Matakitas was a satanist who murdered Sylvia to please his master....for Sylvia to "come back to life", the deal with Satan is that she initiates a plan to amuse him. If suitably amused, she will find herself alive in the present courtesy of her master. Matakitas kills Judy, who subsequently takes Sylvia's place in Hell.........Sylvia replaces Judy in 1968 having won her right to "live" by amusing Satan. Hence we see Sylvia in the very last scene all happy again working in the library!!
