Its about the measurements of the bottom. You see the inside curved is always smaller than the outside curve. So when the two plates are placed upon each other, you are comparing the outside vs inside curve, thus giving the result that the plate below is bigger, which is not.
you are only comparing outsider curve (outside is bigger) and inside curve (inside is smaller)
the answer is that the top one is acualy placed a little bit bihind the bottom one. if you notice the left side of the bottom one you'll see that it's tilted and the side of the top folows that tilt that's why it seems smaller... so it's the way you hold them that makes the illusion
the explanation is very simple, when you look at the two aches, your eyes automatically measure them but what they are measuring is the the bottom side of the top arch and the top side of the bottom arch, your mind takes a long time to adjust to seeing objects like that
@Geaxuce wrong. the answer is that the top one is acualy placed a little bit bihind the bottom one. if you notice the left side of the bottom one you'll see that it's tilted and the side of the top folows that tilt that's why it seems smaller...
"In his never ending search for fun things to do at the grocery store Steve Spangler has a science illusion that is guaranteed to fool some unsuspecting person in the produce department."
And this is what he came up with? What a sad, strange existence.
It's not an illusion, really. The reason the top one looks smaller is because he's holding it off-key; it looks like it's all aligned perfectly because the sides line up, but when you look at the reference points he's not holding them perfectly vertical. If you look at, say, the bottom-left corner of the piece, where the arc starts to carry along the bottom of the figure, he's not holding them both at the same level.
Its not an optical illusion. he isn't even positioning them correctly in the first place, an untrained eye will not spot the fact that he flushes the top("shorter") one all the way to the left, way past the beginning point of the bottom("longer") one.
they are both the same sides but he puts the yellow or red one at different posittions he pulls the red one farther back then the yellow one or the other way around
its cuz hes holding the left bottom edge of the top one to the left top edge of the bottom one. if that makes any sense. if he places teh two right on top of each other, they wouldnt look soo different
to me its not a allusion because when he put put 1 arc on the of the other 1 it wasn't in the middle

@TheHijackreaper
its because there are two arcs on one cardboard and the sides are cut horizontally making them different sizes
u compare <1 with <3 and it will be the same size
but <1 is not equal to <2
has nothing to do with the way hes holding them
