We defeated one attempt to privatize the internet and move it over to corporations. Only the public uproar stopped it. Imagine if corporations started choosing what videos appeared on searches and related column
You are right about the internet being the last bastion for true unspoiled free speech. My natural cynicism says that they will eventually steal it from the people but we have it till then!! Thanks for the video, you always teach me something.
Well, what if the US population did the same thing to Bush? What if everyone stopped work just long enough to ask out loud their questions whether they were working in an office, mending a car, reading the news, shopping in the mall..... It'd be over in 30 seconds .... and then it happened the next week.. the next day ... and so on ...
No rally cry, no bearing arms, but instead: intelligent playfulness - 'hey Mr Bush, no fuss intended BUT REALLY you must talk to us straight - on our terms - and we'll consider your answers.....after all we (well, some of us might have) elected you ...... '
In 1 minute you could totally bring him more to account than a hundred discussions or protests ever could - and with no effort needed.
I'm surprised to be honest the internet is still just cheap TV / porn / trivia / self promotion ... when with a little imagination and ...well. .. 'pazazz' ...... an entire population can communicate and therefore ACT instantly and spontaneously in this 'fun 'n' fanatical' way with absolutely no effort whatsoever!! ....kind of political flash mobbing I guess....
So anyway back to paris hilton and posh and becks ....(and family guy, Yay !)
Yes, "calling them out" would be vital to a society that is willing to deal with the consequences of it's actions, which is aware of and accountable for the actions of it's "leaders," the ways in which it's tax revenues are distributed, and the social/economic structures that grow out of it's day-to-day activities.
Personally, though, I am more interested in what happens to us than I am in what happens to Bush.
Well (without wishing to appear hysterical) I would say 'don't waste too much time' to those wishing to call them to account... it seems that under the pretext of a war of terror (sorry I should say war 'on' terror) the US gov are taking away so many fundamental civil liberties to the point that it may soon become an awful lot harder to hold them to account!
..... one small example of erosion of civil liberties I heard about recently (I should say not verified) is that in NY it is now (or soon to be) ILLEGAL to film in public without aquiring written permission from the authorities in advance!!!... It seemed quite vague like 'any gathering of more than 2 people filming' or something similar can be stopped .... presumably camera/ film confiscated etc!
Any YT film makers hear about that one?
(... and the chip implant thing is fucking scary!)
The legal filament that we americans gaze towards for help ( like impeachment ) are more decptive vagaries of illusion. The people have only one power over government, and it often involves putting our blood on the line. We must be prepared to physicaly fight these pigs in suits, IMHO. They are terrified that the TV might someday no longer mezmerise us.
Yes they are concerned...as TV is losing its mesmerizing hold on many. Totalitarian regimes need to be able to author the "Broadcast" and control whatever medium it uses -- TV, radio, Hollywood, print, etc.).
According to Gene Youngblood, this is the first time in history when a medium (the internet) exits that totalitarian regimes do not yet control. It is up to us to find ways to use it fully before any of the attempts to clamp down on it takes effect, before the "big message" becomes imbedded in every other hyperlink, and we are lulled yet again into drinking the Kool Aid, or perhaps feigning a token and placebo like resistance.
I guess this is only a short clip (as mentioned) but my first impression was the same also BUT I also think protests can be non productive too .. because in each case the end result is achieved: discussion, venting, protest, political views shown, publicity, enlightenment ... whatever....(and not bad things at all) but what is never achieved is anything practical and immediate.
Actually, at the time of this taping, Kliint and his friend Caroline, had just given most their possessions away before embarking on journey around this country to participate in civil actions almost a year ago.
well, that's cool that they did that, I tend to want to see more reactionary action than analytical dissection of the troubles we got. I have a narrow view sometimes. glad to be here!
2) this idea that the entertainment factor in our access to information affects our ability to process that information away from other forms of entertainment .
There are two ideas I hear in this one-minute clip that I believe make it worthy of note.
1) the sacredness of Holy Land regardless of one's particular religion, and in this case "The Land of Two Rivers" as Kliint refers to it, as Holy, perhaps, because of it's significance as the birthplace of so much common cultural history, prior to the establishment of any of the contemporary religions which have their identities wrapped up in the area.
The idea behind doing a series of Bohm Notes is to create a shared space that is consciously centered on growth as a community (recognizing that a community is not separate from the individuals who make it up) through the act of conscious listening (internal and external). A single instance does not make the thing, just as a single comment does not make a conversation. The thing itself is not the thing...it's the stuff that happens in between.
What often happens, though, is that this engenders two kinds of response "right on!" and "you ignorant fuck, you have no idea what you're talking about." I believe this fosters a continual reversion to the safety of the false dichotomy and maintains us in a permanent state of contention, wherein there is little room for growth.
Do you think YT could be structured any better to steer comments and vids away from that kind of thing?
I noticed my own comments read back as far more certain/ set than I actually am - the 500 character limit does not help - in reality I know that I have no certainty about these things and I would be happy to be proved either right, wrong or 'different'.....
... it's true, a lot more people should ask if they are really ENTITLED to an opinion - and if not how they can BECOME entitled instead of becoming more defensive .... when a defensive attitude is dropped, often two 'opposing' views can be seen to be two points actually coexisting at different places along the same line of uncertainty.... in which case the most intelligent thing to do is to look for a third point (of view).
to answer your question...YT is what it is, a business, and carries no greater social obligation to the people who use it.
I think that as individuals we can try to maintain an awareness of the limitations of the various methods of communication in which we are engaged - posted response, video, art, language itself.
A lot of the political commentary that happens on YT tends to take the form of "I'm saying this because I'm right, and I know, and people need to listen to me." A lot of these videos are great...I have seen people find ways to articulate thoughts and feelings I have in ways I never could.
911 was either 'allowed', 'helped' or made' to happen - there is little difference in any case - it was NEEDED TO SCARE/FOOL THE US POPULATION INTO GIVING UP THEIR FREEDOM AND EMBRACING MILITARY DICTATORSHIP.
Just thought I'd add - yes the US 'war on terror' and the conflicts in M.East is at best not justified .. and worse was probably entirely concocted by US (or rather elements behind the gov) in order to gain public support (and taxes) for increasingly hostile foreign AND domestic policies (erosion of civil liberties etc). The current stalemate is intentional and ensures US can set up permanent military bases in the middle east.
Thanks for the video TinDC .... ... er... but... I don't see anything more than some dude chatting about Iraq - and a girl agreeing with what he just said... why/ how is this even different to most casual student-y conversations, let alone any kind of 'brainstorming' ....
This is actually an excerpt from several hours of footage of a conversation between Kliint and me (girl), two of the original tourists from the film, Tourists in DC. It was shot some time ago, and due to the nature and scope of the conversation we are still in the process of editing it into palatable clips appropriate for a venue such a YT.
This particular clip seemed relevant to the video to which it was posted as a response, so we went ahead and put it up.
They best not try to take my youtube away..I will kick them in the nuts!!

In the American system, it's called impeachment. Lots of us want to call those boys into the front room. Hopefully, the internet is helping do that;)

I agree with some of what he say's, I have to point out that sitting on a couch bitching won't BURN THE SYSTEM DOWN.

we all have a narrow view most of the time.
Just a note, I think the thought/action split can be another dangerous false dichotomy.
