All your work is for nothing because you sawed off the plant in two places and left some of the root in the ground. If that is Himalayan blackberry you are removing, it will re-sprout from those pieces you left. Really, all you've done is worked up a sweat and made it mad.

My opinion is that it was very successful because I removed a giant sticker bush by hand, quicker and easier than with any other hand tool. I agree that the blackberries will re-sprout from severed roots. Almost all invasive bushes will do that, especially if the root end is exposed to air. All invasive bush removal requires follow-ups no matter how you initially remove or kill the bush.

@colinml2 You will get re-growth in areas you have cleared from at least 3 sources. One, as you say, is from leftover root ends. The other 2 are from the seeds that the bush deposited while alive and seeds that birds pooped out. For blackberries I recommend you go out with a weed whip the next spring and whack off the new shoots. If you do that a couple times, they will die. After that you will need to service the area every 2 years or so to prevent re-infestation from birds.
