Danzr Von Thai I proclaim heartily that Leonard Cohen is the closest visage of itinerant troubadourism that we have been gifted with which puts John Lennon, Tracy Chapman, Cat Stevens, Jennifer Newberry, etc. down the list with Bob Dylan sucking like a barnacle on the hind teat. --{RIP Jack Powers}
Like a broken beast I still walk through the dream of America - staggering, still hoping, still crying, still open to joy!
There is a pain in dreaming, in the real dreaming of genuine dreams that cannot be salved by platitudes, that cannot be appeased by jugglers and vendors of purely material illusion. So please let us carry on, through the pain of spiritual aspiration to reach the truth, the genuine elisium of the spirit.
Well I heard this because I watched "the boat that rocked" and heard "so long Marianne" and Hallelujah hit the charts with 3 different versions at 1,2 & 4. So I thought it was time to give Leonard the time he deserves. . . up to now. . . every second!!
This kind of song is what happens when a poet tries to sing for the first time in his life. The lyrics are for the Neville Brothers to make it a huge hit but this singing sounds way too depressing.
@lostkeys78 Never saw "Lost." I was about to say that I generally disapprove of secondary sources taking a free ride on good music. But then I realized that it was Robert Altman's "McCabe and Mrs. Miller" that introduced me to Cohen in the first place. Still, a lot of these shows and movies are created by bankrupt whores.
Cohen again in the spotlight of another great modern movie/television show. I hope you all remember Natural Born Killers! Anyways, for all you LOST fans (like me) Cohen wrote this song while on a greek island called Hydra, and it was finished in an apartment in Los Angeles. All for his love. Enough said!
@21ballack lost was a complete borrowing from a 5,000 (maybe 6,000) year old fable. Cohen hasn't been around that long...i am, however, pretty sure that this jolie petite chanson goes back to the 60s.
...yes, he looks like a young Al Pacino more than Hoffman, or a mix of both......

k.d. lang sings a beautiful version of this on her album "Hymn of the 49th Parallel" but I like the rawness of Cohen's singing.
