I had this volume disappearing act periodically. Usually, it comes back after reboot. However, recently it didn't. Why does a billion dollar company make such products. Anyway, after following your steps it worked, the icon is back. Thanks for the video.
Dude, you are awesome!!!!!! I added a vidoe card (with HDMI) and had to muck with the BIOS and enabling/diabling sound devices etc. I finally got a realtek icon t omanage my sound and ports but everything else disappeared from the tray!!
@JSTUPRODUCTIONS Acturally what u r looking for is in the “Taskbar”tab go to “Taskbar”tab-Notification area-Customize.. then u get a new window,at the bottom of which youll see "Turn system icons or off" Click that, U get what u want
I spend 120 fucking dollars on windows shit 7 to have my speakers be disabled for a moment so i can turn my FUCKING headphones on... low and behold I have to jump through 20 fucking hoops to fucking get my fucking sound to work. FUCK YOU BILL GATES YOU WHORE!!!!!
Great tutorial. sevenforums under "tutorials" has a bat program that makes it easier, but the system here doesn't allow a direct link. Some comments there rec'd clearing "Tray Notification Cache" under Advanced in CCleaner. I got my volume control back with "Ultimate Windows Tweaker," under "Personalization" and "Task Bar Appearance." I "removed" Volume Control, then reversed my action to get it back. I had to log off, and back on, but it worked. Had to make task icons small again
You are genius... I had the same problem and it is solved after watching this tutorial.....
I would like to mention that before watching this tutorial I had tried to change all the possible settings..... but they didn't work. Finally this tutorial helped me out... Thanks
i have had so man damn problems with dell...at least they are minor but just the little things that piss you off, you know? its terrible, only thing that keeps me coming back is the affordable prices...
thaaaaaannnnnnnnnnnnnnn you,a million a zillion , this icon disappearing acts was driving me nuts, you are a life saver oh PS. you should be a teacher by the way,
Good tutorial. Thanks. Would you consider linking to a webpage explaining why this works? I hate following instructions without actually knowing what it is I'm doing. That said, your tutorial worked so I suppose I don't actually need to know!
Thank you so much for his tutorial. Vista drives me nuts with my Speaker Icon disappearing randomly. I Googled and found a post on Vista forums that didn't fix the problem but this tutorial worked first time. Great tutorial, informative, concise and easy to follow. Many thanks once again.
Worked fine ...but just to tell, when I closed explorer.exe, and you said to open it back, i didn't had a white "box", (new task), it opened "cmd"? anyway, I almost died but it worked anyway :) thanks a lot, got a few pc to repair now! haha
I just did what you recommended and it worked like a charm. Fantastic tuturial. I hope everyone who has this problem gets to see this video. Excellent.

it didnt work at all :/ i tried many times but.. my icons are living their own life, the are appearing and desappearing when ever they want, and i( even as the user admin) cant do something about it?! so i tried enable the admin. and logged in to that, and there i could do it?? it was no problem, but on my user admin, it still doesnt work:/
dunno if you can help, but when I go to the last folder in the Registry Editor (TrayNotify), I have 6 different entries :S Default, IconStreams, LastAdvertisement, PastIconStreams, PromotedIconCache and UserStartTime. Do I delete all of these? :S
I admit, I was skeptical, but it worked. You're my hero. I looked around for this all day today just to find out how to get back that stupid volume icon. Can't thank you enough! I"ll buy you a house.

WORKS! But you gotta reboot your whole system after registry modification. Next, right-click on tray icon area, choose Properties, and turn the icons on back by placing the tick ;)
It totally worked! You're the man! Do you know anything about the recharger not working? First I lost my power icon altogether. When I got it back it reads the battery is there, but not charging. Is there a regedit fix for that? I had the charger and battery checked, and they're both fine.
Hi Jay, I have followed the steps, and it worked for me. I appreciate your help a lot, thanks especially for taking the time to make this video when you don't have to :)

I thought after 2 years or so I wouldn't suffer through this again.
But hold! They (Microsoft) STILL haven't fixed this!
I had to google how to fix this because it had been so long since the last time it happened I forgot about how.. then BAM! n0 saund 4 yoo!!
I like my program compatibility, but damn.. things like this make me pray for the moment they finally cut off that old, mangled, Windows XP limb.
Then again, Windows 8 scares the hell out of me.
