Persona 4: Modern day Japan, highschool kids battling in a TV to solve a murder case, the game focuses not only on leveling in combat but interacting with your friends, peers, family and co-workers to get stat boosts. When I first hear about Persona 4 I pictured Sims meets Final Fantasy.

Final Fantasy: Mythical world, basis of power is level grinding, plot usually involves stopping an evil person/creature from destroying the world.

@heckstersjr They are just natural born fighters in Final Fantasy, they are mages/thieves/warriors/paladin­s etc. That or they learn abilties through certain game mechanics. ie. Sphere Grid, Junctioning, Class System, There isn't really any one point I can think of where an FF character just gains the power to do something, except Cecil from FF4 who becomes a Paladin/Dark Knight.

If someone can explain why these games are good i will be interested, i've played some 3 and 4 and couldn't get into it, i just feel the rpg elements are way to on rails and you basically can't lose, and the story is pretty good, but someone of the heavy anime influence can get in the way, so can someone help me out with this question?

Really people. This has got to be one of the best RPGs of all time. Please buy it and play it. Don't give up on it after the first 30 minutes. Play it until the story starts to unfold and you will be hooked like a crackhead.

P4 was good but it didn't really live up to the whole "serial murder mystery" theme. I mean, most of the time, I felt I was running through some kind of kids carnival. The battle music just didn't fit at all either. I guess I liked persona 3 better.

@Bobbynibbles In persona 3, the only song i didn't really like was Mass Destruction. In P4 the music fits the scenery, but not the general theme that was created at the beginning of the game. I wouldn't expect, when investigating why the dead body of a girl was hanging from the power lines, to end up fighting monsters with some happy cheery music playing in the background (especially if you're up against the reaper) To me it just doesn't fit, though we all have our opinions.

@EctInc First I apologize, looking back I see that was an incredibly vague comment. What I meant to imply was that Persona 3 had some very boring features, the most prominent being the dungeons and, in comparison to Persona 4, lack of social events, which I find to be one of the most enjoyable aspects of the game. Also, the grind and difficulty was much greater in Persona 3 than it was in Persona 4, Overall I meant the average casual player would probably enjoy 4 much more than 3.

i loved the epicness of P3 and the story was good in bits but it seemed to drag a bit in some places when waiting for the next full moon, the final boss fight was much better than P4 partly due to the awesome bg music but overall i think that P4 was better due to the characters and complicated story

I really love the story of Persona 4, the characters and everything else, but I don't play it anymore, i haven't even finished it, the grinding problem, in which you need to grind before every boss so you could defeat it, really pisses me off :)

if you're playing on normal, clear every floor before proceeding to the next, then if you did that for every floor before the boss, you should be ready and shouldn't need to grind, if you're still underleveled then you can just train vs enemies on the floor RIGHT before the boss, for about half an hour. Hard mode allows you to use your already transfered personas so shouldn't be so bad. The game is about tactics , not about overpowering the enemy. Block your weaknesses and attack theirs.

Yeah it's not really about tactics, when you get 1 hitted off, and I usually clear every enemy on every floor.

If you just have good tactics involving weaknesses and stat ups and stat downs, then you don't need to grind or overpower the enemy, you could easily do it at 5 levels lower than what you're should be at that point

I'm not sure how but 1st play through i was underleveled, and don't think i had that good tacits. When i saved naoto i was lvl 43 and she was lvl 55, big difference right?

Most of the characters in Persona3 are much more intricately represented than those in P4.

Notice I said most.

Yosuke, for example. EASILY replaced by Junpei. I'd replace him anyday. Yukiko has -NOTHING- on Mitsuru. Soji himself doesn't look nearly as cool as Minato.

And compare Izanagi to Orpheus. No comparison.

The best characters in P4 are Chie and Kanji. Yukiko's laughter problem is cute, and androgynous Naoto wins. Kuma is annoying in every sense. But still......P3

But trust me. After two playthroughs, Kuma is gonna sound way too annoying for a videogame character. I rather have Koromaru on my team, barking and snarling, than the damn puns like: "BEAR-SONA!"

And his voice gets on my nerves all the time.

As for Yosuke/Junpei, when it comes to cool, Yosuke looks the coolest, and wields the coolest weapons, but when it goes down to it, Yosuke's a regular kid. Junpei's punch lines and overall overreacting are just Win.

I simply LOVE this game! I actually prefer this than Persona 3 because I think the music is better and like all SMT games, this one actually has a feel of mystery to it and we actually do some thinking/detective work whereas P3 was kindda spoon-fed to us. Plus, I think the chars had a more 'youthful' feel to them than the chars in P3. Overall, its a good RPG and I'd definately recommend this.

actually P3 is not the oldest one, Revelations:Persona back in 1996 part from the series shin megami tensei. then came Persona 2 innocent sin and eternal punishment (the last one was the only one released in USA in 2000, i think)then Persona 3. Actually atlus released again this past October persona 2 Eternal punishment for sale in amazon
