thistle is such an ugly flower, i figured it was chosen as a nation plant of scotland because it its healing properties for livers exposed to too much alcohol.
@Luso515PorTuoGraal i've been seeing lots of documentarys in the late years, and this one is superb! unfortunetly, Portugal doesnt have people to do this quality stuff, cuz we got the history, as you surely know ;) abraço de abrantes
Neil Oliver is the heart of this series. He delivers the story with passion, humor and a touch of pride.
We start the adventure with Episode 1,not sure if we want to invest our time watching another dry history show about politics and violence. As we progress through the trip we witness tragedy, love, pain, betrayal, devotion, unity and the blossoming of a young nation.
He walks with us through towns and castles. To cliffs and lochs.Into battles and through time and space.By the end Mr.Oliver has taken us on an unforgetable journey to meet the land and it's heart beat - the people. We have witnessed the indepenedant spirit, faith and courage of those that invested everything into the beauty and glory that is Scotland.
@IsabelTopTenClub21 - Apparently there was a lot of controversy about Neil Oliver fronting this series because he's not a historian. I think the right choice was made. And I agree, the music is great!
@jamgilp I agree who cares if he is an historian or not. This is a t.v programme and not a university lecture. It's important to have someone with some personality.
The poem sounds like a rap battle.

This is what keeps popping upon my screen whenever I key into this site. The same applies to the other parts of the series, too.

Is it just me or were the Kings of Scotland and England rather uninventive with their names. Endless processions of Edwards and Jameses.

Being a Scot, I just love this series, and the music by Paul Leonard-Morgan is absolutely
fantastic. Neil Oliver as the Narrator, is the right choice for this series, he commentates with such
passion - I feel as tho I am living every moment with him.

@jamgilp I thoroughly concur. And is there a way of getting the music on it's own in a CD or the like?

He has an MA in Archaeology, so he's not exactly unqualified. Perhaps the fact that he became a journalist after graduating ruffled some feathers?

@jamgilp Who cares? He's an archaeologist, so obviously knows his history.

Not sure, I only know my MacDonald side back to great grand father and our family had been living in Glasgow since his generation at least.
BonnieBlueFlag1314 2 years ago
Perhaps your family was victim of the Highland Clearance.
thestrongtiger82 2 years ago 4
Possibly, given I have ancestry from a couple of highland clans it would seem highly likely at least one of them were driven off their land.
50% of Scotlands population used to live in the highlands, now I think 80-90% live in the central belt.
