less well known?
@APolaris Dear APolaris, I don't want to be paranoid, but this is simply true: it's because the authors of all your compositions you mentioned were from big nations, either Germany or Russia. While Smetana has spoken only German throughout his life, up to the moment when he became deaf and when he learned some Czech, it is true that he was promoted to the Czech national composer. And the Czech nation is 8-20x smaller than the two nations mentioned previously. Not enough mass to propagate it.
I wouldn't say that a composer's fame is only related to the size of his homecountry. Quality survives. This is true for Mozart or Beethoven or Bach as well as for other, "smaller" composers. The higher publicity of some just might come from their larger amount or steady quality of music.
Also in Germany there were great composers who aren't known everywhere else. Some of my first childhood-memories of music contain the Dresden Concerti of Heinichen and - Smetana's Moldau. Great music!
@BlauerBooo Right, agreed. Still, Smetana was borrowed and declared our (Czech) national composer, so the foreigners may find him provincial just for this very reason. There have been many emotions in the 19th century about whether Smetana or Dvořák was better. Dvořák was 17 years younger and a true patriot - but Smetana was already "the" composer of the nation. Paradoxically, Dvořák became #1 Czech composer globally while Smetana remained #1 in Czechia.
Cool, I didn't know that with Dvorák being the international star and Smetana the national from Czechia. But.. yes, I remember that in school we first listened to music from Dvorák, "From the New World", in 5th grade. In contrast to this I only know Smetana from my private music.
But my music class hasn't been very good anyway... ^^
@lumajs Smetena is a great composer, but Mozart is still better. Larger nations tend to produce more genius simply by virtue of number of persons, once civilization exists. What we should all be asking is why we have not heard of Chinese composers.
@luficek Dear lufíčku, please read at least 3 comments in the thread to find a simple answer to your question - and please avoid obscene acronyms in the future, OK? Deal.
@guyincognito84 It has been explained about 10 times in this comment section already. The theme of Vltava has become a template for Israel's national anthem, Hatikvah.

Slezané bývali zemědělci a horníci, kdežto Valaši výhradně ovčáci, a přišli kolem 16. století z Rumunska.
@lumajs: teď mně to došlo, vy asi myslíte Slezsko?
I was in Prague with my ballet school this summer, and one night we went sailing on Moldau. It's one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen! The sky and the water was dark, and the city was lightened up. So enchanting.
This melody is very similiar to slovenian traditional song "čuk se je oženil." You can sing it: 0:59 to 1:05 is "čuk se je oženil tralala," and from 1:05 to 1:12 is "sova ga je uzela hopsasa,".. hehe, but it truly is similiar, specialy if we know that Smetana used his traditional melodies... He was Czech right? OH that also proves that slovenes were west slavs not south! Slava slovenom :D
I just listened to Eva Hren's version of "čuk se je oženil tralala" and it is literally identical to our Czech children song, "kočka leze dírou [pes oknem]" which means "a cat is crawling though a hole [and the dog through a window]".
I wonder which of the "two" songs is older and which of them was stolen haha. For a YouTube version of the "cat" song, search for either of:
damn this truly is same! "čuk se je oženil tralala" means little owl has married tralala, and "sova ga je vzela hopsasa" means a owl took him hopsasa. I found out that this two songs were created in same era, but we probably will never learned which nation made it first :D but it isn't important to me, even if Czech people are creators (what is, if you ask me more possible, becuse this melody is much more important in Czech culture then in slovene)... But it doesn't matter :)
i borrowed a book on Smetana from the music library and it appears (i might have interpreted it wrongly) that Vltava appeared first, and the "Cat is crawling through a hole' appeared in major later on.
of course, both were based on the Italian folksong, 'La Mantovana'...
Even more obviously, open the second 2/2 part of this Smetana video (follow the related videos on the right).
In this 1/2 part, only the X-minor version can be found - although from 2:29 it includes the sheet of music for the song and a pictture of a cat in the hole, and dog in the window.
But in the 2/2 part - see the related video - from 6:30 to 6:55 or so, there is also the original X-major version of the kids' song (also with the sheet of music).
Just for the sake of completeness, the theme from the two folk songs - and/or its Vltava reincarnation - has been used in "Hatikvah" [search], the Israeli national anthem.
why is there suddenly a israeli flag and map of palestine on the pictures - it's a beautiful song describing the beauty of my home country, and i don't like it being tarnished by a flag of a country that commits crimes against humanity.
Asi protože izraelská hymna (Ha Tikva) je podobná Vltavě a Izraelci ji hrávali v dobách, kdy jim Britové zakázali hrát Ha Tikvu. Nicméně Smetanova Vltava je starší než Ha Tikva.
very gracious. When you listen this composition, you feel proud because you hear and see how big things can make only one man. This song fills you and makes you proud because you are alive and you can enjoy in many good things that this world gives!!!!!!!!!!
Hi Maria, I've seen the movie in a cinema, too. Nice - and also classical music. ;-)
Just to be sure: if someone were plagiarizing, it was the Carribean guys because Vltava was written in 1874, possibly inspired by the children's song, "Cat is crawling through a hole, a dog through the window".
The composition has also inspired the Israeli national anthem (Hatikvah) which is why the flag appears in the video.
Dear Israeli Patriot, that's the reason. ;-) The author of the Israeli anthem borrowed the theme from Smetana. Sorry to disappoint your patriotism - I am a big friend of Israel... ;-)
Nothing more than Smetana's Vltava can recall all those beautiful memmories on Prague and the great country of the Czech Republic. You should be proud of being Czech. Stop with the hatred, envy, euroscepticism and become Czech once again, Czech nation that Smetana would be proud of.I wish you all the best and good luck. Greetings from Great Britain
Dear Markovic, thanks for your mostly nice words. That's really interesting that Euroskepticism has penetrated even discussions about Vltava.
But OK. Smetana only spoke German until he was old - when he learned Czech - and he wrote "My Country". If you're interested, this country of his was not the European Union but Bohemia. ;-) So please, count Smetana as a Euroskeptic, too!
I would find attempts to abuse Smetana as a tool for further EU integration to be really bizarre.
So...Im Czech...i dont know who you are..but i know that youre stupid idiot, because Bedrich Smetana was Czech..NOT GERMAN...Bedrich Smetana is typical czech name..and he was borned in czech republic, lived there and he also can speak german coz he need it work hos wor...
Dear Wopice, Bedřich Smetana could only speak German, and not Czech, until he was 60 or so. Well, Smetana is a name of Czech origin while Cimrman is a name of German origin. ;-)
Dear Markovic21, thank you for your very nice and friendly comment. The history of our small nation can tell you the reason of euroscepticism and its roots. I understand that years under the command of Habsburg´s Austria, Nazy Germany and mainly Soviets have created those feelings of distrust of our public. UK was always free nation. We were so happy we can make our own decisions once again and now we will listen to Brussel´s orders. Best wishes to you too, friend. Greetins from Prague.
Never before I´ve never heard such a beautiful melody. Normally I don´t like that kind of music, but it is fantastic. If you listen to this, you will be able to hear the river, I think. It´s fascinating. (Sorry for my bad english, I´m German.)
No on byl také náš vážený národní skladatel Friedrich Smetana až do důchodu Němec, který neuměl česky ani slovo, takže je přibližně stejný Čech jako Slovák, jako že já nás osobně stejně nerozlišuji. ;-)
Doporučuji také druhou část tohoto videa - viz vpravo Bedřich Smetana: Vltava (2/2).

I found out that this two songs were created in same era, but we probably will never learned which nation made it first :D but it isn't important to me, even if Czech people are creators (what is, if you ask me more possible, becuse this melody is much more important in Czech culture then in slovene)... But it doesn't matter :)

i borrowed a book on Smetana from the music library and it appears (i might have interpreted it wrongly) that Vltava appeared first, and the "Cat is crawling through a hole' appeared in major later on.
of course, both were based on the Italian folksong, 'La Mantovana'...
cutefidgety 2 years ago
Even more obviously, open the second 2/2 part of this Smetana video (follow the related videos on the right).
In this 1/2 part, only the X-minor version can be found - although from 2:29 it includes the sheet of music for the song and a pictture of a cat in the hole, and dog in the window.
But in the 2/2 part - see the related video - from 6:30 to 6:55 or so, there is also the original X-major version of the kids' song (also with the sheet of music).
lumajs 2 years ago
Just for the sake of completeness, the theme from the two folk songs - and/or its Vltava reincarnation - has been used in "Hatikvah" [search], the Israeli national anthem.

why is there suddenly a israeli flag and map of palestine on the pictures - it's a beautiful song describing the beauty of my home country, and i don't like it being tarnished by a flag of a country that commits crimes against humanity.
CeliaLaMariposa 2 years ago
Asi protože izraelská hymna (Ha Tikva) je podobná Vltavě a Izraelci ji hrávali v dobách, kdy jim Britové zakázali hrát Ha Tikvu. Nicméně Smetanova Vltava je starší než Ha Tikva.

from about 1:00 it reminds of Pirates of the Carribean :-P just a teeny bit..I love this piece it's so beautiful and inspiring :D
CRAZY4MUSIC11 2 years ago
Hi Maria, I've seen the movie in a cinema, too. Nice - and also classical music. ;-)
Just to be sure: if someone were plagiarizing, it was the Carribean guys because Vltava was written in 1874, possibly inspired by the children's song, "Cat is crawling through a hole, a dog through the window".
The composition has also inspired the Israeli national anthem (Hatikvah) which is why the flag appears in the video.

Why if there an Israeli flag in 2:40?
But the funny thing about it that this compesition sounds a hell like the Israeli national anthem.
Israelipatriot92 2 years ago
Dear Israeli Patriot, that's the reason. ;-) The author of the Israeli anthem borrowed the theme from Smetana. Sorry to disappoint your patriotism - I am a big friend of Israel... ;-)

Nothing more than Smetana's Vltava can recall all those beautiful memmories on Prague and the great country of the Czech Republic. You should be proud of being Czech. Stop with the hatred, envy, euroscepticism and become Czech once again, Czech nation that Smetana would be proud of.I wish you all the best and good luck. Greetings from Great Britain
markovic21 3 years ago 4
Dear Markovic, thanks for your mostly nice words. That's really interesting that Euroskepticism has penetrated even discussions about Vltava.
But OK. Smetana only spoke German until he was old - when he learned Czech - and he wrote "My Country". If you're interested, this country of his was not the European Union but Bohemia. ;-) So please, count Smetana as a Euroskeptic, too!
I would find attempts to abuse Smetana as a tool for further EU integration to be really bizarre.
lumajs 3 years ago
So...Im Czech...i dont know who you are..but i know that youre stupid idiot, because Bedrich Smetana was Czech..NOT GERMAN...Bedrich Smetana is typical czech name..and he was borned in czech republic, lived there and he also can speak german coz he need it work hos wor...
wopice 3 years ago
Dear Wopice, Bedřich Smetana could only speak German, and not Czech, until he was 60 or so. Well, Smetana is a name of Czech origin while Cimrman is a name of German origin. ;-)
lumajs 3 years ago
Dear Markovic21, thank you for your very nice and friendly comment. The history of our small nation can tell you the reason of euroscepticism and its roots. I understand that years under the command of Habsburg´s Austria, Nazy Germany and mainly Soviets have created those feelings of distrust of our public. UK was always free nation. We were so happy we can make our own decisions once again and now we will listen to Brussel´s orders. Best wishes to you too, friend. Greetins from Prague.

frufruJ 3 years ago

No on byl také náš vážený národní skladatel Friedrich Smetana až do důchodu Němec, který neuměl česky ani slovo, takže je přibližně stejný Čech jako Slovák, jako že já nás osobně stejně nerozlišuji. ;-)
Doporučuji také druhou část tohoto videa - viz vpravo Bedřich Smetana: Vltava (2/2).
