If I remember correctly, this was a benefit performance in the story and someone had paid for this aria. Caruso is already upset because he is suffering some personal tragedy. I'm not sure but someone was supposed to be in the audience in a private box. His mother or lover, I'm not sure. But they weren't there so he is heartbroken.
This song makes me feel something that no other song has achieved. It just tears into my soul. And Lanza sings it perfectly, I think. His combination of vocals and facial expressions really convey the emotions in the song. I don't know why this song touches me the way it does- it's just perfect.
Recitar!
Recite! Though taken by delirium -- I don't know what I'm saying and what I'm doing! But still, you have to...get a grip! Bah! What, you think you're a man? You are a Clown! Put on your costume And powder your face. The people paid and want to laugh. And if Harlequin steals away your Colombina, Laugh, Clown! And everyone will clap! Joke about your distress and your tears, And grin at your grief and pain, oh! Laugh, Clown, Over your shattered love! Laugh at the pain that poisons your soul!
The quality of Lanza's voice is breath taking: powerful, emotional, with marvelous color and phrasing. It's a shame he only appeared in live opera twice in his career, but he was almost pathologically insecure and probably worried about making a mistake in the long performance. But what a voice: when he digs into "Ridi Pagliaccio" he is just mesmerizing. I'm still a believer that Caruso's version is the definitive, but this is way up there.
He is just amazing to me! I know he is not as polished as he would have been had he gone the Opera route rather than the Hollywood route; but he still has the most amazing voice and his high notes are unequaled.
thank you for putting up this video<3 such an amazing moment.

@jd1906sf His live recordings of this especially the 1950 and 1951 versions are even more powerful.

yeah this (Lanza: Vesti La Giubba)and Nessun Dorma ( Pavarotti's version) would have to be the greatest ever opera performances!
