Oh they would focus on the paedophila part wouldn't they? But totally in the wrong way. It's subverting our expectations. We hear the phrase "child molestation" and we recoil in horror, yet by the end of the film, he's not a paedophile but a person. A loved character. And he ends up teaching them the most important lesson: "Pass the parcel. That's sometimes all you can do."

the Ivies are a big deal in the states, they are the pinnacle of prestige, so it makes sense to try and draw that parallel to an audience that might not know about oxford and cambridge, just as some english might not know about cornell, dartmouth, etc.

This has to be one of my favourite films. It's also my favourite film to show an American how to speak ENGLISH properly.

I love reminding them they speak ENGlish and that there is no such thing as a language called AMERICAN. If such a language existed it would only be fluent by speaking with your mouth full.

Oxford and Cambridge universities are comprised of their colleges, by the way - the colleges belong to their respective universities. This is an unusual system for the UK - only the universities of Durham and London also share this college system.

Aside from the sexual business, Hector is a great teacher. He uses one of the long-dead techniques of education, memorisation, so imaginatively that the students relish it.

I was forced to memorise loads German poetry by my German teacher--I name her because she was a great teacher, Elena DeRuchie. As a result, there are great swathes of Goethe, Heine and Schiller that I can recite now 50 years later. Later I tried to memorize English poetry and couldn't. Memorisation is easy for youth.
