I had this volume disappearing act periodically. Usually, it comes back after reboot. However, recently it didn't. Why does a billion dollar company make such products. Anyway, after following your steps it worked, the icon is back. Thanks for the video.

Dude, you are awesome!!!!!! I added a vidoe card (with HDMI) and had to muck with the BIOS and enabling/diabling sound devices etc. I finally got a realtek icon t omanage my sound and ports but everything else disappeared from the tray!!

Great tutorial. sevenforums under "tutorials" has a bat program that makes it easier, but the system here doesn't allow a direct link. Some comments there rec'd clearing "Tray Notification Cache" under Advanced in CCleaner. I got my volume control back with "Ultimate Windows Tweaker," under "Personalization" and "Task Bar Appearance." I "removed" Volume Control, then reversed my action to get it back. I had to log off, and back on, but it worked. Had to make task icons small again
