Some of the Americans are sooo thick.. go get a life. Why is it that only 10% of you have passports to travel? Mind you we don't want all of you coming over to the UK... Do some research you thick arse!
@skyservice78 "Some of the Americans are sooo thick.. go get a life. " hey wait, I'm a anglophile who actually recognizes that the British pretty much DID invent everything .....
It may have been a crazy 60's British invention but these Mountbatten class hovercraft worked well for 35 years and still were faster than anything else across the English Channel. And in fact because of easy and speedy loading and unloading is still faster than today's 'Le Shuttle' Chennel Tunnel car/train service. It was also safe and great fun to ride! Greatly missed, the Seacats are not a touch on it and take forever to load and unload!
Went on this when I was 7-8 yrs old. Remember thinking the passenger seating arrangement was just like a plane. Only difference was we drove the family car on board. We crossed in gale force 7 winds, everytime I went to take a sip from my drink, my arm would raise 2 feet in the air as we hit a big wave.
yES SUCH A CRAZY INVENTION FROM US BRITS I GUESS THAT IS WHY YOUR MARINES USE THE SAME DESIGN AS A BASIS FOR THE LCAC AS FOR CONCORDE BOEING AND LOCKHEED TRIED TO BUILD ONE AND COULD NOT OH AND JUST A REMINDER ANOTHER CRAZY BRIT FRANK WHITTLE INVENTED THE JET ENGINE EVER HEARD OF THAT CRAZY INVENTION

Crazy British invention like the concorde! At least us British have some guts when it comes to inventions, unlike the yanks! These hovercraft were absolutely awesome especially SWIFT which I went on in 1987 as a 9 year old!
I've been a hovercraft crossing but I don't know what model no. it was, I needed to cross the channel and at the time it was cheap. my comment on it..... quite noisy, quite choppy( you couldn't walk around in it, the noise was like a wshing machine on full spin and you're inside it. The crossing was quite fast however not very comfortable as the craft would smash into a wave the water beneath would go away leaving a space and the hovercraft would drop into it giving you a very strange sensation.
Its a shame they stopped running the SRN4, i have only ever seen them once when i was a small lad on a day visit to Dover with my mum & dad and sadly i will never get the chance to travel on one or see them in real life again, its a good job that ther is video footage on you tube so i saved a few to my favourites.
Fantastic video! Swift was always my favourite... There aren't that many videos of the SRN4 Mk II so fantastic memoire. Any more where that came from?
... and designed the airframe and wing using the data we had researched in the 50's before the US 'borrowed' it in return for an "exchange of data" which we never saw. The full name of Concorde is actually "Aerospatiale-BAC Concorde" in homage to the two firms that designed it. Search for 'Vulcan Bomber' and you will see where Concorde came from
CRAP - Concorde was more British than French. The engines were developed from the TSR2 - an awesome plane way ahead of it's time cancelled by the Labour government to please the Yanks.
Awesome!!

Ah the memories - I just noticed that was "Swift" that used to operate out of Ramsgate, the other one was called "Sure".

Yeah, a crazy gadget - like the viewfinder on a camcorder - so difficult to steer.

then the brits gave the jet engine to the soviets to make the MiG-15.....
They also built a couple of battleships for the Japanese and showed them how to make fire control computers.

The SRN4 and other British hovercraft were the basis for the US marine hovercraft of today.
The SRN4 is still the mighty one!!!

Two cross channel SRN4s are parked at the hovercraft muesum in Lee on Solent. Along with loads of other classic hovers.
