I am a fellow of Corpus Christi College, Oxford, and for this woman to describe either of our classical institutions as Ivy League is insulting, Red Brick? Yes, Russel Group? Yes, but not Ivy league, it is a disgrace
why would this dreadful narrator call oxbridge ivy league??? and as for the rest of it, british humour clearly goes over her tiny little american head
Oh they would focus on the paedophila part wouldn't they? But totally in the wrong way. It's subverting our expectations. We hear the phrase "child molestation" and we recoil in horror, yet by the end of the film, he's not a paedophile but a person. A loved character. And he ends up teaching them the most important lesson: "Pass the parcel. That's sometimes all you can do."
the Ivies are a big deal in the states, they are the pinnacle of prestige, so it makes sense to try and draw that parallel to an audience that might not know about oxford and cambridge, just as some english might not know about cornell, dartmouth, etc.
i couldnt get past the first 12 seconds of this video due to the voice over. the english are sensationally patriotic so having such a stereotypical american voice over was a silly idea. it's british so don't try and americanise it
This has to be one of my favourite films. It's also my favourite film to show an American how to speak ENGLISH properly.
I love reminding them they speak ENGlish and that there is no such thing as a language called AMERICAN. If such a language existed it would only be fluent by speaking with your mouth full.
You seem to have a lot of anger inside. You should come out of the closet, it will relieve some of the stress caused by ignoring your true identity. Don't worry, your friends and family probably know your gay. I'm sure they will support you.
@zoopezoop So she should have said "prestigious" or "advanced" instead of Ivy League when describing Oxford and Cambridge for the American audience. Really, why are there so many pretentious popinjays in England?
I suppose the presenter meant Oxbridge are the equivalent of Ivy League. Oxford and Cambridge universities are comprised of their colleges, by the way - the colleges belong to their respective universities. This is an unusual system for the UK - only the universities of Durham and London also share this college system.
Ivy League? Samuel BarNETT? What on earth was that narrator on, Benylin? No wonder celebrities hate doing interviews if that's the quality of understanding the interviewers have. Sheesh.
Aside from the sexual business, Hector is a great teacher. He uses one of the long-dead techniques of education, memorisation, so imaginatively that the students relish it.
I was forced to memorise loads German poetry by my German teacher--I name her because she was a great teacher, Elena DeRuchie. As a result, there are great swathes of Goethe, Heine and Schiller that I can recite now 50 years later. Later I tried to memorize English poetry and couldn't. Memorisation is easy for youth.
wtf is that annoying women on about -- ivy leauge collages in oxford and cambridge xx piss of u annoying women -- stupid dumb americ, we no wt hardvard and yale are probscuz we r bombarded wiv americain crap (nt all crap jst most ovi is) well i reckon those americans culd benifit from some raw, hard hitting british cinema xx grrrrrrrr -_-
I actually didn't understand most of what you said...or at least had to really concentrate to work it out. I don't think you can really criticise her from being a 'stupid dumb americ' when you use ' x x ' as a full stop.

IVY LEAGUE....IVY LEAGUE???? Give me a break, this movie is SO far removed from anything American, why even bother to try to associate it at all? Great movie all about 'as it was" in the elite stream of English education, PRIOR to comprehensive education. (remember grammar school)
She is trying to explain to ignorant Americans what significance of Oxford and Cambridge for Brits. It's the equivalent of going to Harvard and Yale: elite education.
I'm sorry, but since when did Oxford and Cambridge belong to the Ivy League?! I don't know, or care, who the narrator is, but seriously, add something vaguely intelligent if you add anything at all...

Does anyone know the brand of the satchel/school bag Dakin carries in the film? I've been looking for a proper one and like the look and size of his.

Why do Americans have to ruin everything?

@asathesh Yes like Sylvia Plath ruining Ted Hughes. (or was it vice versa?)

Ivy League, Is to get the American audience interested in the Movie. It is in America where the film will pay for it's self.
GB can stand on her own reputation ! She sure does not need somebody to stand up and say HOW DARE THEY.

ivy league?? stop trying to compare english schools to american, harvard has nothing on oxford or cambridge, or even UCL for that matter.
AviatorAndyK 1 year ago
@AviatorAndyK To be fair, UCL isn't as good as Ivy Leagues now is it?
stylishsid 1 year ago
@stylishsid as good?? They're far better. Most ivy league schools are private, which is a total joke, english are public.

I laughed so hard at that. The "Ivy League" isn't mentioned once in the play or film. I suppose something was lost in translation.
