My overall goal is to have a good, healthy relationship to my horse and since every horse is different I think there is no single method that works for every horse.

But making a horse walk backwards with you, going sideways and turning in circles without a lead rope...mate, this is advanced. @trisheeloveslucas well I think a good way to train is to first practice that with a halter on the horse and a lead rope. you then touch his chest, say "back up" und move backwards yourself. If the horse moves a bit backwards, it gets rewarded. And then it is all about repetition.

@rowankerr69 Hi, well, I 've spent a lot of time with my horse observing his movements and establishing some basic communication. When i pointed my hand to his bum I wanted him to shift his bum etc. I taught him all things one by one and now I can put them all together. I am not a professional, it was all about love, patiecen, try and error and carrots! :-) good luck! When you have questions to specific commands feel free to ask.

@TheCavaliaHorse Thank you :-) well, good question. I taught him first to follow me and then to move away certain body parts when I look at them. E.g. I look at his bum and he moves them away. It is hard to explain, I think the trick is to spend a lot of time with a horse and just know when he does what and establish a good communication. If you have any questions to a single trick, I am happy to explain

@Katpink17 Hi, difficult to explain...A horse is a flight animal and used to move away from pressure. Pressure means moving away from something that comes towards them or even touches them - but also a look is pressure. So when you and your horse have a finetuned communication, you look at a certain body part such as his bum and he should move it away. You can also train that in a round pen using a stick to (gently) touch his bum when you are looking at it. Same with other body parts.

@Marenlene It is important though be consistent and always do the same things so the horse understands. That the horse follows me is because I am his herd and he feels safe with me. However, you can also train that with a carrot in your hand. Horses are quick learners and they like to follow, especially if they get a reward once a while. But once the horse has learnt to follow there are no carrots anymore - it should follow because it wants to.
