  • @enkoremakeup. Hey. I am really interested in trying this. My hands shake so bad I keep spilling my makeup. I am wondering if this will work on the bare escentials makeup. Also they have now come out with pressed eyeshadows and I did not see any of the ingredients you listed. Do you know how their binding their eyeshadow?? Thanks in advanced.

  • no wonder my nyx pigments never stayed put... i used mac fix+ instead

    would it make a difference?

  • Will* that work or will it just damage the rest of the palette that isn't broken?

  • I bought these shimmery pigments from the 99 cents store n I want to practice with them to press. U didn't mention what u were spraying on the powder n what temperature to set the oven.. Also I have a 120 neutral palette that I purchased n received broken. I watched another video where they used 70% alcohol n just pressed it with a dime n some cloth, wit

  • ..Koren...where is the video..that tells me whats in the spray bottle u are using...The materials and prep video?

...Is that an alcohol and mixing medium mix...?..

    Thank you..Very helpful...there aren't any videos..on pressing mattes..again thanks..:)

  • Hi Enkore, I am really desperate. I need your help. I dropped my mac studio fix and it broke into pieces, it's almost brand new. I try fixing it by mixing it with 70% isopropyl alcohol and press it but when it dried its all cracked up again. What am I doing wrong? Please help me!!

  • So this method also works for shattered MAC MSFs correct?

  • lol if i minimise the window, it sounds like a cooking show.

  • Wow! Yours came out so perfect. I love ur method. hey, I have never pressed eyeshadows before. I was wondering after the eyeshadow is pressed how is the pigmentation and the eyeshadow application? Thanks!!

  • can i use this method for the ELF loose mineral eyeshadows? can this method be used for shimmery eyeshadows too?

  • it's my first time pressing stuff, but is it alright to use coastal scents micas and pressing medium?

  • Korin what do I do? So I already mixed my minerals and put it in the pan and some of the minerals that I used dried up fast enough so I can press it but some of the others one are still cakey when I touch it. Should I wait overnight to press them or do something else? Is there anything I can do?

  • Wouldn't it be better if you use a dropper instead of the spray? :S

  • could you use tablespoon instead of teaspoon? for me one eyeshadow pan isnt enough..

  • LifeSaver Koren!!! I'm soo late on this, but I'm so Happy now!!

  • How long do you have to wait until the oven reaches room temperature?

  • I love how you talk koren :)

    *Rocksterize* makeup tutorials

  • where'd u learn all this stuff?

  • whats in the mix? i used acohol and it didnt work..

  • alcohol isnt good for anything that you are going to put on your face. there is another part to this video, you should watch it.

  • Can you do the same thing with any pigment or if I use this method with a pigment thats not matte will it not work?

  • I tried this with a mineral foundation, it worked great, but then i tried it with my bare minerals fauz tan and the powder like.. separated from the mixing mediumm... any tips?

  • is Face & Body Mixing Medium the same mixing medium that you made?????

  • omfg i just broke my mac mineralize skinfinish (medium/natural and shimmer)

    I FREAKED OUTTTTT

i crashed the broken pieces and mixed it with biosilk,

i'm going to try to press it now:(

  • so for simple matte shadows do you just stop after the second pressing? you dont need to bake?

  • I think it is easier to mix inside of a plastic bag instead of a jar.

  • Has anybody tried this yet??? What is the color pay off like? I really want to try it but I can only find the MAC mixing medium for $30 and I want to be sure it works before I buy it! THanks

  • What is the difference between pressing pigments and mineralized powders? Did I miss something here? :)

What is the 'mixture'? Alcohol? Mixing medium? Water and glycerin? Please help. thanks :)

  • He has a video on homeade mixing medium

  • watch the first video on PREPARING and its the Mac mixing medium for face and body mixed with equal parts bottled water...

  • what is the mixture? alcohol?

  • will the new shadows break?

  • Koren is coastal scents mixing medium okay to use for this...will it work with the hole baking process??

    thanks!

    xx

  • Hiya!

Is it possible to do this with mineralized/loose powder eyeshadows?

Also, could I use glycerin and water for the spray?

  • Of course it's possible to press mineral power and eye shadows (: The only thing with that thought is that unless they are pressed very hard, they may be a bit powdery even when pressed.

Also, I'm not sure if water will work, but I use Opti-Free; something that is used for contacts. Many people use alcohol but I feel more comfortable with use Opti-Free since I know that it's safe for my eyes. Hope this helped! :D

  • Thank you!!

Then perhaps Visine would work too?

  • No problem! :D I'm pretty sure it will! (:

Of course you'll want to have a paper towel or napkin under whatever you're pressing your pigment with so that it will collect the extra liquid since it's not alcohol and it wont dry. ^^

  • Yep! Thanks again. =D

  • i have a question, koren. carrying around loose mineral foundation is a pain, so i was wondering if they could be pressed (with either alcohol or a mixing medium). thank you kindly.

  • can u use a piece of plastic when pressing the first time , instead of a shirt?

  • is there a special method to pressing minerals such as the eye colors from pure luxe?

  • Is pressed mineral powder as good as loose mineral powder in the result?

Or for wich reason is mineral powder never pressed all ready... sorry I'm a little stupid i think :]

  • the result is the same, its just less messy pressed than in loose form. Mineral in loose form is pure mineral ingredients, once pressed, youre adding stuff to it like silcones to bind.

  • with using mm, how long can we keep our eye shadow after that? Years?

  • yeah about 3 years, in loose form, they dont expire. So thats another advantage of keeping it in loose form.

  • thanks, 3 years is not a lot for me because I don't make up a lot. So really I think keeping it in loose form is better for me, unless I press just a lttle bit.

Does face and body mm expire? How long can we keep a jar?

  • @EnKoreMakeup eyeshadow expires?

  • I am afraid of using alcohol because I am very sensitive.

With mineral make up would EZR be a good dupe for body mixing medium? I've got one. Because I am looking for smthg cheaper. Any idea?

    Thanks.

  • For regular pigments; use the alcohol method. For matte pigments; use this method. What about the MAC metal pigments like Gold, Platinum, Silver... etc..?? How do I press those?

  • alcohol works great on those.

  • Dear Koren..i am abit confused. To make my own eyeshadow should i use alcohol or mix medium? Are there types of eyeshadows that uses either alcohol or mix medium to mix?

  • depends on the loose powder you are using - if it mineral shadow loose, you need the mixing medium method. As well as matte pigments and finely milled powders. For corse powders non-matte like most MAC pigments, you use alcohol.

  • But, ain't that mixing medium the same as the homemade one? So why would I buy expensive mixing medium when I can make it myself?

  • And, if I buy that sample thingy, how many pans can I press with it?

  • no...the binder is made with ingredients that you cant find over the counter. you cant really make a homemade one without those ingredients.

  • no, the homemade one is just glycerin & water - Face & Body mixing medium has dimethecone and cyclomethicone which binds mineral powders.

  • what liquid mixture did you use, u did not say lol?

  • MAc face & Body Mixing Medium - I mentioned it in Part 1 - called Preparing to Press Minerals.

  • what mixing medium do you use?

  • its a mixture of MAC face and body mixing meduim and purified water.

  • I tried this with my Bare Minerals except I pressed it in an empty blush pan so my Kabuki brush would fit in it. Then I converted a Mac quad pallette and out it in. It worked perfectly!

  • You and PURSEBUZZ are both amazing!!!!!!!!!!

  • you should zoom =(

  • oh your good, your real good lol

  • because, not all mineralized powders are pressed! there are ppl out there that like the coverage of loose mineralized powders as opposed to regular foundation.. this tutorial are for those who hate the messiness that comes along w/ loose mineralized powder..

  • hey Koren.. will this work with NYX and shespace pigments? iv tried pressing them with alcohol but after they dried as soon as i touched them they went back to being dusty pigments :(

  • yes, this is the method you want to use on those.

  • i was wondering can you use water to press? thats wht my cousin said

  • you can't use water because it doesn't have a binding agent and the poweder will not stick together

  • hi koren My Studio fix Powder Broke yesterday I am just devestated. Is ther any way to press it ?

  • Just wondering... why do you have to do it in 2 sets?

  • its the best way to really pack-press minerals as they are super fine powders. So doing it in 2 sets is the way to assure that its well pressed.

  • thx for the details:) HK mac pro do not have the mixing medium, I searched high and low , i failed 3 batched :(

    1st: alcohol alone, 2nd : alcohol + glycerine

    3rd: glycerine+water

    none works!!!

it is hard to press mineral foundation i used BE, i like the concept but hate powder fly everywhere

  • i don't have an oven at home, is there any alternatives to dry the mixture?

  • its optional - you san simply just let it dry for a day or two, if you dont have an oven.

  • Thanks, Koren! I also wanted to let people know that I've used an ice pick to do the mixing, and it works quite well (and the large handle makes it easy on the hands). I found that easier than using a bobby pin.

  • I absolutely LOVE your videos and tutorials! Thanks so much for doing them.

One of the benefits of using minerals is that they don't "expire." Does pressing them change that since a binder is added? If so, how long would they be safe to use after pressing? Also, would there be an expiration date if using the alcohol method? Thanks!

  • hey mandy - for the most part, the binder just acts temporarily, just to help the particles adhere to each other, then it dries. Alcohol dries faster. So, minerals still maintains its no-expiry characteristics even when pressed.

  • the reason we bake it is so the liquid dries out faster right?? can we just put it under the sun??

cuz i pressed mines with coastal scents pressing medium..n its been 2 days n its not completely dry yet =/

  • the heat causes the particles to expand and holds to each other with the help of the binder. Its an option really, but you get better results.

  • where did you get that microspatula? mac has a similar one, but not THAT small? please inform

  • Conema Secrets have stainless steel spatula. You can probably also google it to find outher resources. i got mine from discovery channel store at a mall.

  • hey thanx, so much for responding, i actually forgot i asked, but yeah, i actually did find the spats on cinema secrets, really good site, just ordered a yaby palette from there, cannot wait to receive it, i'm redoing my kit, so looking into palettes, takes up less space and less time, i use all mac products, but want to see what else out there is as good or even better...i enjoy watching you, your like a celeb in youtubelololol

  • oops - thats Cinema Secrets

  • Koren you are absolutely wonderful. Your videos and tips are so helpful and entertaining. Thank you.

  • Hi Koren, Just wondering if I can use this method on my MAC blot powder or do I use your pressing e/s, pigments method. I dropped my compact and the powder is a mess now. If I do use this method, do I have to put it in the oven? Can I just let it air dry? Thanks!

  • sorry for the late response, been trying to catch up - any way, compact Blot Powders are Matte, so this is the best method to repress those.

  • if you use a regular compact pan then would you do this in the same way or would it take about 5 mixes

  • hey Koren i just had a question...

instead of using a metal pan like the one you used, (i'm talking about the one that you pressed the make up into, and then put into the oven)

could i use a plastic jar to press it in?

and what happens if i don't bake it? (in case the plastic will melt in the oven)

  • Hey Koren,

I was wondering what else can you use MAC's face and body mixing medium for?

    Thanks :)

  • hey vfy - you can use it to create custom made foundations, lotions, and titianium dioxide to it and its a great sunblock, and you can add mineral foundation to it and make body bronzers great for this summer. You can also use it as a basic mixing medium for eyeshadows. Its also great for cake makeup instead of using water.

  • can u press nyx chrome e/s? it looks mineralized?

  • yes you can

  • I saw there is a method to make homemade mixing medium. One part glycrin and one part wate. Could this be used to press minerals?

  • yes you can use that - some have tried, but i like using mixing medium with dimethicone for pressing mins - if you can find that just add 1 part to the mixture.

  • where do you get the tin pan you put it in and also the mixing jar? just asking thanks

  • the tin pan you can get from starsmakeuphaven (dot com) the mixing jar, you can pretty much use anything, i like using empty MAC pigment jars.

  • how long should u pre-heat the oven for??

can u just drip the mixing medium into the jar instead of spraying??

  • just preheat it until it reaches the set temperature. you can use a dropper bottle and use the medium in drops insted of spraying that works too.

  • i was just wondering will it be the same when you press Everyday Minerals? thanks!!!!

  • hey skwid - yes, this same procedure.

  • I know very little about make and I was just wondering why you press them?

  • hey lizzie - for the most part, it simply just makes it a lot less messy. Loose mineral powders are so fine milled that it can get messy with powders all over the place. So a lot of people press them instead.

  • Hi Koren~

First of all, you are amazing and your videos are sooo helpful! After I watch the mineralized pressing series, I want to know if I can use this process on Bare Minerals powers. Can you please enlighten me on this?

  • hey babywuu- yes, this is the method you want to use on Bare Minerals.

  • Hi Koren,

Could you tell me where you got the mixing tool you're using to mix the minerals and press them into the pan. It looks like a cuticle pusher to me.

Thanks and I love your videos!

    Taryn

  • oh, its called a Stainless Steel Micro Spatula. I got it from the Discovery Channel Store. You can google and see where you can get one around ya.

  • Can I just say I love your intro song (and of course your tuts). lol I was definitely humming it last weekend.

  • hi Enkore! i recently broke my aquadisiac eyeshadow and tried to press it back together. but when i looked on the cloth i used and the inside rims of the eyeshadow, it was lime gree and yellow. is this a bad sign? =S

  • how was it when it dried?? - its not necessary bad, its just when you press and theres still alcohol, you filter out some of the colorants, so thats what youre seeing. But once its pressed and dried, it should be ok.

  • Hi, can you tell me please what is the difference between loose powder and compact one? Thx, your vids are great! :)

  • hey Dahnah - for the most part, the ingredients is the same. Pressed ones can also sometime be baked using a terra cotta mold like MAC skinfinishes. Otherwise, the only difference is that pressed is less messy than loose.

  • hey koren!

Great video! Just wondered if this method will work with the coastal scents make up ingredients like the mica powders, glitter powders, oxides and pigments?

    Thanks xxx

  • only mica powders - you cant press glitters pure as they change colors, and you dont want to press pure iron oxides.

  • hey koren, I was wondering would this method work for MAC metal pigments like rose gold, silver, copper, etc? Thanks

  • he tonic - the 'alcohol' method is better for those.

  • not sure if anyones asked you. but can i use my fix+ to do this with my broken studio fix? u said to to this method but i wanted to see if i can use my fix+ instead of going and getting the face and body mixing

    thanx koren you awesome!!

  • I tried using fix+ before and the produt dries back to its loose form, and Fix+ contains Arganine which is a pH Balancer, and somehow that changed the color a bit. So, I have better luck using mixing mediums.

  • ok thanx Koren!! ill go get the mixing medium =0) xoxo have a good day!

  • Hey EnKore, I was just wondering why you dilute the F&B mixing medium ? DO you know what would happen if it was used undiluted ?

  • hey Andromeda - I find it too thick if not diluted, and diluting it also thins out the Silicones in the mixing medium. How did your pressing turn out??

  • ohhhh koren ....i dont know what to do now ....starsmakeuphaven doesnt sale the sample face and body medium anymore....where else can i get it...there are no mac stores around me and i looked on ebay and there are only a couple and they are selling for 34 dollars ...help me

  • hey Shy - email starsmakeuphaven and ask when they will stock it again. Im sure its a popular product now, that they will probably have it back on stock soon. Email and ask.

  • sorry if anyone asked this before but why would i need to do this to my minerals. i have an extensive set of eyeshadows blushers and foundation powders. does it make the make up last longer or make the colours brighter. it seems like an awful lot of trouble just in case you drop some. really i could replace the dropped item for less than all the stuff i need to buy for baking the minerals. anyway like most of your videos not to sure about trays for the jars i cant beleive you use them .

  • you dont NEED to use the stuff that he uses..

an easier way of doing this is:

instead of getting seperate little pots for every mixture you get an eyeshadow pan (if your pressing them into a pallette then the pallette will have eyeshadow pans in it you just need to take them out)

then do what he did (mixing+pressing) but instead of putting them in the oven you can make a hair straightener hot then turn it off so it cools and put the eyeshadow pan resting on the ceramic plate on it! VOILA!

  • I love this!! Great!!!

  • Dear Koren,

You are simply brilliant! I've had issues with my loose mineral powders getting EVERYWHERE! This is a great solution to get these eyeshadows in containers that will stay put!

    Thanks!

  • I actually use RARE minerals night treatment by Bare Escentuals for foundation...would i press it with this method or the alcohol method?

  • hey bbc - yes, this method.

  • Hello! Simple question: have you successfully tried this method with NYX Pigment (Loose Pearl Eye Shadow)? I want to do with mine, but I'm a newbie! Thx!

  • hi Victoria - YES, this is the best way to press NYX loose pearls as they are finely milled.

  • I jsut tried this, its drying now actually, drop me a message tomorrow if you want and Ill let you know how it went.

  • Thanx Enkore.. You gave me an idea for how I could fix my solid eyeshadows that I accidently dropped and turned into powder eyeshadow.. Oops.

Good news. Pressing the loose eyeshadow with a coin, put it back in shape and I no longer have eyeshadow everywhere when trying to open the eyeshadow :) Thanx for the tip!

  • Will this work for a loose beauty powder I have from mac?

  • hey sweetea- Yes, those are very finely milled, and this is the ideal way to press those.

  • I respect ypu.

  • It was studied. Thank you. Irespect you.

  • hi enkore, I presss my edm min. with alcohol it did,t work out. I saw that i have to use mac face and body mix. medium but they don,t sell this in holland no pro stores. Do you know some one who can buy it for me and will sent it to the netherlands. (I pay ofcourse) Do you know a solution for me. Hope you can help me. thanks anita.

  • hey anita - buy it from Starsmakeuphaven (dot) com - they will ship to netherlands. Check out the other stuff there too while youre browsing the site.

  • what does the mixing medium consist of? can i use rubbing alcohol to bind it?

  • hey cinderellasCurse - the f&b mixing medium is dimethecone based, which is what binds mineralized and fine-milled powders. Alcohol will not bind it. It will just dry back to its loose powder state.

  • hey i just wanted to know if it is safe to press loose eye shadows with nail polish remover

  • Oh no no no - if its strong enough to remove nail polish, it will cause damage to the powder, and not to mention damage to your skin.

  • okiedokie lol thats what i thought... but do you have any household suggestions for pressing powders? because i dont usually have alcohol

  • i heard people used Vodka with success.

  • uh im a little young for having vodka LOL im 11 any other suggestions?

  • oops! hahaha - yeah your best bet is just getting rubbing alcohol. Its less than $1 for a bottle.

  • Ok thanks :) i'll ask my mom if she has any but i doubt she will... i will get some this weekend though. Good price too thanks!!

  • what?! vodka?! sweet! hahah

  • hey i just wanted to know if it is safe to press loose eye shadows with nail polish remover

  • Hey I was wondering what would this be a good process for pressing MAC pigments??

  • hey carzydiva - I have a video on pressing MAC Pigments. Look it up in my vids list, and Ihope that helps ya. Look for Pressing Pigments - its in 2 parts.

  • Thank you Koren!! I watched the Vids and I ended up with B E A Utiful Pressed pigs!! Now I just have to get my hands on a M.A.C. Palette!! Anyone has one they want to get rid of ?? lol

  • Koren - thanks so much for this great tutorial! I have nearly 500 mineral eyeshadows that I've been considering pressing for quite a while, but I just haven't found time to experiment with any binding agents! I'm so glad I found you! I found a great site that has 40 well palettes (15.5 mm size, tiny, but practical for the number of shadows I need to press), so that will be really convenient! 16 palettes take up a lot less storage space than 500 eyeshadow jars!! Thanks again, you're a life saver!

  • hey Cait - wow! 40-well,thats a great find! and yeah 15.5mm should be ok for mineralized pressed. OMG 500 eyeshadows??? wow!

  • *****~~~SO i found a product called neutrogena Oil free acne stress control 3-in 1 hydrating treatment. Some ingredients that were listed were dimethicone and some fruit extracts, and butylene glycol. If i water it down, can i use it as a binder??****~~~

  • hey dancer- you can definitely experiment with it.

  • can i press lipstick or lipgloss into a container?

  • hey Kay - you can waltch my Melting Lipstick video. That will help you transfer lipsticks to containers. Lipgloss tend to be runny so you will have to use a container that has a lid for that. You can pan it by melting a little clear lip balm, mixing it with it so that its hardens a little on a pan. Its tricky but achievable.

  • in the spray bottle

what formula do you have inside

i know you have the face and body mixing medium!

but does that also include water?

if so ..what are the proportions of each?

  • hey heshiun - yes water and F&B Mixing Medium. Its in the Preparing to Press Minerals video.

  • hey enkore have you tried the BareMinerals products??

  • hi. after the pressed mineral is "done" will it be easy to get on a brush or will it be a bit hard and difficult to swatch?

  • its pretty easy to swatch.

  • hi koren, does this work also if your mac regular eyeshadows break because two of mine i guess broke up through traveling and i lloveee the two colors and dont wnt to lose them!

  • hey rachie - I have a video on pressing regular eyeshadows. This one is for mineralized or finely milled powders.

  • alright thanks! ill check it out!!

  • ps im currently doing your MS word tutorial for the pallets i just depotted most of my eye shadows because i bought 4 mac palettes when iw as at the store today! thank you so much! i love being organized!

  • hey koren, great video.just wondering whether the foundation you used was from beautyfromtheearth?the 30 ml containers?

  • hey liyans - yes it is!

  • Great info for us diy-ers. I have visions of mini MSFs in my head now. Also, are you Filipino. When you talk you remind me of my mom and her sisters.

  • Hey Koren! Great video as always.

I just have one question. I put in my order through CoastalScents to check out some of their brushes and couldn't resist their beautifully coloured pigments and mica powders (which I have never used.) Would this be the ideal way to press those? The mica powder specifically since I've never used them/seen them used before and I'm completely clueless. Thanks!

  • hi Jess -yeah this would be the procedure for those. Most Mineralized makeup is mainly Mica based. And you will find that its finely milled much like powdered sugar.

  • i love it

i'll defenetly do this at home but what is in the liquid you spray on it????

  • i love it

i'll defenetly do this at home but what is in the liquid you spray on it????

  • its mixing medium - watch the Materials and Preparing to press Minerals video for the mixture.
