  • One of the best interpretations I've heard, for me even better than the Horowitz one, but then some of you will dispute that, and I agree the Horowitz is insanely good to. I urge everyone to listen to that too.

  • One of the best. The pace is a bit leisurely.

  • Why is the microphone there? He hits the piano so hard, he doesn't need it

  • @WECantThink the microphone is there for recording, I guess

  • by the end of the video his hair looks very sad

  • love it ................gilels is my favourite

  • Mother of God....

  • @DattJazz0fficial69 Yessss....? I agree though. Gilels is certainly under-rated, and at his best, such as here, he was simply awesome!!

  • This guy does my favorite version of this on you tube.

  • He fingered a girl once.

    She died

  • I once tried to play this for a hot date. The incessant duh-duh DUH drove her crazy. She didn't even give me a chance to get to the romantic middle section before hooking up with a biker who was walking by. Momma said there'd be days like this. I should have played it safe with the church choir accompanist---even if she WAS 65!

  • Hoooly jesus, what a beast he is!

  • To bad about the very slight mistakes. But what can you expect from a piece as demeaning as this one, there is no perfect recording of it on YouTube.

  • isnt his name spelled Rachmaninoff?

  • @Envyazn I heard it both ways, still don't know for sure

  • @LordHastaGaming im pretty sure its rachmaninoff, lol whatevs

  • @Envyazn I don't think it even matters since he was Russian and the last letter in his name written in Russian literally translates to V

  • @Envyazn @LordHastaGaming Well, in reality, his last name is spelled - Рахманинов. Rachmaninoff, Rachmaninov are a just different ways to do transliteration to convey Cyrillic spelling.

  • he's a beast.

  • This version is significantly slower during the main theme than other performances, including other Gilels recordings. I don't know why he chose to interpret the piece the way he did here, but god bless him for it because this is my favorite recording of it hands down, even above Ashkenazy.

  • Lord, flying spaghetti monster, SOMEONE, give me the strength to play this piece.

  • @gelatintinman it's not that hard

  • Well i am 13 and a have played c sharp minor prelude and it was hard but a won 12 international festivals with that and many other pieces including Chopin "Fantasie" Impromptu, Op. 66 . and many other very hard pieces. I am currently learning this magnificent piece g minor prelude at 14 !you have to get this amazing piece so perfect I have an amazing piano teacher who taught many famous pianists eg Stephen Hough,, Leon McCawley, Sophie Yates, James May. and many more. so there har!!!

  • Actually, mano...No, I don't think its pointless to cast an opinion. While I understand mistakes happen, I think its an injustice to all the other fantastic classical pianists who play this perfectly. Try Van Cliburn or Gary Graffman on this one...simply astounding.

  • Rachmaninov in bad-ass g minor played in maniacal style -nice!

  • i lol'd when i read the description.

  • MUSE!! they used this song in "Butterflies & Hurricanes"

  • @jaypens92

No, they didn't. I know that song. This isn't even referenced in it.

  • @colourfulwithaU are you kidding me? go to 1:30 in this song...Bellamy plays that first motif practically verbatim in his solo

  • Comment removed

  • @colourfulwithaU actually it's not verbatim but he uses that same motif and puts his own twist on it

  • Comment removed

  • @jaypens92

The piano solo is only similar to the G minor prelude (at least the middle section) in that they're both using the phrygian dominant mode on D and a whole lot of arpeggios. I see no other similarities.

  • @jaypens92

Going from the 3rd to the 5th of a chord with a passing tone in between (the motif I think you're referring to) is too common to be considered an imitation, or a quote.

  • wow. he's such a badass. from 1:00 "give me my money bitch!"

  • LOL! Everyone touting thier own when learning this peice. If you play this alittle slower it isn't that entirely difficult. I was a young teenager when I learned this (probably 14 or 15) but I wasn't the only one that age learning this peice. To play it accurately and in proper tempo takes some practice. Took me almost a year to be able to play this without hitting a single wrong note and building up speed. Sadly, this performer was all over the piano with random notes left and right :(

  • An awe inspiring performance, such sonority and richness, a true master of the russian piano school. Well, back to practising!!!

  • What a wonderfully sober interpretation! The only that irks me is a strange out-of-tuneness in the piano's mid range, noticable in the bridge...

  • and it is very hard

  • @tylerspiro Lol you suck, im 11 and I have been playing this song for a year. Seriously who gives a flying f*ck regarding how old you are?

  • @awsomedude55100

obviously you care about the age. and the faber and faber version of this piece doesn't count as playing...

  • @awsomedude55100 Bullcrap.

  • Im 12 and im learning this

  • @tylerspiro im 4 and i like hot dogs

  • i feel scary when hear this prelude

  • When I was learning the C# minor I thought that was hard.

Then I tried this. Dear god.

  • @cephalapodia the Prelude in C# Minor would have to be one of my favourite piano solos. I feel very intimidated by this piece, especially since a boy in my music class is playing this for his performance in school and I'm merely playing Beethoven's Adagio Cantabile!

  • @SweeetPea95 To be honest, the adagio cantabile (assuming you mean from Sonata No. 8) is one of my favorite pieces to play, it's so beautiful even if it's not necessarily as challenging as a Rachmaninoff.

  • @cephalapodia I couldn't agree more. It is a very beautiful piece, it makes me feel quite emotional when I play it.

  • @SweeetPea95 you can play this. im 14 im just starting and its hard.

  • @paulmcc11 Starting the Rachmaninoff or the Beethoven Adagio Cantabile? Either way your age does not get your brownie points, just saying.

  • @cephalapodia yeah, c# minor is actually easy how old are you? I'm 15 andy can do it just fine

  • @paulmcc11 15.

  • @cephalapodia really? I've tried both and I still think the C# minor is a lot harder than this.

  • @cephalapodia exactly my words

  • is this a slightly slow version? I could swear I've heard this song before but this seems a tiny bit slower.

  • That piano owes him its life! And then some!

  • wow

  • trying to play this song, it's so hard to play this so clean...

  • @ThunderDonkey yeah same here. it is incredible how he does it

  • ....wow...

  • LOL 2:12 this old woman at the front of the left audience fell asleep.

  • PERFECT! :DDDDDDDD

  • Oh how I cringe... I'm trying to learn this piece

  • @UnScriptedFlix

    Lol :) keep going

  • My favourite interpretation of this masterpiece ! Bravissimo !

  • Gilels is like the Chuck Norris of piano.

  • God, could Gilels play this piece more epically?

  • After listening to Gilels give an absolutely masterful performance, it is painful to watch Lang Lang butcher this piece. We are fortunately to have videos of great pianists from a prior generation such as Gilels and Kempff.

  • Amazing. He plays it so beautifully, with so much expression.

  • Amazing performance! The video does not match up with the audio... Very frustrating for a pianist to watch. But, simply amazing!

  • Only the people on this video would be intelligent enough to read the description. No on else does that.

  • lol his hair :))))

  • Absolutely fantastic.

  • Best version on youtube

  • i think this is how Rachmaninov himself would have played it

  • 2:32 through 3:55 = BAMMM!

  • That guy is so awesome! This piece is great and exudes so much passion, great video.

  • I know what if feels like to be able to hear beautiful music. But to actually know that you can play beautiful music, that must be the greatest joy of life

  • This piece of music is like 'Fuck you.. I'm a piano. so what?'

  • @GreatUnwashedMass I left this three weeks ago? I don't remember that. SleepYoutubing again...

  • ahhaahaha he's half hopping on the chair...

  • He attacks the piano like it made fun of his hair!

    Phenomenal btw.

  • The best performance of Prelude. the Tempo is perfect! not fast as all others running it.

  • 7 People Owe Gilels Money

  • @sttevenash

    7 Pianos you mean

  • @AsturiasGuitar No not piano's... read the description of this video

  • @sttevenash No he's right. The piano owes him money, not people.

  • classical(technically romantic/ possibly 20th century) music isn't supposed to have such attitude

  • 7 people are jelous because they will never be as good as Emil Gliels.

  • It's been 10 times in a row already I'm listening to this piece. Amazing.

  • Jeeeeez! Listen To That Piano Roarrrr! 1:03

  • @PlumBinky I love the roaring sound of grand piano's :) too bad I don't own one..

  • amazing

  • Who the fuck disliked this?

  • @evan1005 Bach.

  • @evan1005 or rather, Bach Invention worshippers. :)

  • Muy bueno

  • How does this video have seven dislikes?

  • Thumbs up if you feel a lot of energy when playing rachmaninov!

  • No disrespect but, anyone else notice the Trump hair?

  • Comment removed

  • Gilels is the epitome of artistic, yet virtuosic playing :)

  • i like how he sneaks up on the piano at 2:32

  • One day, I'll play like you =]

  • My favourite interpretation is still by Nikolai Lugansky...

Not to say this isn't fantastic though :)

  • Dear Mastro Gilels,

How can you be soo AMAZING?? There is sooo much precision in your playing, I'm feeling that even if I practice 24 hours a day, I won't be able to bring out what you're able to do.

You are really making the piano speak..

    I love you.

  • @MySuperstar09 Dude. He's dead. Lol :D

  • i hate the end of this song so much, but apperently its suppost to be like an army was someplace and now the're leaving. over all great piece though and a great perfomance/ interpritaion! bravo!

  • @koopatrol1 I believe it's a PIECE OF MUSIC not a "song". Learn some music theory please. :)

  • @Hodgeinator55 okay, scratch that. not only is it a wonderful piece of music, it's end is also decent now that ive heard it a bunch of times. and i do take music theory.

  • "This guy is like the Chuck Norris of piano"

  • HOLY COW!! I love this dude's interpretations!!! Perfect 120 bpm alla marcia tempo! I love this piece, and Gilels has made a good impression! Bravo!

  • The measure of one's skill with Rachmaninoff: How messed up your hair is by the end of the performance. Obviously, Gilels demonstrates mastery of the form.

  • This is my favorite Rachmaninoff's preludes

  • Doesn't this just exude a swashbuckling aura? I feel like a pirate when I listen to this...

  • Did anyone else feel scared just watching him from the safety of your own home?

  • azsxcdfvghjikloswdfikl;psxfrlosdegtvbhynjuiko

sorry, i was wiping the jizz off the keyboard.

  • @spesalfred awesome...awesome...AWESOME AWESOME AWESOME AWESOME!!

  • 0:59 - 1:02 "WHERE'S MY MONEY BITCH!?"

  • Matt Bellamy is not so far...

  • @danycinkhope bellamy should invest his time in this

  • I didn't know Peter Pettigrew played piano. lol

  • @bobmcfed223 lol win

  • varfordogjesus- you know this was in soviet russia? he had to be stiff or he would have been sent to the gulag

  • The six people who clicked 'dislike' probably owe him money too

  • @KingJulienDavid The really weird thing is that everytime someone sais that it ends up being a few more by the time anyone reads it.

  • Unbelievable.....

  • Horowitz plays it better but Gilel is close. A little to stiff in my opinion. Should be more floating.

  • i don't know what's better; the brilliance of the piece, or gilels's hair flips.

  • no disrespect to anyone, but emos should so play this!! with their hair, it would be even better than gilels' hair

  • the best interpretation ive heard, and he plays it so well, despite having a few wrong notes in the beginning

  • 2:36 is it just me or is his quiff censored out for being too outrageous?

  • @dom0s The piano lid is casting its shadow on his head. The same thing happened in the recording of his performance of Rach's C# prelude, same concert

  • @DylHsu My favourite version of the C# one is a recording from the piano roll made by Rach. It's not the best quality and doesn't have as much feeling of oomph as a live recording but it is definately the best played, but thats not surprising seeing as he wrote it ;P.

  • @dom0s I personally don't think a piano roll could be considered the best recording. Humans play music with emotion. Also, Rachmaninoff said that music was always open to the interpretation of the player; so anybody can play it. The preference comes down to the "translation" of the player; a piano roll is not a player. Do you understand what I'm trying to convey? I am hoping to politely show you the power of people, I guess.

  • The piano agreed to give him his money.

  • Thumbs up if you agree that his hair makes the video 10 times better.

  • The president has been kidnapped by ninjas. Are you a bad enough dude to rescue him? Ok wow i take it back. Had to listen to this twice. this performance is outstanding.

  • The president has been kidnapped by ninjas. Are you a bad enough dude to rescue him?

Didn't rly care for this version very much. Felt slow and not very dynamic in comparison to alot of other versions ive heard. I'm not by any means knocking the performer, maybe the performance itself. Still very good tho. Next up: Kissin playing it. Prolly one of my fav rachmaninoff performers.

  • This is literally the best performance of this that I have ever seen. He has such charisma that I dont even care that he plays a few fist fulls.

  • for some reason while playing this I can't hit those repeating chords at the beginning and it annoys me.

  • @UnScriptedFlix I've actually been experiencing the same problem, and it's pretty exhausting to practise this. It gets better though, very slowly, but you will see some results if you continue practising.

In my opinion this is the best version of this piece here on Youtube.

  • I'm so growing a frindge like his, then playing this.

  • The way his hair flips around is intense...

  • Man! He is awesome.

When he bows for the second time it looked like a bit weird and lofty but at the same time very stylish and noble.

  • My 13 year-old son, having just mastered Debussy's Clair de Lune, will next attempt this piece--it's perfect for a testosterone-filled boy with long, straight hair. :-)

  • I just learned this piece. I have mastered my own style of playing it. Im trying to mimic Gilels's style. It ain't easy though!

  • Gilels attacks the piano like it was made by imperialists! :-)

  • love Gilels <3

  • i didn't realise meatloaf was classically trained.

  • ich spiels auch grad.

    is voll cool!!!

    aber er...er kanns!

PS: Daumen hoch für die perfekt passende Frisur

  • He's bomber, man.

  • I love his style of playing. I like this version better than the horowitz, askenazy and richter ones.

  • best version in my opinion

  • I Obey

  • best video description ever

  • I am 15 and I hope I can some day play this prelude :\

  • woow .. im 13 and I don't believe I can play this ... well have a lot of work to do ....

  • I like it so much.. : ) i am 14 years old and i am playing this prelude... its very difficult and beautiful.. : )) (inlove)

  • @music9375 I'm 13... beat that. :D

  • @TheDittyBags

Work hard brah. Playing this piece is one thing, but playing it with the proper intensity and feel is what makes this prelude so damn amazing. I've seen a bunch of videos of kids playing complicated pieces, but a lot of the time they don't have all the non-written elements of the pieces in their playing.

So yeah, work hard at it, and listen try to listen to yourself play.

  • Comment removed

  • @TheDittyBags  i exercise with my teacher 1 hour twice a week , and i play it : p so.. ::D beat that baby :D:D:D

  • my favorite. thank you

  • I hate it when the sync's not right. Gilels is amazing though.

  • Best version ever! The prefered Rach's sun :]

  • Wow, it almost blew his hair off! That's how powerful this was! (,^^)-b

  • This is my favorite Rachmaninoff piece. It transcends beauty and power, and emerges into the realm of badass and tear-jerking manliness. Also, to play it with that agility and dynamics requires balls of steel. Gilels is a bad enough dude.

  • @PanzerRatten totally :)

  • @PanzerRatten Yeah, I'm not sexist, but I won't listen to the Valentina Lisitsa version of this, because I think you just need to have a certain amount of testosterone in order to play this piece.

  • @ShmeagolDwarf valentina lisitsa cant play this piece for shit, she misses notes all over the place and uses way too much rubato in the aggressive sections

  • This is fantastic! I really enjoy playing this piece and I have uploaded my interpretation of this work. Please feel free to listen and comment!

  • i like this, i play it....

  • I have yet to hear anyone play this better then Gilels plays it in this performance.
