Since both triangles have the same angles they could alternate positions but when u put the bigger triangle at the top then u leave a big gap at the bottom so the 2 L shapes are not long enough to fill their original place. Is easier to under stand it than to explain it, not that is hard to explain. I think my explanation was more quirky than the actual puzzle... lol.
It doesn't really require all that much math to think about. Really, you could just say that it doesn't take up as much space in one position because of the shape of the other.
The black lines create some discrepancy about the actual size of the triangle's building blocks. If you look carefully, the top triangle's hypotenuse is translated up compared to the hypotenuse of the bottom triangle.( look at end of video)
I'm posting this comment to clarify one definition. People have been commenting that a triangle is not a polygon, when in fact is is a TYPE of polygon.
Defenition of Triangle:
A triangle is one of the basic shapes of geometry: a polygon with three corners or vertices and three sides or edges which are line segments. A triangle with vertices A, B, and C is denoted ABC.
hello friend , after 3 months happen to read your comment... :D well when i am saying that the big triangle isnt in fact a triangle , its a polygon , this statement doesnt denies that a polygon can be a triangle , but denies that it can be a triangle the shape we see in the "paradox" ..... take care
i know the answer :P - the so called big one triangle with the missing part - well it isnt a triangle at all! its a poligon , when i saw it for first time i though omg this cant be real lol
The red traingle has 8 squares base, 3 squares high. It's hipotenuse would be described following f(x) = 3/8 x
The WHOLE "triangle" follow the same hipotenuse rule, but istead of having 8 squares long it has 13. But 13 x 3/8 = 4.875 and not 5, which means that's not a triangle but something that resembles to a triangle.
The thing you point out, but don't actually state is that the three triangles are not "similar" triangles (an elementary concept in geometry). If the three triangles are not similar, then you can't overlay angles like he does.
Oh btw, I did the whole area thing at my first look and knew SOMETHING had to be wrong, cause at the start the sum of the iindividual areas (using the A = 1/2(b*h) rule ) didn't match the are of the whole triangle. Blew my mind.
Not as much a mystery as it is an illusion. If our eyes were more accurate, we'd be able to see right away that those two smaller triangles have different angles, and as "stacase" said the overall shape isn't even a triangle.
The two small triangles are not the same shape as the large "Triangle" or each other. In fact the large "Triangle" is not a triangle, it is a four sided polygon. It just looks at first glance like a triange but it's not.
Count out the sides of each of the triangles including the large "Triangle" and you will see that they are not the same shape. That is to say, the angles are not the same.
try looking at the triangls as if they were rectangls and take acout of the big rectangle that it fits in and the emty space tottle

you put the red triangle on top when it goes on the bottom

the line runing from red tip to the blue tip is not a straight line
slope ratio is diffrent
Red: 8/3 = 2.6 recuring
Blue: 5/2 = 2.5
this makes the forth point of the polygon the point of red organge and blue intersect.
first "triangle" is like a car spoiler
second is like a hill slope

=)) omg so much explanations
the simplest way to bust this is the next solution:
the are of triangle is not equal with the sum of the areas of each piece => the figure is not a triangle

you're modifying the red triangle. Look in the two pictures again, the red triangle is smaller in the second picture.

Knowing it wouldn't fail I made a quick sketch and ran the numbers on a calculator:
2(sqrt(2^2+5^2)*sqrt(3^2+8^2)*sin(tan^-1(2/5) - tan^-1(3/8) )/2) = 1, big mystery :P
