Stalin's ethnic policies wanted not to deport but rather to resettle those nomadic peoples to their homeland, i.e. to send the Kalmyks back to the East, the Turkish populations to the Turkish border, etc.

My grandfathers were veterans of World War II. And they were kalmyks and actually great and brave warriors. While they both were at war, their families had to suffer from cold and some of the family members died of starvation and deseases in Siberia. Stalin's ethnic policies wanted not to deport but rather to resettle those nomadic peoples to their homeland, i.e. to send the Kalmyks back to the East, the Turkish populations to the Turkish border, etc.

Keen observation...Now to think of it, you are totally right..Stalin wanted to keep his power, and just to make sure he is keeping it - he has killed millions, but his goal was not an extermination . Hitler did pursue the extermination itself. Yeah, "ends" and "means" - explains well.

and u right about the start of the war..I have read the summary of one Brit Historian - he has concluded that Soviet had better weapons , except planes, more of everything than Germans .Even the tank warfare was first thought by a Soviet Comander Tuhachevsky - who was excuted by Stalin in 1937..Guderian picked up a lot of points for that fellow , when he was in Russia in early 30s

Actually by the treaty of 1939 , Russians were allowed to inspect German weaponry. And yes, I do realize and my heart goes out to the Russian people for what they had to endure under the German occupation. However, two wrongs don't make a right. I am sure you know that. If a criminal comes into your house and murders (or not - not all Russians were killed) your family, how does that give you an immunity from your own criminal acts?

@DaGodfatha22...having two fronts saved the west and russia. D-Day in normandy was planned to get hitler to divide his armies thereby weakening them for a soviet counterattack in the east. The russian winter played a huge part. Enter the US industrial machine in 1944 and it was just a matter of time.......the commonweath countries fought them to a standstill until the yanks joined but it was a combination of many factors that won the war. Russia would not have won without the allies.

Not completely justified but you do have a good point, those soldiers were outraged about all the horrors they had seen in Russia. What the Germans did to the Slavic lands was far far far more horrible, and it wasn't based on anything mroe than a lie about how subhuman those people were. The crimes of the Red Army were at least about something real. And the Wehrmacht committed mass raped too.

You seem to know alot about this issue. I think you've given a plausible reason why Russian soldiers committed mass rape and other crimes late in the war in Germany.
However, what was it that drove the Russian soldiers to commit massive atrocities amongst innocent civilians in eastern europe earlier in the war when they were allied with the Nazis? What is your explanation for their looting, murder, rape, etc., against nationalities that had done NOTHING to them and were of no threat???
