what if they made a more modern version of les miserables like i dont know it might be hated but i think it would be pretty cool! like marius would be kind of like the cool guy in school like i dont know the basketball player thats super nice and intelligant and epponine could be like not exactly a gang member but she dosent exactly fit in but shes very pretty and she could be like marius best friend! and cosette can be like the transfer student that marius falls for! same story but our time!
i love this musical more than any other, and this song is, in my opinion, the best song ever from a musical. i totally understand the character of eponine, ive been in love with my friend for 3 years, and he knows but doesnt really care. i am going to try to sing this in the schools annual concert, so that he understands that my feelings are real. <3
Although Lea's voice is amazing, Samantha's portrayal of Eponine feels more accurate. Although she doesn't have the most refined voice, it does suit Eponine, since Eponine is supposed to be a daughter of the Thenardiers, and is not quite the most refined character there is. I love that sharper edge to her voice that suits Eponine's background, youth, and naivety.
"Without him, his world will go on turning/ A world that's full of happiness that I have never known"
It's not my place to question the jusdment of those who created this musical, but...thumbs up if you think so many problems would have been avoided had Marius fallen in love with his childhood friend rather than the girl he knew for a day.
@hpwolf123 Eponine in the musical is the underdog with an unrequited love and a tragic end. In the book she is a villain, a bully and a criminal who like the rest of the family ends up getting her deserved end. As for Cozette in the book she is the underdog that goes good, getting a father she never had and the prince she always dreamed of. On stage she does start to be an underdog but the adult Cozette seems to have lost the connection with it therefore seeming unfair that she gets Marius.
@hpwolf123 Not to be rude but, it's called Les Miserables not Les Joyeuse so in logic there would have to be a lot of problems. Again not to be rude, I'm just trying to clairify things.
I would rather she just pick one accent or the other, even just an American accent would be better than random picking and choosing of various accents throughout the whole song.
@hugheses Well I believe there's an explanation for that, when you sing the words with certain accent it may get difficult to hit all notes so i guess she's switching between them so that the song is more comfortable for her to do smoothly...
is it me or is her accent all over the place? the song is beautiful, she sings it well but i dont understand why some of it sounds like shes singing with an accent and not other parts.
Frances Ruffelle has forever made me look at this role as really, REALLY whiny, but Samantha does a good job here. A little more pop than I care for, but that's just a style preference - she did well.
One person is is jealous of Samantha's looks and talents. Only explanation for the dislike.
Samantha is the heartfelt Eponine who uses her love for Marius to give her strength to do what she feels she must, even when it hurts her. Lea Salonga was the tough, streetwise Eponine who was already strong and found Marius brought out her soft side. She did what he asked not realizing the pain she'd be in until after she did it.
Awe, Eponine! I love how she sounds so genuinely happy when she first starts singing about Marius! And then, on the last lyrics, you can literally hear the poor girl's heart breaking. I just want to hug her!
@javier900000 Hell no! She is so much better. I love Eponine and and she does an amazing job here, I was so sad when she sang this and when she and nick sang a little fall of rain I was crying like hell. She's amazing and I really do prefer this version of the song.
I have always thought that Eponine is the most lovable character in all of Broadway. It is no accident that in every production I have ever seen, from high school up through Broadway, the most talented actress is invariably cast as Eponine.
I have always thought that Eponine is the most lovable character in all of Broadway. It is no accident that in every production I have ever seen, from high school up through Broadway, the most talented actress is invariably cast as Eponine.
I feel so like Eponine. My family doesn't really like me, people think bad things about me that aren't true, and most alike is I'm madly in love with my best friend, but he keeps dating girls that break his heart. He barely notices I exist. Unlike Marius he probably wouldn't hold me as I died though.
@Faithee2000 It's just so hard cause I try to be a good person and do what everyone wants me to do but I'm still always yelled at and treated like a dirty rag. I'm sorry u feel this way too, no one should know what this feels like. I wish I could tell him, but I don't want to ruin our friendship. But I think of him every time I sing this song, which is a lot.
@RaiBloom4Providence If it makes you feel better, my "Marius" doesn't even try to act like I exist. At least yours must talk to you if you're friends. I could sing this in front of him and he wouldn't notice
@HorseyWitchOfTheEast I'm so sorry. Like I said, no one deserves that pain. Why can't everybody just be tuned to like one person and that person likes them back, is that too simple or something? You have to be strong and realize that God has made someone perfect for you, it could be him and he'll realize it, or you'll move on and wonder why you ever liked him. Trust me, ur parents found eachother, your grandparents, aunts, uncles, they'll all tell u it wasn't easy, but it was worth the wait.
Anyone slagging Nick off obviously didn't go to see him when he was at queens theatre, he was amazing, then he had to go back and do a huge 'pop tour' coming back to do this within a few weeks, I think the fact his voice does go back into his 'pop' voice sometimes should be forgiven. He's a hard working artist, he doesn't stop.
Nick Jonas rushed practically every line in this musical. Plus, he made everything pop sounding. He's not a bad singer, but this definitely isn't his thing.
@mefunny7 marius calls her "little boy" because he does not recognize her, and then the following line he realizes it is her, calling her "'ponine". although jonas did a very good job in that he fit the age for the part, his acting here was a little off and somwehat confusing.
I cry every time I hear this song, because I have been through the same thing. I felt like I couldn't turn to my family, friends, or anyone except for HIM in my mind. The more I told myself I was imagining him there, the more I wanted it to be true and the more upset I got, but I knew that he was happy and that we could never be... I feel for Eponine....
I love Samantha's voice, but in some parts of the song she doesn't put enough emotion and despair in it when it's suppose to be there. You have to tell she's in pain throughout the song. In this version she just belts half of it. Her voice is still amazing though. Plus Joe Jonas is a good actor in the part of Marius, but he definately has the weakest voice.
I love Lea Salonga, but I do prefer Samantha as Eponine. She better fits the age, and I think she has just as strong of a voice. However, I do also feel that she is just a touch to pretty for the role. Eponine is supposed to be on the ugly side, and pathetic.
@adeadone OH MY GOD. So jealous of you right now! I have been begging my parents for YEARS to go to see Les Mes. Why won't they take me?!?!?!?! *bangs head against wall* Why?! Why?! Why?!
I feel like this song is the "To be or not to be" of the musical theatre world. How do you make it new with so many iconic versions out there and every 13 year old girl wailing it on every corner? But I think she does an admirable job. Not exactly heart stopping, but admirable.
I think that Lea Salonga had a bigger voice and was able to sing with more control when she sang this song...but I really really like this Eponine. She seems a lot younger and sweeter when she sings it. But I think both versions are just amazing. :)
Samantha Bark's performance is splendid, not to mention she looks good on screen..but I like Lea Salonga's version as Eponine, she's still my favorite Eponine, far stronger emotions when she sang On My Own..!
i dont know why but i just dont love her voice, i could definately NOT sing as well as her haha but i just dont love it. she hits all the notes but theres something about her voice that just seems off to me.... sorry...
I honestly love this girl, and her rendition. Hope she's considered for Eponine's role in the motion picture. She's got a better voice than any Eponine before her, and that includes Lea Michele.
love this scene where marius and eponine r talking about the letter to cosette lolz its sad but good nick did a great job as marius and samantha as eponine
i really dislike that she changes her accent while she's singing. for some of it she has the usual chessey american accent then at some parts she has a cockney london accent.
I like this version of the song, because you can hear the emotion and power she's putting behind her voice, and facial expression on stage... it's truly a beautiful song, to go with a beautiful show.
I love how Eponine sounds all cheery and playful during 1:24 - 1:39. Samantha Barks does such a marvelous job with On My Own. She's my favorite Eponine. Thank you so much for uploading all of these fantastic videos, sadly we don't have the DVD in the US yet. :(
@scullen08 I so agree, was so happy to see she still had a part in the story. Sadly though many of the actors were not as good here as in the 10th anniversary concert, I miss that performance.

"Get out 'Ponine, you might get shot." Way to jinx it Ni-- I mean Marius :p

I honestly love this girl, and her rendition. Hope she's considered for Eponine's role in the motion picture. She's got a better voice than any Eponine before her, and that includes Lea Michele.
Bravo.

@BrowdwayBeauty90: he must of spotted a fly. Obviously to him a fly is nicer than Samantha Barks. LOL

Oh, man. Sam really made me remember how sad this scene is

Where is Nick Jonas always looking? It certainly isn't at the characters on stage....

@BroadwayBeauty90 Most of them don't look at each other when they sing...they have to sing into the microphone straight on.

i really dislike that she changes her accent while she's singing. for some of it she has the usual chessey american accent then at some parts she has a cockney london accent.

i always like her ever since the beginning, a very nice performance for one so young

I like this version of the song, because you can hear the emotion and power she's putting behind her voice, and facial expression on stage... it's truly a beautiful song, to go with a beautiful show.

She's so effing cute from 1:35 ♥ And her voice on 'On my own' is incredible. She's my favourite Eponine. <3

I love how Eponine sounds all cheery and playful during 1:24 - 1:39. Samantha Barks does such a marvelous job with On My Own. She's my favorite Eponine. Thank you so much for uploading all of these fantastic videos, sadly we don't have the DVD in the US yet. :(

@EmilyLovesErikPOTO You're very welcome :) And I agree, she's brilliant, she's my second favourite, first is always going to be Lea Salonga.
scullen08 1 year ago 45
@scullen08 agreed, Lea Salonga will always be the #1 Eponine ;P
firelilyxxx 1 year ago
@scullen08 I so agree, was so happy to see she still had a part in the story. Sadly though many of the actors were not as good here as in the 10th anniversary concert, I miss that performance.
