Jason was a great guy but the least versatile player out of the three.

Rob is an amazing player any by far the best musician in the band right now. As James said he makes the band sound better and there is no doubt about it.

Cliff Burton had the looks, and had an amazing bass skill and sound that was by far superior to many metal bass players to this day.

Jason Newsted looked like a total bad ass on stage for Metallica, but I didn't feel like he was the best bassist.

Rob Trujillo has a nice sound away from all of them, making him unique, but to me He doesn't look too special on stage.

There is really one bass player wich influenced Metallica's music and style and this man was Clifford Lee Burton. And there is nothing more to it. No matter what you believe, Jason and Bob are just bass players, providing basslines and looking at James and Lars for aproval. They are great, proffessionnal musicians but they simply never had cliff's musical theory knowledge and talent. Listen to Orion and it should be enough to back my point. And, he was cut short of reaching his full potential.

Cliff is rough, hard edge, fast, and very technical, mostly what Metallica was back then. then Jason had Killer vocals and aggressive bass sounds, with that funky kind of metal, like in Black album, Load, reload. And then theres Robbert, he's both of them in one. minus the killer vocals. Robbert seems like the only bassist fit to replace Cliff, and the fit time to replace him was during St.anger

Although I can't see how anybody would think Jason is the best, they never turned up his bass loud enough so you could hear it in the mix. The subwoofers in my 1000 watt car stereo are bareloy moving with the CD's he plays on. Then Death Magnetic and WOW, they found the volume pot for the bass!! Jason screwed up, you don't go from packed 70,000 seat stadiums to bars and say "ALLLLLright."

Jason wasn't that good of a player, he was just in Metallica when they were putting out some of their best albums like ...And Justice For All, but now that Robert has worked with Metallica with writing and what not they put out Death Magnetic which is the best Metallica album since 1989 easily.
